A little while ago I was contacted by Eliza Grey from the Advocate (the newspaper that services the North West coast of Tasmania) asking if I would be interested in participating in an article about RedBubble. Of course I was only too happy to oblige being as RedBubble itself and all you wonderful people in the RB community have helped me so much in my journey as a photographer. When the photographer from the Advocate came out to take a few pictures to accompany the article, I took him down to the boat ramp as the views down there are magnificent! I was a little apprehensive though… See, we were having a king tide at the time, and when he asked me if I would be game enough to go out to the end of the jetty which was all but underwater I had to think twice… It wasnt me I was concerned about, HE WANTED ME TO TAKE MY CAMERA OUT THERE!!! It all turned out well in the end though, both myself and my beloved Sami survived the experience and below is the result. Many thanks to RedBubble and every-wonderful-one who has made me feel so welcome here.

  • The MacTime When My MacDad Passed Away

Back in 2000, on 14th August, came the sad news that Dad had gone on to meet the Lord. I was totally devastated. I did not believe in God at the time. / Over the years as I was growing up, I had always been Dads ‘little helper’. Dad was a carpenter by trade but could turn his hand to just about anything. He fixed his own motorcars, and I was always covered in as much grease as him,. He made tin chimneys for peoples homes, I was there, passing this or that as he needed it. He was a grave digger for the local undertaker, I was Not with him on those jobs :0 . He erected fencing on properties, I was there, not of great help but there anyway. Dad did all sorts of odd jobs for all sorts of people. I was there whenever I could be. Dad had always been a heavy drinker but as a child, I didn’t see that, he was my Dad and I loved him. / After I had married, moved away then moved back, Dad and I continued with our closeness. Then one day, because of his drinking habit, we had a difference of opinion. It was a doozy. I didn’t talk to him for several years. Then he had a heart attack which thawed my heart a tad because he was not allowed to drink anymore, but I was still angry with him. Then he and Mum moved to Queensland. I missed them both so much. / After a few years up there, Mum and Dad, moved back to NSW. Mum and Dad both came to the Lord there. Then he had to have both knees replaced, major op. I went to look after Mum as she had had a stroke a couple of years before. Dad and I became close again, but it didn’t last. Another huge argument occurred and I went home. We made up after a time, and all was ok again as long as we were not living too close, the phone was good enough. Just three months later, God took Dad Home. / We all, five of us, converged on Mum. The time of arrangements went by in a blur. Dad was buried. We were all stressed. / My brother Allen, and his wife were Christians and I was amazed at how calm he was and how he went about the task of ‘executer’ of Dads will etc. The day after Dad was buried, one of the family, suggested McDonnell’s. Ok was the reply. I’m not keen on Macca’s so went to KFC for my chicken and……took it into into Macca’s Well, that is a ‘no no‘, against the law to take food from one outlet, into another. No problem, wrapped a Big Mac paper around my KFC box and tucked in :) :0 . / That was the beginning of one of the funniest ‘eat out’ lunches ever. We started (very discreetly of coarse), to mock, poke fun at, wave to and laugh at other people. The more we did it, the more we laughed and egged each other on. A lady on the outside, waved to someone inside. We all waved back to her. The look on her face was classic. Guess what? We nearly cried laughing at her. We were truly like little kids running amuck. Then came the throwing of our rubbish at each other. Allen’s wife, in mock disgrace at us all, move to another table. She didn’t stay there too long. We threw all the rubbish at her until she came back to our table. We laughed like we had never laughed before. Other people in Macca’s either laughed with or at us, or turned away in disgust at these grown ups carrying on as we were. (The youngest of us was I think about 32 years old?) We didn’t care, we were having fun. We needed the release. During the coarse of our ‘fun’, someone started to say ‘mac’ in front of all their words. Can you imagine the results of this. We all started to do the same. We stumbled over words, laughed about it, stumbled more and laughed more. / “MacPass MacThe MacSalt. . . . . MacThrow MacThe MacPaper MacAt MacAllen. . . . MacThat MacPerson MacHas MacTheir MacHat MacOn MacSideways. . . .“ MacEtc, MacEtc, MacEtc / We were MacHappy. We had the best time and MacLunch took quite a few hours as you could MacImagine J:) :-) / I remember later in the afternoon back at Mums house, after we had calmed down considerably and nursed our sore and aching sides, Allen saying, / “I defy anyone to guess that we had just buried our Dad the yesterday”. / The next day, Sunday 20th August, 2000, my youngest sister and I, gave our lives to the Lord. I didn’t stayed on the true path. I had a massive backslide. But the Lord tapped me on the shoulder again about 4 years ago. I am never going to get off His Highway again. I am so MacHappy with my MacLot now. / P.S. We did clean up our own mess in Macca’s too.

As a big sister, it is my duty and responsibility to embarrass the crap out of my little sister in celebration of her 21st birthday. Happy birthday Ally. Remember the time we dared each other to eat cat food? / Remember cleaning the shed? / Remember having rides on the lawn mower? / Remember “teaching the cats to swim”? / Remember putting the trampoline against the fence to make a waterslide? / Remember doing a Halloween play where Princess Diana was decapitated? Remember squirting toothpaste all over the bathroom and thinking mum wouldn’t notice? / Remember playing wrestling on the front lawn? / Remember breakfast picnics? / Remember making our own outdoor toilet and hiding it from mum? / Remember spitting in our ice cream to make it go sloppy? / Remember doing the box thing with Dada’s video camera? And for the record, I love my sister and have waaaaay more embarrassing photos than this. You got off easy kiddo! :)

The Warrior and his Painted Horse ride in united spirit on their journey and quest. I am the warrior. Sometimes I dream of myself in the masculine form, other times I dream of myself in the feminine form. i believe that my dreams are influenced by whatever kind of power I am feeling at the time. Ambition and drive, or Love and everyday life, whatever the reason is that I dream this way, I always dream in full spectrum and vivid colours most lucid.” by Karon Melillo d’Vega / Karon Melillo d’Vega / Under the Azaleas / “Original Acrylics painting by Karon Melillo d’Vega“ / “The cat stalks its prey in the bed of Marigolds under the Azaleas.“ / Winter Morning in Montana / ”_ The country road on the left takes you to Brown’s Bridge and the Blackfoot River near Clearwater Montana. Photograph taken just after sunrise on a cold winter morning ~ about minus -10 F degrees. Great day for fishing for Whitefish, but baby was it cold outside brrrrrrr. There is frost on the trees, and it was just wonderful all the sparkling light reflecting in the frost, snow and ice._” 2008 Karon Melillo d’Vega / To a wonderful Dad at Christmas / “A Partridge in a Pear Tree“ / Regàtta à Argenteuil / Original Acrylics painting by Karon Melillo d’Vega 1987 / “My study of the great Claude Monet and his beautiful painting / “Regàtta à Argenteuil ~ “I truly admire his amazing works and skills and he is one of my major influences” 2008 Karon Melillo d’Vega / Charming Farm / “It was fun playing with colours, when i tried the pink on the sky it just made it really pop out LOL“ / Seasonal Transition / “Original Acrylics painting by Karon Melillo d’Vega“ / “I was living in New Jersey at the time that I painted this from my memory of Colorado. It is my imagination which I based this painting on.” / Steel Abstractions / “Macro photography of an antique truck hood i discovered high in the mountains wilderness of Montana.“ / Noel / “A Christmas card i designed using a photograph i took of the Christmas tree and presents in the Disneyland Hotel in California December 2007. Decorated in PhotoShop“ / Still Life in Watercolours / “Original watercolour painting by Karon Melillo d’Vega 1986“ / The Mission Mountains ~ Montana / Standing high on the mountains above the tree line of the forest of the / National Bison Range looking east toward the magnificent Mission Mountains. Photographed in August 2008 ~ the Mission Mountains and the Mission valley with a view of the community of St. Ignatius. This area i’m viewing is owned by the Confederated Tribes and Nations of Salish-Kootenai Flathead Indians Reservation” / Diamond Lake Montana / “_One of my favourite pristine lakes of Montana, / Diamond Lake is a volcanic crater lake located at approximately 5400 feet elevation high in the mountains of western Montana near the Idaho border. Lush forests of the Lolo National Forest, springs and creeks, and an abundance of wildlife and wilderness surround this beautiful fresh-water spring and creek fed lake. Teeming with Brook Trout and native Cutthroat Trout as well as colourful frogs and many species of waterfowl, it’s such an exhilirating experience to take a canoe out on the lake and spend the day fishing. The water is so crystal clear that i can see down to the bottom of the lake and watch the fish swimming around in the underwater plants and tree logs that have sank to the bottom. With heavy snowfall during the winter, the spring melt and runoff causes this lake to rise dramatically, and some of the trees which were growing near the banks will fall into the lake. Trees that have fallen recently are floating and drifting constantly ~ creating a delightful habitat for miniature landscapes growing on the logs, while other trees which have been floating on the lake for years become water-logged and sink to the bottom. This creates a wonderful underwater habitat for the fish. It is written that Diamond Lake was once a volcano that erupted approximately 10,000 years ago and this lake was formed as a result. I must say that while canoeing in this lake it is a sensational experience knowing this is a volcanic crater lake. i cannot describe the emotions felt while being in a canoe in this lake ~ it is wonderful_” / Lilac Blossoms / “I love the beauty and fragrance of lilacs in springtime“ / MacIntosh Apple Blossoms / “From the tree in the meadow on my land“ / Diamond Lake / “Diamond Lake literally sparkles like diamonds in the evening sun. Photograph taken from my canoe. It was a wonderful and delightful experience to be canoeing on the lake as the sun was setting, the sunlight was dancing on the water. There was a gentle breeze which rippled the water and it was so fun to be canoeing and fishing and enjoying this pristine wilderness. Caught some very nice Brook Trout“ / The Clearwater River in Winter / ”_ I love the Clearwater River. Born in the beautiful mountains of Montana near Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness area, this pristine fresh water river is teeming with life. Largest crayfish i have ever seen in my entire life, and a wonderful variety of Trout including Rainbow, Cutthroat, Bull, Brown, as well as Whitefish. This wild and beautiful wilderness is abundant with wildlife and Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, a variety of Hawks, Great Horned Owls and Swans. One of my favourite rivers to fish, and favourite areas to hike and explore. The only way to get this shot is to stand on the bridge of the highway which crosses the river, very dangerous, but worth it_” / Chinese Ringneck Pheasant / “This is one of the Chinese Ringneck Pheasant roosters that I raised from 1-day old chicks. i purchased them from a hatchery. I think he is really beautiful. and once a year the pheasants molt their feathers. I collect the feathers, especially the tail feathers to use in arts and crafts. No matter that these pheasants were hand raised since babies, they remain always wild. They sleep indoors at night. I have built for them wonderful flight pens that are large and completely enclosed, thereby protecting them from cougars, coyotes and great-horned owls. They have perches which I made from lodgepole pine. As you can see, this rooster is standing next to the door entry into his house, which is constructed inside a log cabin. When I go inside the log cabin, there are doors of entry into each of the houses where I add fresh straw for bedding and nesting materials. The hens lay beautiful eggs, which are delicious to eat and quite a treat. Once a year the hens will sit a nest of eggs and hatch the cutest little babies!“ / “When I am exploring in the wilderness, I take a much different approach than most “hikers”. I usually hike barefoot (weather permitting) and I walk softly and carry a big gun. LOL I have encountered cougars and bears many times, which always gives me such a heartracing experience. We acknowledge each other and we separate ourselves from each other. Because i only takes a few steps at a time while absorbing the scenery, sounds and movements, I have had the delightful experience of up close and personal encounters with a wide variety of wildlife. One time, I had camped in a tent overnight, and rose early the next morning to walk by the creek ~ (in my barefeet) ~ as I was standing with my back to the creek, I heard the sound of a stick breaking, and without moving my body only turned my head to look back over my shoulder ~ and there was an enormous 7-point Bull Elk drinking from the creek not 20 feet away from me! Involuntarily I spoke out loud a sudden sharp intake of air and said “IT’S AN ELK!!!” I don’t know why I said it, the words just came out! The Elk reared up on its hind legs so surprised because he did not know I was standing right there in front of him until I spoke. He reared up on his hind legs, spun around and ran so fast back into the forest it sounded like thunder!” by Karon Melillo d’Vega

So, last week I uploaded some art of a tattoo design I had done for my sister, Sam. I called it “Pressure” as that is the name of the song that the lyrics in the design came from. / Pressure by Paramore from the album All We Know Is Falling / Original Linework by Me: / Original design with color by Me: / Yesterday, 10/21/09, Sam went to Sacred Heart – a tattoo shop in Chattanooga, TN to get the outline done. After months of talking with their artists and looking through their portfolios, she decided to have Josh Griswold do her ink. See his online portfolio over at myspace HERE He even has an upcoming feature in East Coast Ink Magazine Sam really felt that she connected with Josh better than the other artists and she felt that his style would work best with my design. Plus….he’s in LOVE with my birds! :) / Josh is using some newer needles that are tapered – this allows for smoother entry into the skin and better glide allowing for a faster, neater tattoo. Plus, it holds more ink and puts more into the skin making the tattoo stay brighter, longer. The coolest part, I think, is that Josh is a highly funcioning Autistic! Tattooing is his focus, his center and he’s an amazing artist! It took Josh 1 1/2 hours to do the outline and I am sooooooo pleased with the outcome! He shrank the design a bit so that it would fit Sam’s arm better and he tweeked the ribbon a bit, giving it rougher edges and making it fit the design a little tighter. Other than that, he really kept to my design and it looks fabulous! Sam sent me the pics in a text message last night and I actually cried! Why? Because I am honored that my sister is getting my art on her skin, part of the design on her arm is a symbol for me and our mom, the tattoo artist has done such a wonderful job, and Sam LOVES it! :) So, here it is…..step one in bringing my tattoo design to life! I can’t wait to see it finished and colored! It sounds like the yellows, oranges, greens, and light blues will be UV reactive ink so most of her tatt is going to glow under black lights! I’m so jealous! LOL :)

Thank you for the time and effort you put in to making this the best art site anywhere on the internet today, and for adding that personal touch and being always open to listening to new ideas. You really do rock and excel at what you do. other works that sold this week from my studio / / This week I was thrilled that I sold an original painting of Two Dolls along with 2 giclee prints – one of Ocean Angel and the other of I’m a Little Teapot to a lady in Victoria who made contact privately. I have never met her before, and not sure if she saw me on RB or my website or was referred by another…I must ask her, it’s good to know these things. Thought it might be good to provide some examples of how they might look on the wall stretched as canvas prints or as giclee paper prints under glass… what you see here are giclee prints on canvas done on my printer of Ocean Angel and Two Dolls, one is stretched by the framer professionally, and the other was stretched by my husband on a A3 board… the “I’m a Little Teapot” is the original painting in a white box frame… gives you some idea of how they look up on the wall… always so much nicer once framed or stretched.. but i sell most of my work loose, it’s so much easier to post that way, and then one can choose the frame and matt or style they prefer to best suit the home/wall/paint colour. These are purely examples…but give a good indication. / If you’re interested in an original painting, please contact me for availability and price, alternatively, originals not available are still available as prints here on redbubble.
