It was a cold day and the tide was far out meaning that parts of the beach that are usually cut off by the tide were accessable and I could walk a mile or so along the beach from the car park to reach this spot.

For every 10 or so times I set the alarm early and creep off out into the darkness, I get a reward of the most amazing of natural light shows. St Margarets Bay this morning was the best i’ve had the good fortune to see and suddenly the 4.a.m. alarm call seemed to be worth it. Photographs from St. Margarets Bay, Kent

  • Location: / St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England Map: / Multimap Date and Time: / 16 August.2008, 6.22 a.m. Camera details: / ISO 200 : f/22 : 0.78 second : 18mm : Nikon D40 : Nikon 18-55mm lens Shot narrative: / Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, bought one of the 4 “White Cliffs” houses at St Margarets Bay from Noel Coward in 1951. Noel Coward complained that the Bay had become ’ a beach crowded with noisy hoi polloi’ (you can just hear him saying that). Ian Fleming’s vacation house in Jamaica was famously called “Goldeneye” and the title was taken to connect the two properties with a slight helping of the Golden tones in the shot. Just down the road from me at Canterbury is the Duck Inn, near Bridge. Fleming went to the pub often, and describes in You Only Live Twice how the young James Bond was tutored by his aunt in a cottage “hard by the attractive Duck Inn”. Ian Fleming’s inspiration for Bond’s codename derived from the number of the local bus: 007 which drove past the pub. Photographs from St. Margarets Bay, Kent

A cool white balance temperature has enhanced the blues against the backdrop of a firey red sunrising sky. Photographs from St. Margarets Bay, Kent

  • St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England August 2008: Sunrise up over the English Channel on one of the most spectacular mornings i’ve witnessed at this location. The sky turned pink for just a minute before the sun rose up over the horizon.

Photographs from St. Margarets Bay, Kent

  • Location: / St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England Map: / Multimap Date and Time: / 16 August 2008, 6.14 a.m. Camera details: / ISO 200 : f/22 : 1/4 second : 18mm : Nikon D40 : Nikon 18-55mm lens Shot narrative: / Known as White Cliffs Country and one of England’s most famous natural landmarks according to the Natural Trust, the cliffs extend a few miles to the north to St Margaret’s Bay. Captured in the early morning light the glow of these magnificent cliffs is amazing. Unfortunately due to erosion, parts of these cliffs are falling into the sea and the section of beach I usually visit at St Margaret’s Bay differs each time I go with new rocks that were once cliff now at the water’s edge.

  • Location: / St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England Map: / Multimap Date and Time: / 16 August 2008, 5.10 a.m. Camera details: / ISO 200 : f/8 : 13 seconds : 18mm : Nikon D40 : Nikon 18-55mm lens Shot narrative: / A good 45 minutes before sun up early in the morning this summer. This shot shows the terrain of St Margaret’s Bay well and it’s a good 15-20 minutes “hike” from the main beach to get this far. Photographs from St. Margarets Bay, Kent

  • Location / St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England August 2008: Sun rising up over the English Channel at St Margaret’s Bay. The numerous rocks create still pools uneffected by the tides.

  • Location / St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England August 2009: A 3.30.a.m. start to get down to St Margarets Bay for the first time in a year. The pools of water shielded by the rocks are very calm and still as the tide recedes.

  • Location / St Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England August 2009: This was taken just under an hour before sunrise at 4.45 a.m. The 67 second exposure highlighted the fact that the clouds appeared to be moving faster than the water.

  • Location / St Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England August 2009: Taken 45 minutes before sunrise and facing away from where the sun rises from. The glow of red above the famous white cliffs are those from the docks at Dover which handles the cross channel ferries to France (one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world)
