I loved the way this socked looked, the rust forming on itself and the way the wall was decaying around it just made it so irresistible, i had to take a shot.

A cow or sheep’s skull I found in the field next to my house.
There is nothing more satisfactory than tweaking and perfecting those dials on a great Marshall amp and getting the exact sound you are looking for. Whether it be a crisp, clean sound you are looking for or a rough metal sound that almost pierces the eardrums.

Pulled out the socket.
An electric socket for a round pin plug in a old derelict house in Listowel. Functional if nothing else.

Okay, so I’m curious, hence this shot taken in the rolling expanse of parkland we know as the Alexandra Gardens. I had just taken a frame of the giant electronic screen at the Moomba fairground in Melbourne this year when I suddenly had a thought ….. As a former sportswriter who travelled the world, covering some of the events I dreamed about as a child, I literally spent years staring at giant electronic screens. But what, I asked myself, would the BACK of the screen look like? So I walked behind this huge screen and shot this from a public-access walkway. I actually shot two frames, but I prefer this one because the progression of unsequential yellow numbers and the forest of wires and coloured sockets are actually dominated by the strong horizontal patterns, as well as the bold shadows in the midday sunlight. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F6.7, 1/350 sec, ISO 200, focal length 108mm. Sinister sockets of an industrial era…Maybe I’m just dribbling here! /
Socket is the newest addition to our little pack/team. He’s a smart little guy. We aren’t exactly sure on age because he does need some TLC before he fills out enough to be able to even tell I think. He was so skinny and had such a bad cough when we got him. The cough we thought was “kennel cough” but it went away very quickly when he started getting enough nourishment to support his entire body. Once he was fed and was no longer dehydrated he was much better. The cough had been there so long he actually uses it to communicate when he is upset. (Like when he doesn’t want to go to bed) We called animal control on the former “owers” because it became quite apparent after a few days that they let this pup starve. We were told he was three when we started communicating with these people. He’s actually only one years old we think. He was so emaciated he was like a shadow. His whole body could hide behind my calf. He’s fattened up a little bit because he’s gotten to keep his food, and eat good healthy “sled doggin’” food, and he eats like a champion racer that he was apparently intended to be. He doesn’t have a harness yet, as there is nothing that will fit him. He can walk on his hind legs like a person with some assistance and we believe his breeding is either Ridgeback or Greyhound and some other kind of hound perhaps. We were told “Husky” which up here in Alaska means any sled dog possibly, so we are not sure. Once his ribs quit showing we will be more able to tell. Here is one of Socket’s first “Baby pictures”. He’s a good boy, and tries very hard to please. Poor thing did not even know how to “play” when we got him. It took two weeks of cajoling for him to understand that he COULD play. Yesterday he fetched a toy on command…so he is learning fast from our other dogs. He got into a fight with our older one, but because our older one is the lead dog we do expect that. Socket cannot have surgery until he is healthy enough to have surgery. Our older dog is a very merciful fighter though. He does not use his teeth but rather “punches” with his front paws. The little guy didn’t stand a chance, and he did start it. (He was getting into a habit of trying to “jump” Bailey and Bailey just couldn’t hack it anymore. He let the little whippersnapper snap on his face a few times, and just walked away before this incident. Socket now submits to his “place” in the pack when Bailey walks in the room. He’s a quick study if nothing else. Bailey is pleased with his progress and has willingly worked with him now. Being they are both unfixed there will be other challenges over the next month or so but once Socket has that done I think they will work famously. I don’t judge “mushers” harshly often but the man that owned this dog had a large kennel of dogs for a “recreational” mushing team that did tourist runs. I called animal control because it makes ALL mushers, whether racing, recreational or utilitarian look bad when one abuses their dogs. It’s why the slightest infraction with your dogs can get you pulled and disqualified in any race event up here. Socket did not deserve the treatment they gave him and they acted as though he was completely normal when they dropped him off with us. The poor boy was nearing his last stages of life, and now he is thriving. He house trained quite quickly, though we do still have some issues. Of course he is a young territorial little dog so he does have a “mine” problem” yet. Thankfully he chooses things that don’t matter too much. It is so cool to see the change in the last two weeks with Socket. He is now a scrappy pup, with a bit of an attitude.
