By Darren Stones Singing like a parrot whilst wearing a gold dress in the shower may be the road to super-stardom for zany RedBubble member, Jo O’Brien. DS. Is that your real hair colour? JO’B. Yes, it absolutely is. When I was in Year 9 (and I had coloured my hair to death), I shaved it all off No. 1 style and started to grow it all back. Since then, I have learned to leave my hair alone. DS. What shampoo do you use? JO’B. I get different shampoo all the time based on what is on special (oh the bargain hunter emerges!) At the moment it’s… um…. a purple bottle of some variety. DS. Does your bathroom have an IXL Tastic 3-In-1 light? JO’B. No. I jump out shivering in the cold air. I don’t even have a heater in my bathroom. It’s getting a bit desperate. DS. Do you wash the dishes in the shower? JO’B. I have occasionally washed my coffee cup in there when the kitchen sink looked like a five-armed monster. I was too scared of what I might find in there if I started moving dishes to make room. But not as a regular thing. I should probably start doing this as a water saving effort. DS. Are you a ‘Wally with water’, or do you shower in less than three minutes? JO’B. I’m generally good, but you may have noticed I have a hell of a lot of hair so occasionally I slip up. I do also have a tendency to have baths, because they are so relaxing and I’m a work-a-holic stress head. DS. Does your bathroom sink tap drip at a rate of one litre per hour? JO’B. Thankfully no, I turn it off nice and tight. Dripping taps drive me insane. DS. Does your bathroom window sill have 12 bottles of perfume on it? JO’B. I have two bottles of perfume, one inherited and one was a present. I love perfume, but it’s not the kind of thing I’d go out and buy myself. Actually, my window sill has nothing on it at the moment – I had a party here recently and therefore cleaned up. DS. Do you think this photograph will catapult you to national stardom? JO’B. I am certain it will. I’ve already doubled the locks on my house for when the media starts hounding me, and never leave the house without giant celebrity style sunglasses. I’m still working on losing 75% of my body weight though. DS. Are you a better singer than Australia’s singing budgie Kylie Minogue? JO’B. I go for more of a ‘parrot’ sound in my singing. Kylie does the ‘budgie’ thing. It’s really like comparing apples to oranges. We’re both good at our chosen style. DS. Do you watch Big Brother? JO’B. Yes. Now just pretend you didn’t hear that and move on.

Hi Bubblers…...it’s been a while since I wrote in my journal and things have been moving on. After months of seeing my Mum’s health get worse and worse and being scared that she suddenly seemed old and frail I was really worried about her. She is 71years old but has always been on the move, could never sit still and when I went round for my daily coffee she would have been up since the crack of dawn, out in the garden singing as she put washing on the line at about 6-00am and by the time I arrived at 8-00am would be on her 5-6 cup of tea…..... and from this I used to go and find her pale and withdrawn, sometimes crying, sat in her chair, still in her night clothes not having the will or interest to get dressed…...... I can tell you it really scared the hell out of me, thought she had given up on life…...and then a couple of weeks ago she went for a second opinion and he told her straight away what was wrong…..she was given blood transfusion, steroids and they fixed the burst blood vessels they found in her chest. Now it’s like the last 6 months never happened….. I went for coffee this morning and she had the radio on , singing along…all the words in the wrong place…... I smiled to myself and thought welcome back Mum, I love you. :)) XXX

** / I have taken a series of my own images and created a video, in combination with a song I just finished recording (as the musical backdrop). Please go to: Images By Sandra / if you care to view the compilation video…and here me sing…scary thought eh? The song is called “The Man With The Child In His Eyes”, (unusual title, I know) written by Kate Bush whom many of you may remember from the late 70’s with songs like Wuthering Heights & a popular duet with Peter Gabriel in the early 80’s called Don’t Give Up. Her style is quite theatrical, and although this is not my preferred choice in musical stylings (I’m a rocker at heart), she does fascinate me, and this particular song has long been a favourite of mine. If you have headphones, you’d be better served by hearing the music through them…(video length 2:44). I hope you enjoy it. On a side note, I tried very hard to find a way to embed my video directly into this journal but alas, how this is done is a RedBubble heavily guarded secret! If you know how to do this, please drop me a bubblemail – I am seriously exhausted trying to find the answer to this problem. Cheers, S% P.S.* The video is embedded into my internet radio website Beavertalk.com – feel free to surf around the site and send me your thoughts if you can spare the time!

This was actually just posted as the majority of a comment to a person who posted an image titled ‘Strange Fruit’. Then, it occurred to me that other people might also want to know this, if they don’t already, so, here you go. There is a song, Strange Fruit, by Billy Holiday, however she actually spelled her name. Well, I am not sure who wrote it, but she definitely sang it. Now, it is a very compelling, very important, worth while sort of song. So, I would never belittle it, but, all the same, I was rather afraid you had been inspired by it, and that was your way of jumping out of Vietnam or something. It’s a powerful song, and if you ever get a chance you should listen to it. But, not at a party, not when you are already depressed, and not when you are hoping for happiness. Preferably, unless you should just never do this, brace yourself with a few stiff drinks first. It’s that sort of song. It’s also the sort of song, wherein people will tell you that it makes everyone who really listens to it cry. The tendency of persons told this is disbelieve such statements, as people are always exaggerating. Well, believe the statements, as it is true. Even people who the song is rather more against than for, people who caused these sorts of problems, have been known to cry over the song. Some of them changed their way of life, after hearing it.

Why not, I say. You’ve seen my art, my writing, mood swings, naked body, might as well hear my voice singing. If you care (which I can only imagine a few of you will at this point) let me know which of the following you want me to sing and then link to from my RB page: A.) Who Am I (Les Miserables) / B.) Stars ( ”” ”” ”” ) / C.) Corner of the Sky (Pippin) / D.) Gethsemane (Jesus Christ SuperStar) I opt for D myself for real backfire, but if you want a less dramatic, more beautiful one, I’d say B. Anyway, if enough of you vote (say, 10) I’ll throw in either: “I Guess I’ll Miss the Man” (Pippin) or “Sweet Transvestite” + “Stageshow Pt.1” (Rocky Horror Picture Show)

I’m feeling very soulful and spiritual this evening and having seen and heard Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu performance on The Jewels Holland Show on BB1 a month ago I was so taken back by the spirit of this man and his talent to play guitar being blind. / He has performed in many high places and has performed before HRH Queen Elizabeth and many of you who live in Australia may already know him and heard his music. Grandpa’s Favorite Song It’s four in the morning and the house is quiet, even the dogs are asleep, I decided since I don’t want to start another piece of work this would be a good time to tell the story of George. / It was late fall in 1956 and the weather was turning cold. I was 13 and dad had passed away after a long illness the last February, so there was just mom and grandpa and I. My sisters and brother were married and lived in other states. It had been a sad year and we were not over the loss, then George came into our lives. / Here in rural Missouri we do have singing mouses. In late fall when it turns cold the field mice invade the houses looking for warmth. Thats how George came to our house. Only George was special. / The other character in the story was not Boo [aka Mr. Horrid], but his great, many generations back, great grand mother. Had the same imperial attitude as Boo, but had to be the fatest and laziest cat that ever lived. / One night great grand mother cat, Blue Bell, was laying infront of the coal parlar stove as always and Grandpa and I were watching TV. George came in, wasn’t a bit scared of us, ran across the room to the warmth of the stove. Blue Bell didn’t even move, I said she was lazy. George crawled up on her and sat up and stared chirping. Now thats what we in Missouri call a singing mouse. You don’t touch them, they bring good luck to your house. / Grandpa and I were having crackers for a TV snack. Grandpa quietly placed a piece by George. George picked it up and between nibbles continued to sing. When he was warm and full he left. / George showed up every night and entertained us with his singing. Mom even started coming in to watch him perform even though she hated mice. We were enjoying him so our sadness over the loss of dad was passing. This went on every night untill past Christmas, only by this time George wasn’t running across the floor to crawl up on Blue Bell. He was to fat, he could barely waddle across the floor. One night he didn’t come, I don’t know what happened to him. Grandpa said he either found a lady mouse or had gotten so fat he couldn’t get through his hole into the house. But George had served his purpose he had brought us joy. God is good.
