i’m that unknown soldier / they tried to put in the grave / i wouldn’t behave / to the ground i’ll be no slave / my spirit was rising / as the dirt hit the casket / i laughed, and looked right at it / peeped the funeral, and who was there / i knew some people didn’t care / saw my people pouring out a little liquor / for the brothers, and sisters not there / my heart told me to wipe a tear / then with a quick breeze i disappeared / saw demons, and angels talking shit / just like on earth their mouthes never quit / an old man was selling suits for judgement day / i told him i’d go as i came / turned around, and saw a world insane / this must be heaven / nothing to lose / nothing to gain / little children running with ease / not once did i hear the word please / the women so pretty i damn near cried / i knew it, but i had to try / then out of darkness the right one appeared / hold up! this is too easy i feared!!! / was this a setup, or a simple test? / for the brothers, and sisters / who have been put to rest / all of a sudden i heard laughter / a voice from above said chill son / your work here is done / time to make room for the next one / into the light i rose so slick / the next guy thought he saw a magic trick / with wings on my shoulder / i took one last glance / on my grave / it was engraved / a true unknown soldier / forever brave / smiled, and looked at his grave / to this ground he’ll be no slave

I went to the Anzac Day Parade on St Kilda Rd this morning – I found parts of it quite hard and had to stop shooting a number of times because I find Anzac Day in general to be very upsetting. My maternal grandfather was POW in Austria during WWII and it affected him greatly to the extent he never spoke to the family about it. I guess the hardest part for me was the times where only descendents were left or no-one was left to walk behind the regimental flags. So here are the photos I managed to get… LEST WE FORGET 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 /

One of my dearest friends from Zazzle (thanks Penny!) sent this to me via email the other day and I thought it was more than worth sharing. Below is the address where you can send one of the many wounded US soldiers fighting in the War on Terrorism a holiday greeting card. I know to some this small gesture may seem silly, but it really is the tiny thoughtful things like this that keep our troops going. My own baby brother, who just turned 21 this past June, has already been to Afghanistan and Iraq, seen things no man should have to see, and will be sent back over for the second time only 3 days after Christmas. My family is very fortunate to be able to spend Christmas day with him and there are so many other military families who are not that lucky. It only takes a few dollars to bring a smile to one of our own so please, this year when you are writing our your holiday greetings, please include an encouraging word for one of our boys or girls fighting for our right to be able to do the things that we do everyday. Thanks everyone! :) / Shannon / A Recovering American soldier / c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center / 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW / Washington,DC 20307-500

It's A Pittance of Time

Check out this pic I did for rememberance day! My son sang this song this year for Anzac day and it is just as relevant for rememberance Day A Pittance Of Time / Written by Terry Kelly They fought and some died for their homeland. / They fought and some died, now it’s our land. / Look at his little child; there’s no fear in her eyes. / Could he not show respect for other dads who have died? / Take two minutes, would you mind? / It’s a pittance of time, / For the boys and the girls who went over. / In peace may they rest, may we never / forget why they died. / It’s a pittance of time. / God forgive me for wanting to strike him. / Give me strength so as not to be like him. / My heart pounds in my breast, fingers pressed to my lips, / My throat wants to bawl out, my tongue barely resists. / But two minutes I will bide. / It’s a pittance of time, / For the boys and the girls who went over. / In peace may they rest. / May we never forget why they died. / It’s a pittance of time. / Read the letters and poems of the heroes at home. / They have casualties, battles, and fears of their own. / There’s a price to be paid if you go, if you stay. / Freedom’s fought for and won in numerous ways. / Take two minutes, would you mind? / It’s a pittance of time, / For the boys and the girls all over. / May we never forget, our young become vets. / At the end of the line, / It’s a pittance of time. / It takes courage to fight in your own war. / It takes courage to fight someone else’s war. / Our peacekeepers tell of their own living hell. / They bring hope to foreign lands that hate mongers can’t kill. / Take two minutes, would you mind? / It’s a pittance of time, / For the boys and the girls who go over. / In peacetime our best still don battle dress / And lay their lives on the line. / It’s a pittance of time / In peace may they rest, / Lest we forget why they died. / Take a pittance of time.

Something cool that Xerox is doing If you go to this web site, www.LetsSayThanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq . You can’t pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services. How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! This is a great site. Please send a card. It is FREE and it only takes a second. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our guys and gals over there need to know we are behind them…

The bugle call of the Last Post always makes me sad when i hear it. / It has such a haunting sound to it and just knowing what it represents makes / it all the more heartfelt. / Its like visiting the past and times of when the ANZAC soldiers first went to war. / The excitement and bustle of soldiers family and friends gathering to farewell / each other, on their unknown journeys end. / Together with the sadness of not knowing what there futures held / The symbol of the poppy makes me think of a field of soldiers /

Peace on Earth (an extract chapter from Norman's War)

The greyness of the day moved to meet the twilight and the diminishing light was barely perceptible. An exchange of one greyness for another, equally bereft of joyful sunlight. Every day the same: every twilight the same and the sameness was the grind of war. The soldiers caked in mud had been eaten alive by lice encrusted in their hair: most of them had shaved their heads in an attempt to discourage the parasites. Waterlogged rifles, many of them no longer working, lay in sodden trenches. Only a few hundred feet across No Man’s Land the enemy suffered the same gloomy days and nights. / “By God!” said Taffy Williams trying to get his rifle to cock, “I hope theirs don’t work neither. It’d be flippin’ great if they came charging at us right now.” / “What’s that over there?” said Taffy Williams poking young Tom in the ribs. The boy turned his attention to where Taffy’s finger pointed. / “It’s a Christmas tree with candles.” said Tom. / “It’s a bloody what?” / “Christmas tree!” the boy repeated. / “Look, there’s more further up!” Taffy pointed. / “Yes, I can see them.” / “I’ll be damned!” Taffy scratched his head. / “Is it a trick?” Tom asked him. / “How would I know?” said Taffy peering over the top of the trench. / In a short time the whole of A Company saw the trees and questioned the German’s intentions. / “It’s a trick?” / “Must be!” / “Maybe it’s not.” / “What if it is?” / “They’re just like us.” / “They miss home.” / “We should do it.” / “Do what?” / “Put some trees up.” / “I wish I was home now,” Tom could feel his foot going to sleep and wriggled his toes to restart circulation, then moved his position. / They heard the sound of singing and laughter on the wind: voices called out, / “Happy Christmas Englishmen!” / Taffy shouted back to the unseen voices, / “Happy Christmas to you Fritz: save some turkey for us poor buggars.” / Tom began to sing Silent Night: the men joined in: then one by one, they heard their adversaries join in, until the sound of Christmas carols filled the fields of Flanders. A voice was heard calling out in the dark, / “Come on out and see us!” / Taffy looked at Tom and shrugged his shoulders. / “What the hell – it’s Christmas Eve.” Taffy stood up and walked into no-man’s land. / “Taffy come back,” his mates shouted to him but he ignored their pleas and continued walking. A shadowy figure emerged from the German trench: walked over to Taffy and shook his hand. Then a second German climbed over the parapet and soon Taffy and the Germans were talking animatedly and sharing cigarettes. Tom urged a few of the others to join in: together they left the trenches and joined the group in no-man’s land. More and more men strolled into the darkness and soon almost everyone in A Company had congregated with the Germans. The men exchanged cigarettes and souvenirs. Photographs were shown with pride: smiling children and lonely wives stared from the paper. The little groups stayed huddled together until midnight. It was agreed, that the following day, both sides would work without hindrance to bury the dead. / Christmas morning bore witness to the extraordinary sight of English and German soldiers, working together in no-man’s land, each side sorting through the bodies for identification: then working as a team to bury their fallen comrades. / Taffy Williams and Tom Smith made friends with Heinz Gerhaut, a German giant with a shock of blonde hair who had worked in Wales before the War: they found they shared much in common including a love of music and poetry. / “My friend here, was a deeply religious man. He would have wanted a funeral and a priest,” said Heinz to Tom as he bent down to lift his comrade and carry him to a prepared grave. / Without a moment’s hesitation Tom asked Heinz to wait until he returned and ran back to the English trenches. He went from trench to trench until at last he found Father Alexander. / “Father I need your help. We need a funeral service over there.” / Father Alexander willingly obliged and before the day was over the priest had conducted eight funeral services for the grateful German army. / That night Tom sought out the priest and sitting down beside him he shared the heart of a boy changed. / “Father, I did what you said. I prayed for them. You were right, they are just like us. It’s going to be bloody difficult to keep on fighting now we’ve met them.” / “Today, Tom,’ said the priest with a tear in his eye, “God smiled down from heaven and we showed Him the better part of man.” / On the 28th December 1914 on the fields of war, in the southern part of the Ypres Salient, the bullets fired from the rifle of Heinz / Gerhaut killed Tom Smith.

The rain has settled, the wind is still. Peter is standing behind a tree two feet of his best friend’s corps fanning off flies that were lured by brain fragments and intestines. He scans the field for other soldiers and finds nothing-nothing but body parts and military equipment sporadically scattered all over the place; mutilated torso at his left his- decapitated bodies at his right. Questions and thoughts are racing, “Am I next? or the last man standing?” The sight of his friend’s exposed organs upsets his stomach. Saliva forms at the back of his throat; he gulps to stop the vomiting. Suddenly his life flashes before him. Visions of his wife and daughter impose water to fill his eyes. Tears and sweat are running down his face. He licks his lips and tastes the salt of his flesh snapping him back to reality. Suddenly he hears footsteps behind him and without delay, he turns around armed and ready to shoot…but no one’s there. He turns back around only to be confronted by the barrel of an AK47. His body and soul are paralyzed. No more thoughts. No more questions. His peripheral vision is blurred. His eyes are fixed on the bullet as it slowly approaches his brow. Before it attempts to pierce his skull, Peter jolts awake drenched in sweat. He quickly scans his face and frantically looks at his hands for reassurance of his existence. 3:00 am is on the clock. His wife’s hand gently brushes his leg. The voice of his drill sergeant replays in his head. “At ease.” He kisses his wife, takes a deep breathe and goes back to sleep.
