  • Another image taken yesterday at the local beach, it’s quite simplistic really so I would love to hear some opinions.

Background Information: / A wind turbine is a rotating machine which converts the kinetic energy in wind into mechanical energy. If the mechanical energy is used directly by machinery, such as a pump or grinding stones, the machine is usually called a windmill. If the mechanical energy is then converted to electricity, the machine is called a wind generator, wind turbine, wind power unit (WPU), wind energy converter (WEC),or aerogenerator. This article discusses electric power generation machinery. Windmill discusses machines used for grain-grinding, water pumping, etc. The article on wind power describes turbine placement, economics and public concerns. The wind energy section of that article describes the distribution of wind energy over time, and how that affects wind-turbine design. See environmental concerns with electricity generation for discussion of environmental problems with wind-energy production. • Sutton Bank is a high vantage point at the very edge of the Hambleton Hills and the North York Moors with extensive views over the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray. Because of its location and high elevation, Sutton Bank is popular with gliding and flying enthusiasts. Predominant landmarks include Whitestone Cliff and Roulston Scar, the former overlooking the mysterious (and reputedly bottomless !) Lake Gormire. Close nearby are the villages of Sutton-under-Whitestonecliff, and Kilburn (famous for the White Horse of Kilburn, and Robert Thompson – the “Mouseman” of Kilburn). / Sutton Bank is one of the most spectacular inland cliffs anywhere in Britain, and carries one of the most hair-raising main roads in the country. The near vertical drop from top to bottom is around 140 metres, and crosses at least two major geological boundaries. / The Sutton Bank National Park Centre is on the western edge of the fabulous North York Moors National Park – home to the largest expanse of heather moorland in England. It provides the perfect introduction to the National Park, its people, history and wildlife. Nikon D60 / HDR in Photomatix & pp in PS CS3 / Lens: Nikkor 18-200mm / 1/160 f/9.0 ISO200

  • I took the viewfinder and my Canon down to the beach on Sunday to take some summer shots. This is one of the results from that day. The seagull flew into the shot and I didn’t notice it until I started processing this one. There was a feeling of closure and finality in this shot with the gull included. I really enjoy a bright sunny day with a few clouds scattered across the sky. Especially sitting down on the beach, really makes me feel like a kid again. Original shot cropped and layered once, with hue adjustment and a warming filter added. See here for instructions on how to create this image. • I titled this abstract (an aerial view), “A Warming Trend”..it is a small play on words that don’t really come near to reflecting the magnitude of what is happening to the earth…islands in the Caribbean are being slowly swallowed up by the increasing tides caused by global warming…it’s interesting too, that in 1802, Wordsworth was so concerned about the loss of nature in a consumerist society, that he wrote the poem below, which can just as easliy be applied to society today…I have also included a short verse that I think we should all adopt as our resolution for the future... samples of other abstracts in the series are shown below. Watercolour on Arches Hot Pressed Paper The world is too much with us; late and soon, / Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers; / Little we see in Nature that is ours; / We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon! / This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon, / The winds that will be howling at all hours, / And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers, / For this, for everything, we are out of tune; / It moves us not. -Great God! I’d rather be / A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn; / So might I, standing on this pleasant lea, / Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn; / Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea; / Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.W.Wordsworth I have come to terms with the future. / From this day onward I will walk easy on the earth. / Plant trees. / Kill no living things. / Live in harmony with all creatures. / I will restore the earth where I am. / Use no more of its resources than I need. / And listen, listen to what it is telling me. / - M.
