Banana Slugs are the second largest slug in the world, growing up to 25 cm long. They are so named because very often their coloring resembles a banana, bright yellow body with black spots. These colors help them to camouflage with the leaves on the forest floor. / The Banana Slug lives in moist forest floors along the Pacific Coast of North America from California to Alaska. It is a decomposer, which means it chews up leaves, and animal droppings and other dead plant material and recycles it into soil. They can be seen migrating across the path on dark damp days and at night or climbing up stumps looking for a dark place to hide preferring to hide alone. They can fit into amazingly small spaces, this probably helps them to find enclosed areas that are still damp when most others have dried out / With only one muscular foot, a slug moves slowly. How it moves can be seen when you place a slug on a piece of glass and look at it from underneath. / NOW THIS IS INTERESTING…...SLIME….. / Slime has many functions. One is to keep the slug’s skin moist so it can breathe through it. / Slime is useful in mating too. (WOW) A slug that is ready to find a mate and lay eggs leaves a chemical in the slime to attract other slugs. Another slug smells the chemical and it is a done deal…. Mates… fun… and a very easy time of it… Ok.. that is where I will end the piece on these most amazing creatures!! I once gave my niece a Stuffed Banana Slug…she loved it and still has it!! she is 19 now… so it goes to show you.. you don’t have to be classic beautiful to rate as an interesting mate… just well lubricate…OHHHHHH I better go…

When walking, Always look down / When hiking, Always looke around / When moving, Listen for the sound / Always Look, Always See, Always hear / You’ll never know? What can be found In one area of a forest that I hike for mushrooms…I found this lovely mixed patch with other fungi called ‘eyelash fungi’ and lovely moss. When I got home with the photos, I wasn’t all that thrilled by this photo till I saw the ‘green slug’....... Of course…once I uploaded PS with only a couple of the interesting functions…I emphasized the shape/tone/textures…....of what was REALLY a dying leaf. But wouldn’t it just be great if it WERE a green slug? hmmmm

I hate when I find beautiful mushrooms…that are getting munched on by critters…even though? I love slugs and snails? I love them NOT on my flora! The mushroom he’s about to chow down on is called an Orange-mat Coprinus…found with the orange ‘moss’.......always takes me a bit to ID these fellows? But this one was a bit obvious once i found the name. / These were found in Weston Bend State Park down in an area I call ‘Mushrooms Bottoms’.....a flood area right up from the Missouri River.

Luckily….I’ve only found 2 tiny baby sluggies in my garden so far. / I love the chunk of slime stuck to him and the mushroom
