  • The Stocks Inn The Stocks Inn, Furzehill, near Wimborne, Dorset, England is a genuine Old English Pub. It takes its name from the village stocks which can still be found just outside the pub. The stocks were a mediaeval form of punishment and public humilation, in which offender’s feet and hands were locked in place between solid wooden boards. Prisoners were often pelted with refuse such as rotten eggs or fruit. Despite being 8 miles inland, The Stocks also played a part in Dorset’s smuggling past. It is said the cellar was used by notorious local smuggler Isaac Gulliver to store contraband. Date: 8th February 2009 Click here to read the Smuggler’s Lair poem.

  • Safe Haven The inner harbour at West Bay, near Bridport, West Dorset, England. Vessels heading east along the English Channel from here must negotiate the sometimes perilous seas around Portland Bill before they reach the calmer waters of Portland and Weymouth harbours. TV viewers may recognise West Bay as the location used for the BBC drama series ‘Harbour Lights’, starring Nick Berry as the Harbour Master of ‘Bridehaven’. St Johns Church (upper left) was consecrated in 1939 but looks much older. High cliffs to the east and west provide the village with some shelter. There has been a harbour here since the 14th century. Date: 22nd February 2009 Click here to read about West Bay’s smuggling past.

  • the next in my tiny moon madness series of shots…. a bight deep yellow moon rose from the sea down near me about ten days ago and it was just so beautiful that I had to waste a little bit of film on it…. when it came out from behind the heavy heavy storm clouds it was hiding behind it really was a thing of rare beauty….. / . / / . / and don’t forget to check out the other two in this series / . / / . / and smugglers moon one / . / . / / smugglers moon one / . / / . / and smugglers moon three / . /

  • the last of my smugglers moon shots for tonight….. I’m going to retire to the brown cordroy lounge to watch Silent Witness with a glass of pinot beachbum after this….. anyhow last full moon it rose over the magnifcent local beach all orange and luminat like I’ve rarely ever seen it before into a deep dark stormy night and it was one of those nights where every concept of grace you have ever had just gets totally readjusted on the spot…. so the last of my mini series of smugglers moon shots…. and in this one….note that there are two reflected moons… one is purple which is of course the complementary colour to the true colour of the moon and then there is a second almost hollow second reflection the moon on the storm clouds… and note that I’m not saying that they are instances of lens relection or lens halation…. that tends to manifest as hexaganal shapes and these reflections are clearly round….. I’ve never had that experience before when shooting the moon so I’d be interested in garnering other peoples opinions on what caused this to happen….. / . /

  • This is one of the last shots taken on mine and Shawn Rabon’s Sunrise trip! It also marked the end of his visit. Strangely enough it was only 06.30 and the dawn of a new day! We’d been shooting for hours and it was about our bedtime! / This shot was again taken with 9 stop ND and Grad ND to bring out the sky. / We were truly blessed with the great conditions. The colour on the horizon stayed for ages due to the sun being obscured by the high cloud. / This shot was also taken at Smugglers Cove, Hayburn Wyke, near Scarborough. • This photo is “As Is”, straight from the camera. On our early morning excursion to capture sunrise,Paul McGuire and myself found ourselves hiking down Hayburn Wyke to this lovely bay locally known as Smuggler’s Cove, near Scarbough along the North Yorkshire coastline. It was easy to imaging smugglers using this bay to bring their contraband up the narrow paths, through the thick trees where Paul and I had walked down. the stone that was laid down as a path and the steps all looked very old and well used. There is this wonderful and mysterious air about the place. Because daylight was fast taking control of the skies, I used all my filters on the front of the camera in order to get the wash of the sea on the pebbles. I love the effect I got, but Paul’s shots are so much better. They are incredible, and you should definitely check them out. Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll / 28-300mm IS zoom lens / f/29 / 3.2 seconds / ISO 100 / Cokin Filter System: ND 8 filter, ND graduated filters (120, 121) /

  • This photo is “As Is” It is not often that you find a waterfall on a beach, yet here we found one at Smuggler’s Cove, along the North Yorkshire coastline, between Scarborough and Whitby, England. The water is the Wayburn Wyke stream that falls and then makes it’s way into the sea. About 30 – 40 yards behind me was the tide rolling in onto the rocky shore. I felt that the large pebbles in the foreground made a lovely composition. This double waterfall is not huge, but it is beautiful. Thanks to Paul McGuire who suggested this wonderful place on our morning excursion. Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll / 28-300mm IS zoom lens / f/4.5 / 0.3 seconds / ISO 100 / ND 8 filter

  • One to leave you with before I disappear for a while. This is a view of the fishing village of Polperro, SE Cornwall, England. / There are not many local people living in the village, as a lot of the houses are ‘second homes’ or holiday let. I decided to do this as B+W because there are many pictures of Polperro in colour, so I thought that I will do a different view. Hope you like it. / Thank you for looking. Best Viewed Large.
