/ Nikon D60~ 55/200 / Mexico Jan/2009 Snowy Egret / Egretta thula / Length: 22 to 26 inches Wingspan: 46 inches Seasonality: Summer / Migrant / ID Keys: Black legs with contrasting yellow feet, black bill, all white plumage The elegant snowy egret was killed by the thousands in the 1800’s for its long, lacy breeding plumage, which was used for women’s hats and other clothing. It has recovered both in range and numbers since that time. Of the white egrets found in South Dakota, the Snowy Egret can be identified by its size (smaller than the Great Egret), it’s yellow feet contrasting with black legs. See the Identification Tips page for differentiating among the white Egrets and Herons in the state. Habitat: Prefers large sloughs or marshes, sometimes edges of ponds or lakes. / Diet: Varies, but includes fish, crustaceans, insects, frogs, lizards, snakes, rodents, snails, and worms. / Behavior: Uses a variety of foraging techniques. They will often actively wade through shallow waters, chasing prey that is startled by the movement. They will also stand still in shallow water, waiting for prey to approach. Snowy Egrets will also forage on dry land, usually in search of insects. / Nesting: June and July / Breeding Map: Breeding bird survey map / Song: Generally silent / Migration: Birds in the interior of the country migrate to U.S. coastal areas, Mexico, and Central America in the fall. / Similar Species: Cattle Egret, Great Egret, immature Little Blue Heron. See Identification Tips for differentiating between these species. / Conservation Status: Expanding range to the north and increasing population in recent decades. Numbers are still far below historical levels, however.

I was inspired by the contrast and affect of soft, quieting snow to busy city life and its bold structures. This was mainly painted using a palette knife and heavily textured with impasto. Oil on Canvas 24”x20” Original Sold

I think this is the first time I was able to get as close as I was to this beautiful fellow. I was so pleased when I uploaded it onto the computer and saw the results. I do believe it is one of my better ones. My shot -Snowy Owl has been featured in the following four groups: In the Core [C.O.R.E.] Group In the Zoophoria Group In Animal photography Group And in the All That Is Nature Group Believe me this has had selective colouring on the shot it is just that the owl is mainly white. The original shot was taken in The Cornish Birds of Prey Centre & Animal Park in Cornwall. I have been playing about with it again; a crop here to focus tight on his beautiful eyes and selective colouring there and this is the result which I love. I hope you like it and thank you for viewing. The selective colouring was made in Photoshop Elements 6 NIKON D60 DSLR / F-stop f/9 / Exposure time 1/500 sec / ISO speed 100 / Aperture priority / Focal length 190 mm on a 70 – 300 mm Nikon lens This was the original colour shot. Okay, here we have one of the baby snowy egrets biting the bill of dad. They are looking for food that dad had brought back to the nest. This nest was in a tree along a path at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida. They do not belong to the zoo, they are free. Taken with Nikon D40 w/ 55-200mm Nikkor lens.
This was taken at The Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, FL. While walking the zoo, I noticed a lot of noise in a tree along the walkway. It was a mother Snowy Egret and her two little ones. It was the best photo I took at the zoo that day. I hope you enjoy :) Taken with Nikon D40 w/ 55-200mm Nikkor lens Thanks, Antonio

The stillness of our warmth / two / together / our love is rooted deep
Sometimes we are lucky to bear witness to some of life’s golden moments; A baby’s first steps, a proposal, a reuninon between friends… or a child’s first touch of snow. This was their moment – hopefully one of many. And I was lucky enough to be at the right place, at the right time, to capture that moment. Lady luck must’ve smiled to me on that day.

The Snowy Owl – The Snowy Owl is a large, diurnal white Owl that has a rounded head, yellow eyes and black bill. The feet are heavily feathered. A distinctive white Owl, their overall plumage is variably barred or speckled with thin, black, horizontal bars or spots. Females and juveniles are more heavily marked than males – adult males may be almost pure white, although they have up to three tail bands. Adult females are distinctly barred throughout, and have from four to six tail bands. Immatures are very heavily barred throughout, and dark spotting may codominate or dominate the overall plumage. Snowy Owl calls are varied, but the alarm call is a barking, almost quacking krek-krek-krek-krek; the female also has a softer mewling pyee-pyee-pyee-pyee or “prek-prek-prek”... So unlike the one they use in the Harry Potter films, this Hedwig is actually female. They use male birds to portray her in the film because a bird with an all white plumage looks more impressive they think! bit of unless knowledge for you eh?
