  • All work on this site is being sold for the Phoenix appeal. / This will be for as long as is needed. / I live in Englad now but lived in Australia for ten years, / while growing up and have family out there. / They are safe. Taken from a photo this is what these guys do at the weekends. I wanted to paint this as my first painting, thank goodness I waited, I was really proud when I completed it. It is still probably the best painting I have done so far and the one I would call my masterpiece. / A poem about my work now it is hanging in the local gallery, Written by Andrew Price. I looked at the picture / Turned away / Turned back again / It sparked a memory / Long forgotten The picture was not a game / The memory was / I wracked my mind / For many a long day / So many lines reaching skyward / Is warfare a game? / I don’t think so! Reality is in the balance / Between life and death / I think I remember the game The Game. You gather your armies / Tightly on the land / You let them fall / Randomly / Who will get hurt? Now we have to work out / How to pick them up / One or maybe two at a time / Without disturbing / The others Removing them / From something that looks like / A bundle of sticks / We must pick them up / To be used again and again / To reach for the arms / For the next battle scene I think I remember the game

  • When I posted “For Mark, an American soldier, who gave his life in Iraq,” I didn’t realize that it would not print well as a card, so I’m adding this image of the same poem by Kim Graham and a different dragonfly photo to accommodate those who would like a copy of this in card size. 100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation. According to the foundation’s official website, “The Mark W. Graham Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides support for young people of character and military families in crisis. It honors the legacy of Mark Graham, a fallen soldier whose strength of character and gift of service to his country are an inspiration to all who knew him. Mark was a Lafayette, La., native and his death opened the community’s eyes to the reality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make in their fight to keep our country free. He was married to Stephanie for a little more than a year when he died. Mark was 22 years old.

  • Two soldiers from the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team stand guard in the rear hatches of their stryker vehicle while on patrol north of Mosul, Iraq. Many unfamiliar with the geography of Iraq believe it is entirely arid, but as this picture shows, northern Iraq is quite hilly and in the spring, the fields are a vibrant green because of all the precipitation coming off the northern range. Duhuk, Iraq Circa 2006

  • This is just so sad to me, that families can not even get a sense of closure and have a place to mourn the loss of their family member. Any US Veterans Cemetary is just littered with these gravemarkers for Unkown Soldiers. How can you give it all for your country, and then not even be recognized by name? HDR image captured at the Hampton National Cemetary, Hampton, VA.

  • inspired by the lone piper … and his song for the fallen soldiers – the lament: ‘flowers of the forest’ ... such a beautiful tune along with ‘highland cathedral’ ... if you don’t know these tunes then source them and listen carefully. Another song to source and listen to is ‘green fields of france’ by the fureys … magical song !!! great – ‘friend forever’ or ‘remembrance’ card

  • Union Colonel Johnson looks down to the Valley below, as his troops secure the perimeter for the ensuing night. The last days’ battles resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Col. Johnson settles down at his field desk to write the following report: / / “Headquarters Couch’s Division,”Williamsburg, Va., May 8, 1862. “Sir, I have the honor to report that at 1 o’clock P.M., of May 5, the head of my Division, consisting of Peck’s Brigade only, arrived on the ground in rear of the center of our line of battle, and was by direction of General Keyes, posted by me supporting him, he being fiercely engaged. Peck soon moved forward, and for an hour and a half was opposed by nearly the whole of the enemy’s disposable force in front, covered the assaults of their infantry and cavalry, / but the determined courage of this Fort Magruder, distant 400 to 600 yards, with its plunging fire of shells and grape gallant officer and the steadiness of his brigade foiled all attempts to drive him from the ground. “The left of the 55th New York was twice forced back, but the 93rd Pennsylvania and the 72nd New York Volunteers, coming up furiously, recovered the space lost. *There was very little faltering, and I beg to say to the General / commanding that I want no higher earthly honor than to be the Commander of the First Division of this Corp. *The list of casualties were: Peck’s Brigade, killed, 18; wounded, 81; missing, 26. Deven’s Brigade, 1 killed and 2 wounded. Artillery detachment, 1 wounded. Total loss, 19 killed, / 84 wounded and 26 missing. Image created via layering 3 images total. My art with 1000+ views

  • Another typical cold, damp and gloomy night when we geared up and boarded the waiting C-47’s for yet another combat jump, this time the dropzone is near Market Harborough. While in flight I could barely make out the boys’ faces, they all are still so young, with weary eye from the years of war they had seen. Noone looked scared, war has become such a routine anymore, it’s almost like they were all indifferent. / We greenlight popped at 02:15am, we all had a pretty uneventful jump. After a short two click hump we got to the Rhine and could see the Nijmegen Bridge still intact about 150 meters away. We quickly set up perimeter security and settled in to report enemy activities at the bridge. Finally, after a couple of hours the faint, distant rumble of tanks could be heard approaching the other side of the bridge. I hit Mike’s arm and just nodded towards the bridge. Mike had alrady raised the binoculars and after several seconds, lowered them in horror. He quietly whispered: “Looks like 5 Tiger Tanks and at least 2 companies of infantry. I think I saw one of the Tank commanders point right into our direction.” I barely muttered “Oh crap”, when an eithy-eight opened up from somewere behind the tanks. Only the seagulls know what happened next …....

  • Third United States Infantry, The “Old Guard,” one of the oldest and most respected Infantry Regiments in the United Stated. Since April 6, 1948 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weather. The sentinel marches 21 steps across the black mat, past the final resting places of the Unknown Soldiers of World War I, World War II, Korea, and the crypt of the Unknown Soldier of the Vietnam War. With a crisp turn, the sentinel turns 90 degrees to face east for 21 seconds. The sentinel then turns a sharp 90 degrees again to face north for 21 seconds. A crisp “shoulder-arms” movement places the rifle on the shoulder nearest the visitors to signify that the sentinel stands between the tomb and any threat. After the moment, the sentinel paces 21 steps north, turns and repeats the process. Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia . (American Historic Heritage) / canon 40 D /
