Snake, by Ian Mudie Snake / Suddenly the grass before my feet / shakes and becomes alive. / The Snake / twists, almost leaps / graceful even in terror, / smoothness looping back over smoothness, / slithers away, disapears. / And the grass is again still. And surely, by whatever means of communication / is available to Snakes, / the word is passed: / Hey, I just met a man, a monster too; / must have been oh seven feet tall / So keep away from the long grass, / it’s dangerous there. ** / I have ‘done’ that poem so often with a number of the primary classes that I’ve taught but have come across snakes only recently twice. A few months ago, at River Islands where it reared up and then fled from me across the Wollondilly River and this one, on the path down to Smoky North Beach. I waited politely for a minute or two, until, after I stepped forward, my ‘friend’ slithered away. (Even though I’m only 5’8” and shrinking.)
This is my oldest and she hates to be in photos. I had to bribe her to let me upload a picture of her.

“Anole Lizzard” (Carolinsis) Is not a camilia type lizard, but has the ability to turn every shade of brown, yellow and green. Bright green I love to see, I have many in my garden and around my home in Smoky Mountains, which is like a rainforest. The Anole like to be wet and eat bugs, an Insectavore. Anole are seen around rocks, they like to climb and prefer to be in trees and shrubs(Arborial). Are they noticed by many? We have them all over by creating an even better playground habitat. I would like to see more photos of them here on RB. When I got into watergardening, Gourley Garden came to life. I started noticing them, and lots of other critters too. Anole are on our house, laying on fence railings, in the yard, in the house at times, all around the many rocks we brought to our property from higher in the mountains. A friend gave us permission to bring ton after ton home while building the watergardens, and landscaping. My health is probably not as good as it would be if I hadn’t worked like a man, but loved it. Trees around for them to climb in, the woodland connected to Foothills Parkway. Around the house, you can see them with their flaps(dewlaps) out hunting for a mate, or territorial display of the dewlap. Or perhaps they will be just laying out enjoying the sun. I have documented them shedding their skin. My whole yard has lots of trees and shrubs, you will see them jump around in the trees if you happen to scare one or he might be after an insect. Thanks to some groups “America’s National Parks and Wildlife Habitat”, “All of North Carolina”, “Natures Wonders”,”Postcard Style”, “All the Colors of the Rainbow”, “Southern Style: A Down Home Perspective”, “Freedom in Words and Art”, “All Animals Great and Small,”and “Unconventional Artistry”, (JeffeeArt4u)’s image will spark an interest in the Anole, photograph it!, and have fun watching them. Create a better playground for them too! Look for them, they are here! They have been spotted some from eastern USA to Texas. Perhaps, in the future, I will even see more of them. Some images here and on Pbase.com/Art2license/Gourley Gardens, I guess I can call myself the Lizard Lady! (JeffeeArt4u)

Cades Cove was once a remote place in the Great Smoky Mountains. One of the ways into the Cove area was by trails made by the Native American Indians, known as the Cherokee Nation then and today. Cades Cove was once known as Kate’s Cove” after an Indian Chief’s wife. The Cove drove the Cherokee back again and again for it’s abundant wildlife and hunting. Frontiersmen cleared the land and owned cattle, raised corn and wheat. / Olivers were the first European Immigrants to come to this cove without an Indian treety, allowing them access to the Smoky Mountain Land, tipical of the Europeans. Friction between the Native Americans and the settlers were caused by this behavior, generally speaking. However, the Indians helped the John and Lurany Oliver survive their first Winter. The Calhoun Treaty one year later, gave whites permission to settle the Cove. 1826 Olivers purchased their land. The Smokies were full of Indian trails, Hyatt Lane was one of them. Upgrtaded to a road named after one of the residents that lived there. Hyatt Lane is a dusty 2 lane short cut across Cades Cove, but you will miss most of the tour if you take it. Settlers used this road to go to Tuchaleechee or Maryville to buy, sell, or trade. It took 3 days on horseback, one to get there, visit and trade the next and one to get back. If you were selling, it would probably have been chestnuts, because there were once majestic chestnut groves. Disease finally killed the trees. Chestnuts have always been a favorite! GSMNP has a site with more info. / Native American Heritage calendars on Zazzle.com I was inspired to design after the Park had its 75th Birthday, with some of this history and more…some painting and postcards I am working on…JeffeeArt4u. Art of the Smoky Mountains from a love of this place. My Father-in-Law was born in Cades Cove. And my husbands Uncle was full blooded Indian, and his grandmother, part indian. Some of the names we were kin to were the Gregorys, Ledbetters, and Whiteheads. A lot of people have a connection or feel a connection to it. I have been adding, old bible art, country, private Gourley Garden, (Anole Habitat), flora images to the National Park groups.

This Anole close-up featured in all of NC group shows its skin, and a clear look at its eyes and where it hears. Anole change colors with enviroment or temporature or situations that occur. Some of them try and hide by scrouching down or running away, which I am sure this is their natural safety mechinism.
