  • This small McClaren Vale business owner found a creative way to sell his tanks, by sponsoring the upcoming ‘Fringe’ – the periphery of theatrical, comedic & visual events which accompany the Adelaide Festival of Arts. / The South Australian Festival usually hosts international events which are quite expensive, so the Fringe is a source of cheaper multi-entertainment options for the masses. / Explanation: / How did I do this? Good question. Do you really want to know? Ok, I won’t push it. Here’s how: / After duplicating the ‘background’ to get ‘background copy’ and throwing the ‘background’ layer away (which I do as a matter of course to achieve a transparent bottom layer – do I bother explaining this?) I then duplicated the ‘Background copy’ layer and started by drawing a path around the truck & tank, then deleting them. This allowed me to work on the background separately – firstly, by changing the hue in hue/saturation from blue to yellow. As the background car also changed to yellow and looked dreadful, I decided to throw a path around that as well, add to original selection, and delete. / From there, I experimented quite a bit, finding where to go with this. Settled on muting the red by desaturating somewhat with the hue/saturation sliders. The rhs looked great, but the shrubs on the left insisted on staying green no matter how much I messed with the green & blue sliders. Eventually, I had to draw a separate path around them, and desaturate separately (because it was the yellow which seemed to give them most colour – and I was restricted in how much I could adjust yellow without affecting the sky area). / After I had played around with the background to my satisfaction and accumulated many layers, I reduced them all to 2. (Merged down) into one with the deleted tank and truck/car which formed the background, and one ‘normal’ layer which included everything. Then I duplicated the second ‘normal’ layer, giving me 3 layers. The first one (with truck & tank delete), I set to 100% ‘Value’ in layer options. The second – complete scenario – I set to ‘Addition’ (100%) and the 3rd (duplicated 2nd) I set to ‘Normal’ (100%). / I really liked the way ‘Addition’ seemed to bring out the luminosity of the shine on truck & tank. It was colourful enough already, and I would have been prepared to go with what I had, but the increased shine (also present in the background car) seemed to give it an appealing kind of feel, quite different. camera: Lumix Panasonic DMC – FX01 / software: gimp / / ps. the original photo was just too busy to use ‘as is’. I was only trying to demonstrate a colourful tank, and opportunistic businessman – but felt the photo failed me. So set about trying to find an answer toward bringing out the tank and subduing the background. I found yellowing the sky an intriguing solution – may follow that up some more later…
