This was the best day of our Artic trip, we were so lucky to spend hours with this polar bear mum and cubs (there were actually two cubs but the other is out of shot). WILD AND FREE / / As I said on my “Polar Love” image, this was the best day of our Arctic trip. We were so lucky to spend hours with this mum and cubs as they moved around the ice flows. These cubs were around seven months old and full of joy – although they did not seem all that keen to follow mum this time! / / The sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate, which has a huge impact for the bears as this is their main hunting ground. More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so! / / I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hut! When I saw the bear theme on the front page, I decided to upload one of my favourite pastels. The ref pic was taken at the Johannesburg Zoo, in South Africa and the background was invented :) With permanent ice sheets retreating and habitat being reduced, I felt I had at least immortalised this guy in a landscape which he would no doubt prefer to be in.

An acrylic painting I did in 2002. In certain lights it looked almost as though it would swim right out of the pic and into the room :) I used an airbrush, for the first time to get the light beams effect. He is a Johannesburg zoo polar bear in real life, or should that be “unreal” :( Climate Change has already made huge inroads into their habitat…

We had our first real snow of the season last night, so I was more than ready to head out to my favorite fox location early this morning.. The foxes were a little more subdued today and harder to find (but easier to track). This male was reluctant to leave cover for a cleaner shot, but he still looks great against the snow. The Gentoo Penguin is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.

Snow storms in the high plateau areas of southern Idaho can turn into white-out blizzards. The direction of sound beyond the wind cannot be pinpointed. In Storm Deer, I tried to capture the feeling moments before the white-out hits, when the best strategy is to find cover and wait it out. The original painting is done in water mixable oils on12’‘x24’’ hardboard.
