THE SUBJECT: / Rusting old tools from a bygone age hanging on a blacksmith’s wall bathed in a golden afternoon light. / Not only are these tools not used any more but there are fewer and fewer people who know what they were used for. THE LOCATION: / This Still Life was photographed at Timbertown, an historic theme park at Wauchope, west of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a lightly overcast summer day. THE MAKING of ‘On the Smithy’s Wall #1’: / The shot was made using natural light and a longish exposure from inside the Blacksmith’s shop with low diffused light washing in from the open double door. Another example of how I photograph the light and not just the subject so I can create a mood shot not a snapshot. / On the suggestion of a fellow camera club member I made a vertical crop of the items hanging on the wall on our left. View up the access way to the old quarry, that now serves as an open-air museum, of Pfaffenweiler. The hut in the background contained (among other things) the quarry’s smithy, it has been restored as close as possible to the old appearance. None of the 10 or 11 quarries above Pfaffenweiler, that had their height in the 16th to 19th century, is still in use today – but this museum keeps the memory of the long tradition of masonry in this village alive. First documented mentions of one of these quarries can be dated to the year 1471. The stone quarried here is a yellow sandy limestone with no or only few fragments of other rocks included in the rock matrix. The mason Jörg Kempf used in 1561 stone from a quarry in Pfaffenweiler to create the pulpit of the minster in Freiburg. Some (German) informations about the stone quarried here ++ Location: old quarry above Pfaffenweiler, Schneckental (Germany)

Sparks of hot molten steel are ejected as Weston-super-Mare’s blacksmith Nathan Bennett re-forms a freshly heated strip of iron. Nathan was happy for me to stand at a safe distance while I worked hard to click in synchrony with his hammer strikes. In the film era this would have been a much more expensive exercise, for sure! I’ve had lots of great feedback from this photo (in other places as well as on RedBubble) and I was pleased to give Nathan a RedBubble-laminated print as a thank-you gift. / . / A HUGE Thank You to the People At Work Group for featuring this photo in Sept/Oct 2009! / . /

THE SUBJECT: / This man’s name is Wayne, not Maxwell so forgive the title. I’m an old Beatles fan. / This hard working Smithy is one of a team of five blacksmiths making all the bits ‘n’ pieces for a large stainless steel and copper memorial sculpture for the bushfire victims in Victoria. Here he is making one of the many stainless steel gumnuts required for the work. / Have a close look at the face of the hammer. UPDATE: 4-12-09 / Maxwell, (real name Wayne Saunders), is a true artisan and makes many interesting, decorative and utilitarian items at his forge. / He has just launched his website Ironlord Forge with this photograph on the ‘About’ page. / Check it out! THE LOCATION: / Photographed at the Blacksmith’s forge during the 2009 Timbertown birthday celebrations at Wauchope, NSW, Australia on a great autumn day. THE MAKING of ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer #2’: / There was a lot of hammering of red hot metal happening at the anvils but I spent more time with this bloke as he was in a better position than the others in regard to background and lighting and because he was working on smaller objects he was closer to his work. / Even so I still had to use my pop-up flash at half power for a touch of fill and to help knock out the background. / Fuji S9600: RAW, 1/50sec @ f/3.8, ISO80, Auto focus, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.
