A perspective of a mole cricket (the big one) – compared to a ‘normal’ cricket. Quite the size difference, eh?! You wouldn’t catch ME holding these guys!
Usually in winter the road up the mountain is closed,in fact it was closed while I was up on Newfound Gap. After getting a few shots I headed down the mountain only to find I was locked in,so I went back up and got this photo. Shortly after a park ranger escorted me down the mountain. It was nice being the only one on the whole road,a rare treat.
This cabbage was on a stall in Pickering, / North Yorkshire, freshly cut. You can’t get / veg more fresh than that.
Another view of the Hummer to give you an idea of the / width of it. Look how far the seats are apart. All the / transmission is up in the cab between the driver and / the second man. The headlights are a bit wider than / a Landrover apart, look at the overhang!! About 4” / wider than a Bedford TK Lorry. You can drive this or a similar one at the Truegrip site near Canterbury, Kent. www.truegrip.co.uk for more info

These monsters come thru the channel so often you’d think Americans had already bought everything from Asia. Not.
The Pacific Coast was concerned that the Confederates, the breaking away side of America’s Civil War, would invade the Golden Gate. (By the way, the Golden Gate is the opening of the bay, not the name of the bridge. LOL!) How they thought it would happen remains a mystery but cannon were placed in three strategic locations – both sides of the bay and an island in the middle – because none of the cannon had the range to cover the area in the 1800’s. As soon as weaponry advanced enough to make these cannon too vulnerable to shipboard weapons, a monster bunker with fortified walls was build under the bridge on the San Francisco side. The walls were 7 feet thick and the cannon could easily cover the entire opening of the bay. Neither set of cannon were ever fired in a hostile action. PS Yes, this is not the original shot for this place but the new one is much better and shows both of the cannon mounts.
On the banks of the bunker below the Golden Gate Bridge or San Francisco CA, there were at least 10 or so young children with other tourists watching as many nutty people out in water that usually kills people rather anonymously. These guys had screaming witnesses every time they managed to ride a breaker more than 1 second. And the ones who made it all the way until they stopped were cheered like Olympic athletes. LOL! This shot was taken from slightly off the path at an overhang of approximately the level of the bottom of the bridge. In other words, following this trail at night would be a very uncool experience. Again a shot taken with the Panasonic TZ4 but with considerable enhancement from Corel to clean up enough noise to deafen you right thru this website.
a placid shore bird at the edge of San Fransisco Bay searching the surf for breakfast.
Any wonder why an earthquake or fire (or both) levels San Francisco easily? There isn’t enough room between the SUPER-EXPENSIVE homes with a San Francisco Bay view to paint the walls. In some cases, these houses are closer together than I’ve been living in an apartment! I can’t even guess what these places cost but with the depressed economy they might be down to an affordable $2,000,000 these days. Robin Williams home is NOT like this and he has a yard and fence and normal human space around it. Ah, the privileges of the rich and famous!
This side of the prison isn’t seen as often because it doesn’t face the shoreline of San Francisco. However, with the Nikon D80’s 70 – 300 mm lens, it was a rather easy view from Treasure Island.
Treasure Island is one half of the island that bisects the Bay Bridge over the San Francisco Bay. The “treasure” half used to be a top level navy base with access only from two tiny roads coming off the bridge, the sea, or the air. But in the base closure flurry, Treasure Island’s military packed up and left – left behind what’s mostly a toxic ghost town. The sad part is that some people were left there, either unable or unwilling to move and the “newer” parts of the island’s development are basically slums in newer dwellings. I can’t imagine being trapped there by water and a freeway with precious little to do but watch the crabs watch you watching them. The other side of Treasure Island, tho, is a place that I’ve been told I need to see so I’ll get a ride there someday and leave my van at home…
Sparrow-sized but slim and with a long, deeply notched tail, the male has a black head, white collar and a drooping moustache. Females and winter males have a streaked head. In flight the tail looks black with broad, white edges. This farmland and wetland bird suffered a serious population decline making it a Red List species. / Where to see them Typically found in wet vegetation but has recently spread into farmland and, in winter, into gardens. When singing the male usually perched on top of a bush, or reed. / When to see them all year round. What they eat Seeds and insects

Taken at the Bar U Ranch near Longview, Alberta. July 1/09. / This ranch is famous for producing quality Percheron draught horses and maintaining the breed’s purity. / This is a small Percheron team being used to haul wagons to ferry passengers/tourists around the ranch during the Canada Day celebrations. ‘Small’ is a relative term in this instance as they still have hooves the size of dinner plates. / These amazing horses are bred for pulling heavy loads and have huge feet with hairy fetlocks, strong necks and shoulders and incredibly strong haunches. http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/art/border:blackwithdetail/product:laminated-print/size:medium/view:preview/3381290-2-small-team.jpg!:http://www.redbubble.com/people/alabca/art/3381290-2-small-team
