This is one of a series of photos taken from thin sections of soil from around New South Wales and the North Island of New Zealand. I used them for my honours thesis at uni. This particular soil was taken from Young, New South Wales.

I love this image. It was taken at Bo’ness harbour which, at the time of writing, is no longer used due to it being silted up. The old buoy has obviously been deposited at various places by the tide forming the patterns seen. I believe plans are afoot to clean the harbour.

Top 8 in a Challenge in Lakes and Inland Waterways – November 16, 2009 / Featured in Mountains and Light – January 8, 2009 / Featured in Canada…The Great White North – September 2, 2008 Peyto Lake is a glacier fed lake in the Mistaya Valley, Banff-Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. / During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River. The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). On this day in September 2006, the sun created shadows across the water, from the clouds. Taken with Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. / 165 views as of November 16, 2009 / / Framed Print

Four trees get their feet wet in the Parksville Reservoir in Tennessee. The trees are growing on a sandbar created by silt dragged into the reservoir by the Ocoee river. The abstract patterns on the surface of the lake are reflections of mountain forests behind the trees. A family of trees keeping cool in the shallow water above a sandbar in the Parksville Reservoir. Ocoee Lake, TN. Olympus E-3, Sigma 50-500 mm f/4-6.4 telephoto, f/16, 1/20 sec, ISO 100, 500 mm / The Sigma lens is so long and heavy at 500 mm that I had to set a second tripod under the tip of the lens and use the 12 sec. shutter delay to get a crisp image of these bathing trees. / Copyright © Richard G. Consider also, that I took this colour photograph in evening light at almost 1100 at night in the rain. See camera data below. “The great Matanuska is a beautiful valley glacier twenty four miles long and four miles wide decending twelve thousand feet to the terminus. It is nestled in the breathtaking Chugach Mountains of Alaska. This glacier is a valley glacier; it exists on a valley floor. The majority of glaciers in Alaska today are smaller alpine glaciers which hang off mountain slopes. The Matanuska is an active glacier which advances at one foot per day. It takes approximately 250 years for the ice to form upglacier and advance to the terminus. The ice of an active glacier always moves forward due to gravity; like water in a river, the ice will flow downvalley. When ice melts at a higher rate than snow accumulates, the glacier margin ‘recedes’. (The term ‘receding’ does not refer to the ice actually travelling back up the valley.)
