Two weeks and a few days to go until we’re hanging this beast! What you can see so far in this account are our “extra” images. These images are to complement those which will be in the real-life flesh and blood exhibition. For the moment we’ve kept the exhibit images private, but they will become public once the exhibition is open! A few words of explanation: “Unsensored07 is an exciting upcoming independent exhibition organised and run by a small group of photographic artists who practice and value work with film in this day of digital conveniences. The exhibition will feature 12 artists, all with a very distinct style and will take place between 26th October and 10th November at Kerala Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. What makes this show quite distinct is the fact that all works are on film / - considered a dying (if not dead) art form that carries a lot more spirit and tradition and has certain genuinity to it. More importantly, is what this means on a social / environmental / cultural parallel that is really important. Shooting film in an age where digital photography is readily available and is a lot faster, simpler, and more convenient represents the vinyl in the mp3 world, the live gig in the lap-top album culture, the bike ride to work amongst / other things and strongly comments on the ‘more of everything / less substance in anything’ contemporary reality, uniformity and loss of personal touch, consumer based everything and loss of true genuinity.”

I’m a member of a group of 12 Redbubblers called the Silverminers. So-called, because we are mad on film photography and the smell of silver halides in the morning. Over the last few months we’ve been slowly putting together a show, and it’s coming up soon. It’s being held at Kerala gallery, 283 High St Northcote. http://www.keralagallery.com.au/web_pages/coming_soon.htm The opening is on the 26th of October, at 6PM. A number of shots are up at the silverminers redbubble account: http://www.redbubble.com/people/silverminers These aren’t quite the images that will be in the show however, we’re keeping those under wraps until the show opens on the 26th. Anyway come along, and buy stuff! Our prints are going to be printed and on sale through RedBubble!

I am part of a group of photographers called the Silverminers who celebrate the use of film in a digital age. Recently, we have been busy shooting, talking, developing, discussing, organising, and agonising over our first exhibition to be held at Kerala gallery, 283 High St, Northcote, Melbourne, Australia. http://www.keralagallery.com.au/web_pages/coming_soon.htm The opening is on the 26th of October, at 6PM. As far as we know, this exhibition will be a first of it’s kind show where the images were taken on film, printed digitally, physically exhibited and available for purchase on-demand on-line via Redbubble. Well … I’m excited. Have a look at the talent in the group by visiting our redbubble profile here:- http://www.redbubble.com/people/silverminers The images to be exhibited do not appear yet … they are being kept under wraps until the opening night … so make sure you are there!

So, we are having this exhibition next Friday, and our printing is being done through RB. We picked up the prints that are going to hang in the gallery yesterday afternoon, and they look FABULOUS! First time I’ve seen a large framed print from RB, and they’re good! Very good. The frames look great, the mat is cut perfectly, the polycarbonate (or whatever kind of plastic it is) on the front is very nice (this is something I was a bit worried about, but not any more), and they even have a wire and hooks on the back, and felt pads to protect your walls. All very nice. We picked up 24 of these buggers, and they completely filled up the back of the car, scary stuff! (as an aside, the preview for “off-white” mat when you go to buy a print is a horrible Baileys-like creamy-beige, whereas in reality it’s very nice, don’t get put off!) So, that’s all good. The next stage is taking them to gallery, hanging them, then opening the show (PLEASE COME!) and sitting back while the dollars roll in. Ha ha yes… Anyway this is where the problem starts. Most of the artists in the show want to limit the edition to a certain number of prints. Ideally, we would even want to somehow sign either the mat of the back of the frame. This of course is impossible with the sales going through Red Bubble. The question is, do we embrace the print-on-demand, web2.x etc zeitgeist, and just make everything available to print in an unlimited way, and make this a feature rather than a bug, or do we come up with some arcane way of limiting the number of prints that are sold? If so, how on earth? I think the buying public are going to have trouble with option 1 to be honest. These are people who have come into a gallery to look at (and perhaps buy) some special item. To go up to the gallery assistant and be told to go home, log on to RB and enter a credit card number and wait for a package in the post is certainly going to be a challenging concept to a certain proportion of the public. It’s fine when things are displayed on a web site because the people looking in the first place are going to be reasonably internet savvy. This is both the strength and the curse of this exhibition, and we’re all struggling to find a way through! One option would be to maintain a register of interested buyers at the gallery during the course of the exhibition, and then organise payment and printing ourselves – ie get the cash, go to RB ourselves and get the work posted to ourselves, and then deliver/post on. I think this will probably be a reasonable option for most people, but it doesn’t exactly leverage the unique opportunity of using RB infrastructure (ie payment and postage) that we have. Anyone have any bright ideas? PS come and buy lots of our stuff, and see what whacky solution we come up with ;> Go on.

I am part of a group called the Melbourne Silver Mine. Some months ago, we set out to put together a totally film based exhibition! After shooting our little hearts out, stressing over shutter speeds/apertures and countless details. We are now at a stage where we are ready to rock and roll. Our first exhibition to be held at Kerala Gallery, 283 High St, Northcote, Melbourne, Australia. The exhibition will run from 26th Oct – 10th Nov. Opening night 26th Oct 6-8pm. We have set up a dedicated redbubble account, which is currently displaying our extra images, more so as a teaser. The final exhibition shots won’t be unveiled until opening night! http://www.redbubble.com/people/silverminers If your in Melbourne please come down and support us. :)

  • One more sleep to go – the countdown is almost over. Lots of blood sweat and tears have gone in to this exhibition and we would all love to see you there! Opening night tomorrow night from 6pm @ Kerala / 283 High Street, Northcote Coming from a diverse range of backgrounds, the Melbourne Silver Mine was formed online through flickr.com by a group of like minded photographers, all with a keen interest in film based photography. Some of us had migrated from digital to film, while others had never shot any other way. What started as a small subgroup sharing ideas on film developing, scanning, or the cameras themselves, soon became a hub of activity as we shared and discussed each other’s work, finding in film qualities which we did not see in the homogenous world of digital. Unsensored07 represents the diversity of films, cameras and styles each of the twelve contributors brings into the mix. With the shared philosophy that shooting film in a digital age represents the vinyl in the mp3 world, the live gig in the lap-top album culture, or the cycle to work in peak hour traffic, Unsensored07 presents twenty-four works, each selected to highlight those qualities which may soon be unjustly consigned to the dustbin of history. Melbourne Silver Mine presents / "Unsensored07" / Oct 26 – Nov 10 / Kerala Gallery / 283 High Street, Northcote
