Ref / with special permission from model and photographer pluschkind I bumped into this fantastic image while browsing the photography on deviant art and the photographer/model was happy to let me try my hand at drawing it. / As you can see though, I ended up painting it. oils on watercolour paper. I’ve never tried that before but i had no black watercolour paint so I thought, why not!? So all I used was black oils and turpentine to get the greys, like with watercolours. / The way the white cuts up the image reminded me of an image we’d looked at in my visual culture class, the artist had digitally erased lines through the person to create white tribal markings. this erasure gave me the idea for the title of this piece. This Portrait is available in my 2009 calendar!

Photographed last year during the fires of Southern California. The smokey air created unusual colors that reflected off the water. Taken from the Santa Barbara breakwater. Canon 1Ds Mark II / 600 mm focal length / 1/8 second exposure / f/16
Surfing just before dawn. The water color comes from the dawn light reflecting off high clouds in the sky. Canon 1Ds Mark II / 600 mm focal length / 1/15 second / f/4 / ISO 50 Panning and trying to keep the surfer in one spot in the frame produces the fluidity and quality to the water.
Photographed in Santa Barbara, California during a smokey morning from a nearby wild fire which created the colors in the water. Canon 1Ds Mark II / f/16 / 1/8 second / ISO 50 / 600 mm focal length
Approaching wave photographed near Ventura, California Canon 1Ds Mark II / 600 mm focal length / f/8 / 1/10 second

Imagine the sunrises, sunsets, storms, and sunny days this water tower has seen in all its years. This day was not a particuarly memorable day in its history, but it will be remembered it as it appeared through the lens of an antique camera and now captured forever in this digital medium. The Clack produces only 8 negatives on a roll of 120 film. This forces the photographer to slow down and carefully compose each shot. This slowing down of time is exactly what is being portrayed in this photograph. The colors and clouds bleed into the background, highlighting how little has changed in this scene over time. Created using a 1950’s AGFA Clack camera with 4 year expired Fuji Velvia RVP120 (ISO 50) slide film cross processed with C-41. No digital manipulation necessary! Lake Falls in Matthiessen State Park is possibly the most magical, spiritual waterfall I have ever photographed. It is special and always blesses me with a wonderful spiritual feel to it. It inspires me to be religous in some way that I cannot explain. / The whirlpool is like God. He has no beginning and no end.
