A photographic image created using Van Dyke Formula on cartridge paper. Unfortunately the text isn’t as strong on the original so I had to do some colour dodging on photoshop to make it the image I had intended. Apart of me loves the process but at the same time the constantly changing factors involved in the process can make creating the perfect image very frustrating to achieve. Cartridge paper becomes very delicate after all the washes and fixes it had to go through so I ended up with two images being utterly destroyed, one unharmed and this one with the rips and crumbles which became my favorite.

Sometimes, for whatever reason, artists find their work being used without permission. Recently this happened to a collaborative work I did with Helen McLean. Let me share with you how we handled it. Randy posted this journal entry and I noticed that there was a picture of me on the invitation. “that’s odd” I thought. Not knowing how it got there, my first stop was to check with Helen, who I had collaborated with on the image to find out if she had given permission for it’s use. I also asked Randy who had posted the journal, if he knew anything. We all drew a blank but Randy very helpfully put us in touch with the organizer of the event. Before we did anything else we thought about how this might have happened. The organizer was most probably provided with the image and had no idea we owned it. In fact, even the person who supplied it may have been unaware it was covered by copyright. We also realized that had we been asked, we almost certainly would have given permission for it’s use with a credit and link. With all this in mind, we sent a polite email which presumed innocence and provided the appropriate evidence of ownership. Hello David, I’m writing to you regarding an image which appears on your site http://www.definitelysuperior.com/exhibitions.html and on your invitations. I have attached a screen shot of the site where it is shown and a copy of the invitation. This image is of me, as taken by photographer Helen McLean. We have conjoined rights to the image and neither of us remembers giving permission for it to be used in this manner. I realize you may not have known this when it was published and used on your invitations. I have attached the full sized version (with an appropriate watermark and minus any post processing) to this email to verify I own the source copy. Helen and I are happy for the image to be used if we are credited as photographer and model with a link to “http://www.redbubble.com/search/helenjocollab”. Otherwise, I am requesting that it be taken down and that the invitation be changed to remove it so that any more printed do not use this image. Thank you very much for your assistance with this, and I look forward to your reply at your earliest convenience. Jo O’Brien & Helen McLean What Happened Next? We got a lovely email back apologizing for the use of the image, explaining how it had come to appear on the site and with a promise to update the site to include a credit and link to our work. It had been an honest mistake that they were more than happy to correct. What did we learn? You don’t need to be angry and demanding to work things out People can genuinely be unaware they are infringing copyright People can actually be reasonable, rational and helpful A negative can become a positive with the right attitude Our image with a link to our other work is now out there on the internet, reaching a niche market and gaining exposure for our work.

As I awoke to this first day of 2009, I am grateful to the breath of life and the beating of my heart, in rhythm with all those I love, respect and honor. As a peacemaker making resolutions (decisions as future actions), I decided that a RE-Solution was more appropriate, under the circumstances. RE- meaning ANEW and solutions, meaning the solving of a problem. As the vibrational energy sets my heart afire with the light of PEACE, the ONE feeling, being and vibration I wish most for our planet and humanity, I contemplated just how to activate them. Calling forth images of PEACE, I chose 3 images: / This image of myself bathed in the light of peace and love; holding hands with all those I love, honor and respect; and, Nature thriving again and respected by all. I allowed myself to be anchored with the feelings that these images emanated. / I then wondered what these vibrations would smell like and the first thought that came to my mind was Sandalwood, a scent that always calms and grounds me. / My imagination swirled with a rainbow of colors to choose from, that also reminded me of this feeling I wish to emanate, and my personal choice was Indigo, the color that resonates with perception, thought and morality, as well as in-sight. / Choose a phrase, was what ‘popped up’ next in my mind’s eye … as I heard the Dalai Lama say, “When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also develop inner happiness and peace.” / Synonomous words of Peace to enhance the frequency, choose two…tolerance and non-violence came to mind. / Music always seals the deal for my soul, so choosing a song to accompany this recipe was in order, so many to choose from and low and behold from my 300 CD player, Robert Palmer begins singing It takes every kind of People – so this will be my theme song for this vibration. / What actions or behavior can I do daily that will keep this vibration or light shining, easy answers came…continue meditating and communicating with people around the world. / Writing out these details made them more concrete, visible, touchable and my training knows that if posted around my space and read upon daily (at least for the next 21 days), it will become a regular expression of the state of being that I have chosen for my Peaceful intentions. Solutions Anyone? / / Background Info and Related Links / / I Love This Perspective / / I wont post any background info… There’s plenty of pages around that have already done that. / / In my view, closing accounts, removing sales or art and boycotting the bubble wont work, great in sentiment, but not so constructive in bringing about positive change or preventing the collapse of this community and website. / / There’s been many mistakes made throughout this ordeal, not surprising when people are feeling offended, hurt, under pressure and vulnerable, and by that I mean everyone concerned. / / I don’t want this great Community and Art Website to fall like so many initiatives I’ve seen collapse before it. / / For some it’s just a business, others simply an Art Gallery, and for others it’s a Family and Home. / / I’m sure one thing we can at least all agree on is that we don’t want it to crumble and collapse. / / So how about we all take a deep breath, quit focusing on the past and the mistakes people have made along the way, and start from this point on thinking about constructive ways to preserve the future of Redbubble and amend some of the past mistakes made? Yes… Maybe I’m just a fucking Liberal… Hell… I don’t even know what the damn word means, nor do I know the difference between Left and Right Wing, Republican or Conservatism. / / I’m agnostic when it comes to religion. / / Far too sociopathic to take sides in a debate on a personal level. / / And like most of you, I’m all for justice and fairness. / / But I DO know when people are hurting and lashing out, I think we’ve ALL got to start looking at our OWN part in things, instead of the mistakes or actions that OTHER people have made… / / For christ’s sakes, we’re ALL capable of impulsive, human error. / / Focus on building and reconstructing / / Not contributing to the Fall / / No???? /
