Taken at 3am in Patagonia. / It was extremely cold.
Cold winter landscape
Sunrise at about 3 am, 65 degrees south., Gerlache Strait. Most people were tucked up in their beds, but for the restless, the freezing decks were the place to roam..Barely a moment’s darkening of the night before this happened.. then I felt I could go and sleep a little..
This is a photograph that was taken for my class “The Art of Seeing”. The assignment involved a story telling photograph using a wide angle lens, with texture in the foreground. The grass is my texture. In order to get this shot I had to lay flat on the frozen ground right up against the frozen pond. I witnessed a Blue Heron walking across the frozen pond, looking slightly bewildered. No ducks were present and no Nutria. Just the sunset, the frozen ground and me.
A peculiar winter storm started with rain, moved on to sleet, then snow, leaving everything covered in glistening ice. The beauty of it gives this long winter a sliver lining. Photo was taken at Raymond Ridge Park in Madison, WI, with Nikon Coolpix L3.

I went to a friend’s ranch in Colorado this morning just out of Monument, El Paso County. Took a few snaps when I arrived. It was minus something ridiculous so my fingers almost snapped off and the lens fogged but I’m pretty happy with the result.
Amazing that such a cold morning can seem to warm in a photograph, all because of color and light….needless to say I was freezing when I shot this and cold tripods usually don’t tend to warm your hands up well lol / Captured at Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado
Dawn near Drouin in Victoria’s Gippsland while travelling to Mt Baw Baw and the snow. It had been better a few minutes before, but there was nowhere safe to pull off the Princes Highway to get shots. I pulled off the first possible place, which wasn’t ideal, but, as I always say, you take what you’re given. ;)
Some serene, beautiful scenery starring the Little Boat. ;-)
Sunrise on a cold January (2006) morning on the Manitoba prairie. That’s snow on flat land, not a lake or sea. Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT / Film / Media: Digital / Lens: 18-55mm MY BUBBLESITE
Pike’s Peak as seen from Cherry Creek State Park reflects the Sunrise, a cold dad to be sure when I was shooting this, amazing to think that Peak is about 55 miles away as well! Processed in HDR, thoughts welcomed! / —-John
Moment(n): A minute portion of time; a point of time; force; momentum; consequence; an essential element; a deciding point, fact, or consideration; an essential or influential circumstance. Glen Affric is a glen south-west of the village of Cannich in the Highland region of Scotland, 15 miles west of Loch Ness. The area is a Caledonian Forest Reserve, a National Scenic Area and a National Nature Reserve. Often described as the most beautiful glen in Scotland, it contains one of the largest ancient Caledonian pine-woods in Scotland, where the trees range from 350-500 years old and there have been trees on the site for 8000 years, as well as lochs, moorland and mountains. This was taken early on a winter’s morning, at the moment the sun rose over a mountain ridge, on a Ricoh 500G rangefinder camera – my first test roll of Fuji Superia 200 through the thing. Scanned straight – nothing but choosing while-balance off the index print, no tweaks no nothing.

The Forgotten Farmhouse at sunrise on a cold winter’s morning. This farm is located in north central Pennsylvania along Bartlow Road, near the village of Clarkstown, PA, in Muncy Valley. The photo was taken from the highest point on the field above the farmhouse. This photo was taken early this morning, with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera through a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L telephoto zoom lens at the 95mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/250th sec at f/16. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a Manfrotto “pistol-grip” head. Your comments are always welcome!
