These woods whisper so loudly, and grow with such a brute force unto me, that no matter what, all I can do is to retreat to contemplation… History and facts: / “The Convent of Capuchos of Sintra is one of the many examples of 16th century religious piety in Portugal and became known for the extreme simplicity of its construction. Built on a very small scale with cells and dormitory lined with cork and a chapel whose vault is formed by rock itself. / The Convent followed the principle of universal fraternity and brotherhood of the Franciscan monks. The inhabitants belonged to the Province of Arrábida (South of Lisbon), of the Order of Friars Minor Regular and Observant (Grey Friars). José Ramos

Personally this is one of my favourites; as it reminds me of a boys journey through life and the steps he has to learn to climb. Everytime I look at it, the boy reminds me much of myself and the steps and the journeys that I have taken in life; the places I’ve gone, the people I’ve met, and all the adventures and affairs. Commonplace, ubiquitous, merely there, / The steps were just ordinary steps. / Oh, hundreds of years old, / But….steps, just the same, / One doesn’t think of steps in exalted terms, / The fluting of a column, reaching to the sky, / Or the half moon balcony on a 18th century building, / No, just…..steps. / You can’t conjure up imagination, / Speaking round the flatness of a step. / Or the straight front. / Even the curve of the edge, as it reaches to the adjoining surface, / Isn’t remarkable…. / Not like the beveled edge of the balustrade, / The hand routing of the base stone. / There is exquisiteness here, but it’s not in the steps. / They are purely utilitarian, even amidst the beauty of surrounding works, / No eye will cast upon them and exclaim, / “My god, George! Look at how level this step is!” / Countless feet with repeating stride, will course up and down, / The roughly 11 centimeter rise, and the 29 centimeter tread… / Of the common step. / It varies little, from country to country. / The feet of people don’t vary that much. / It’s unlikely that even an artisan, / Or an architect, will put finger to lips, pause at the flat surface and make note of it. / A step….is a step. Here, at Monserrate Palace, the step takes a slightly more elevated position, / Leading from balcony to garden, from path to patio, / From beauty…to loveliness. / I am sure you won’t be captured by the elegance of the steps of this palace either, / But you may of the intransigent flowers, which decorate it, / Quite by nature, not planted, not tended. / But they are pretty, and they do arise in spring. / And when they arise, and blossom, they decorate the worn, stone…steps. When you visit Monserrate, don’t leave a detail unturned with your mind. / Savor and ingest it, as you would the fine fresh seafood this hidden jewel of a country, offers.
