Grim Reaper – noun / the personification of death. [Origin: 1925–30] Old Slavic tribes viewed Death as a woman in white clothes, with a never-fading green sprout in her hand. The touch of the sprout would put a human to an everlasting sleep. This image survived Christianization well into the Middle Ages, only being replaced by the more traditional European image of a walking skeleton as late as in the 15th century. Death as a sentient entity is a concept that has existed in many societies since the beginning of recorded history. In Western cultures, death is usually given the name, the “Grim Reaper”, and shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe, and wearing a midnight black gown, robe or cloak with a hood, or sometimes, a white burial shroud. Usually when portrayed in the black-hooded gown, only his eyes can be seen.

She was given the nicknames the “Bronze Venus” or the “Black Pearl”, as well as the “Créole Goddess” in anglophone nations. In France, she has always been known as “La Baker”. Baker was the first African American female to star in a major motion picture, to integrate an American concert hall, and to become a world-famous entertainer. She is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States (she was offered the leadership of the movement by Coretta Scott King in 1968 following Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, but turned it down), for assisting the French Resistance during the Second World War and being the first American-born woman to receive the highest French military honor, the Croix de Guerre, and for being an inspiration to generations of African American female entertainers and others. I’ve realized I probably shouldn’t listen to Kate Miller-Heidke as it takes my mind to very bizarre places. It was during one of this “trips” that I came up with this little character. Originally she was meant to look quite sad but she came out rather… well lonely, either way I think she looks cute with her purple ribbon. I am also working on a painting with her but for now she makes quite a nice little shirt guardian.
