  • When I took this photo, I had a split second to do so and did not have time to mentally realize that a vertical shot would have been better. I’ve wondered for a while how I could improve this image. Then, a photo rater named Eyal Nahmias suggested adding layers to give the bluebird more head room. I took his advice and came up with this newly-recreated version of Bluebird with Skink. I think it gives the image a fresh, new, more spacious look. Hope you like it.

  • This Eastern Blue tongue lizard, one of Our best Aussie Icons, was not too impressed when his morning bask in the sun was interrupted for this photo shot? This shot was taken in a small woodland patch near Murrurundi in the Upper Hunter region of NSW, AU. • This feisty Slender Mallee blue tongue Cyclodomorphus melanops (an endangered species in NSW) was not terribly impressed by being captured in some overnight traps set in the spinifex. He even latched onto my collegue who was holding it for the photos. This animal is also adult size so they are much smaller than ‘normal’ blue tongues. This shot was taken between Broken Hill and Wentworth in far western NSW. • I took this photo of a male Eastern bluebird with a skink in its bill several years ago. Originally, it was a landscape shot which cut too close to the top of the bird’s head so I reworked it into portrait mode, changed the background, and added the dry brush filter to give it a different look from the original. So, for those of you who have seen “Bluebird with Skink,” here’s another version of the same shot. Regardless of which version you prefer, you’ve got to give this little bird credit for landing a big one! He astounded me with the catch when he lit on the bluebird box with THIS in his beak for the babies’ lunch, his lunch, or both! What a hunter! The Eastern bluebird, once endangered, has made a dramatic comeback through the installation of bluebird houses along bluebird trails. These lovely little creatures are cavity nesters whose existence was threatened with the loss of trees through land clearing for development. Today, the bluebird is thriving thanks to the many boxes that have been placed through both private and public endeavors. I have had the pleasure of having these birds inhabit my property for well over ten years now; I look forward to many more years of their neighborly presence.

  • I love these little Garden Lizards, they are so tiny and fragile looking, their little toes so delicate and perfect…enjoy the humble Australian Garden Lizard. I use a Canon Powershot A480.

  • We caught it…and it was strange. He was unharmed:)

  • Australia is a paradise for reptiles housing more than 850 species, the majority are endemic to the country. This calendar includes some of my favourite reptiles from Australia. All photos have been taken whilst working in Sydney and the arid zones of New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory. I hope you enjoy each month as much as I enjoyed finding and photographing each species.

  • This fellow is one lucky bobtail. I found him in…...a disused pit toilet on our property. I do mean disused for many years, and not actually that deep. I just happened to lift the lid, thinking we really must just fill this in and eliminate the whole set up, when who should I discover, but one very weak and skinny bobtail stuck down there. He/she (they are hard to determine gender) had scrabbled through a small gap in the upper structure, landed with a thud, and possibly had been stuck for a month or two. Bobtails can’t digest food unless the are around 30 degrees C in body temp, so the summer months are vital for fattening up. This isn’t the first bobtail I have nursed, having nursed others through a nasty virus they are prone to – a bobtiail headcold, I have cleaned maggots from a fly blown wound in a bobtail’s jaw…..hence we have named our property ‘The Lucky Bobtail” This Bob is rather cute, and pretty cuddly. / Featured, ‘All Pets Great and Small’, September 2009

  • Best viewed large This is a selection of images from my recent visit to Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. I stayed in the fabulous Cradle Mountain Lodge, and all of the creatures shown were wild and were right on my doorstep. The shots were taken with a Canon 5D and either a 100-400mm lens (wombats, pademelons, and currawong), a 24-105mm lens (landscape scene), or my 105mm macro lens (lizard feet). This composite was uploaded so that a card can be ordered as a special thankyou to a fabulous booking agent who did us a huge favour!
