  • Most of us can remember a farm we used to love to visit or a farm we once called home. Whatever the case, this nostalgic scene brings back memories of simpler times and family ties. I talked to the elderly couple who built this barn. It’s over 50 years old, they told me; they built it themselves. Their house burned down and was rebuilt, but the old barn survived and still stands, a page in a memory book that will never be erased.

In my traditionally composed paintings of flowers and Greek icons, I express the peace, relaxation, and spirituality she connects with the act of painting. Although I renders oil-on-canvas floral subjects in hues reminiscent of the Renaissance tradition, I masterfully uses negative space and photographic angles to produce graphic images with a decidedly modern sensibility. My works appear starkly divided into two categories, but they are intrinsically linked by my personal symbolism influenced by my deep faith and personal story. Rather than painting to express the sorrows of my past, I paints to help the viewer escape the stresses of everyday life and retreat to a simpler time where forgotten values are embraced. www.marinella-art.ch

  • I find that when life slows down, I’m able to learn more from the world around me. I love the choice of the Amish to live life at a simpler, slower pace—something we could all benefit from.

  • Tire swing in oak tree.

  • My five year old grandson has been visiting from out of state, and we’ve been having the best time doing the simplest things—fishing, weeding the garden, baking cookies, washing dishes, taking long walks, looking for “treasures” in the yard, be it acorns or snails or feathers. It’s kind of nice sometimes to get away from the mechanized toys, the electronic games, and the inner space of computers and technology to basic pleasures like throwing sticks into a pond. I decided to make this collage and call it “Simpler Times” in celebration of the uncomplicated lifestyle that once was and can be discovered again, even in the midst of the noise and hubbub of the modern era.

  • TUTORIAL: Resizing Images for Print in Photoshop - The Simpler Way

For those of you with Photoshop, here’s a simple tutorial for resizing images for print in Photoshop. Much to my surprise, I discovered that Photoshop (CS2 is what I use) has a wizard for resizing images to print – something I had not seen before since I never ventured into the “Help” menu, which is where you’ll find it. This option is not available in CS3. I am currently printing my own images (up to 13” wide X 44” long) on an Epson R1900 and the prints I have resized using this wizard come out beautifully on that printer. I have not yet sent these off to a print-house to test them, so before you decide to sell anything sized this way, you’ll need to obtain a test-print from the printer of your choice. Download the tutorial in PDF format from here / The pdf contains screen prints of the steps, so it should be simple for anyone to follow. Since I use Photoshop CS2, I have no idea if this option is available in prior versions, or if it is available in Photoshop Elements. You’ll need to look in your programs to see. Please Note* Starting with the highest quality of image you’ve got will help result in the best quality of print.

  • A carefully restored ‘mom & pop’ service station in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. memories from my younger days when gasoline was less than thirty cents a gallon, was pumped by a smiling attendant who cleaned the windscreen, checked the tire pressures and oil and adjusted as needed at no extra cost… now we pay highly for the privilege of using big oil’s products and unfortunately are too slow to develop alternative energy sources.
