Often the storm chasing day ends not with the last glow of the setting sun, but with a photogenic show of pyrotechnics dancing from cloud to cloud and into the ground and lasting well into the night. This strike was captured just a few miles from my home after a long day of driving and looking for marvelous supercells and their awe-inspiring structures. Typically, any isolated cells that form during the day in western Oklahoma will race through the portions of Oklahoma that I call home, I just have to drive back ahead of the racing squall line and on such days will end the hunt with a tripod and a camera on this gravel road. It isn’t a part of my public offered storm chasing tours, but instead just my time to relax, snap shutters and enjoy my favorite hobby – lightning photography. I’ve always hoped for a dead centered strike at the end of this long gravel driveway. So many times I have closed my eyes and envisioned this very shot. Then, one night in 2006 after a long day’s work of hunting down tornadoes I ended my chase day in this fashion, opened the shutter and waited – “bang” – I had it! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be sure to check out my company, StormTours.com. Colorado is certainly known for it’s parks, and this one I happened upon out of the blue one day….it really is a majestic site, with these odd rock formations just jetting straight up from the earth, as if reaching for the sky. Garden Of the Gods Park, outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is without a doubt one of my all time favorite places to shoot at….the light there just dances, especially during the golden hours just after sunrise…..Pike’s Peak is in the background, with the wind blowing the snow into the sky. / Thoughts welcomed! As the sun sets against the Sandia Range outside of Albuquerque New Mexico, the light was just amazing, with the storms coming in and the color changing almost every second, I set up my tripod and had at it…I really wanted an image that conveyed a sense of high drama and showcased the light for what it was, so I sat and thought to myself and said “What if Ansel Adams was shooting this, what would he do??” and wallah, this is how it translated. Thoughts welcomed! / —John

I was delighted to catch the calm surface for reflections, as the low rising sun was casting its first orange glow over the autumn colors.

Taken in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, USA. Bryce is so amazing, all those rock pinnacles thrusting upwards from the deep canyon, with such amazing colours, and some of them look like they are candy coated ! I got very lucky here, the past few days around Bryce had been real stormy, and the park was closed the day before ! Just a matter of setting up the tripod and waiting for the ‘right’ moment ! It snowed later on in the day ! This was taken on a Ricoh KR10 super, on Fuji Velvia slide film, asa 50. Probably f22, I can’t be sure. I scanned the slide with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and edited in PS CS3, a little tidying with the spot removal tool was necessary, and a little reduction of ‘noise’. Scanned from a Fuji Velvia transparency, image shot on my Ricoh KR10 super, mounted on a tripod and polariser fitted, f22, iso 50, don’t know the shutter speed ! / Scanned with my Nikon Coolscan VED into Adobe PS CS3, with a little dust and noise removal. Best on Full Size A summer cornfield along Route 869 between Osterburg and Pavia, Pennsylvania. This image is actually fairly deceptive. I spent a lot of time working on a b&w sky and doing sc on the world below in order to create a somewhat threatening summer thunderstorm image. It fit as the world you see here, all sunny and golden, is actually thanks to the texture I eventually chose. In all reality, just as I took my last shot and headed back to the car big giant ploppy drops of rain began to fall … and those pretty clouds you see there Opened Up!!! LOL Image taken August 8, 2008 with the Nikon D40x and the 18-135mm Nikon lens. I was inspired by a beautiful image from Svetlana Sewel called Road To … to resurrect this one from the pile and play a bit. It was treated with HDR in Photomatix from 5 images, all from a single handheld, at evals of +/-2. The texture added is courtesy of Princess of Shadows at Deviant Art. I also cropped a bit of the sky.

Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Pretty much a tourist snapshot of the Falls, which I thought I would share with you ! / A rather crowded place, justifiably so, who wouldn’t want to see this sight ? The Canyon has some amazing colours, and I found the best time was towards evening to be viewed at it’s best. The vertiginous slopes are very loose and crumbly, and I wondered how those trees maintain their perilous foothold !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, polariser, tripod, f22, 1/3 sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in PS CS3, levels/curves/selective colour adjustments. At 93 feet high, Yaquina Head Lighthouse is Oregon’s tallest lighthouse. The tower, made from 370,000 bricks from San Francisco, is double walled for insulation and dampness protection. One story, which has circulated for years, tells of a workman falling from the scaffolding into the hallow between the masonry walls where his body could not be retrieved. A fine story, and perhaps an explanation for the station’s purported ghost, but records show no workers were killed during construction. Strong winds did blow one worker off the cliff. Amazingly, his oils skins acted somewhat like a parachute and he only received minor injuries. The lighting of the first order Fresnel lens was delayed due to parts of the lantern somehow being lost in transit. Finally, after almost two years of toil, the light shone for the first time on August 20, 1873.
