  • Smoke Signals
    by thepalms

  • Taken from Signal Hill, this is a photo of Cabot Tower, in St. John’s Newfoundland. Cabot Tower was built in 1897 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s discovery of Newfoundland. / In addition to being the site of harbor defenses for St. John’s from the 18th century to the Second World War, Signal Hill was the reception point of the first transatlantic wireless signal by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901. He received the letter “S” in Morse Code sent from Cornwall, England. / Cabot Tower is now the center of the Signal Hill National Historic Park, Canada’s second largest historic park, with walking trails, and an interpretation center. Special Thanks to Colin Tobin for use of his camera and the lessons! In the buyer’s booth you can see what a printed card of this image looks like courtesy of Sharon Perrett. Thanks Sharon!

  • Cool picture. Literally … Winter 2007 / 2008: China had its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad has seen its first snow in all recorded history. North America had the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile — the list goes on and on. It’s cold outside, so lets light up the fireplace to stay warm and snuggly and watch some movies. Frozen road construction signal in Munich, Germany, / late December 2007 / / Laminated Print /

  • First Contact is imminent. A self portrait when I was about 7 years old and I had read that a beam of light travels forever in space until it hits something. So, with a knapsack for the flashlight and a jacket, my trusty Red Rocket Space Patrol lunchbox (with a peanut butter sandwich, you know, just in case) and my Morse Code emergency signal: 3 short blinks, 3 long blinks, and 3 short blinks, I sent for a starship to take me back where I belonged. Only seven, hadn’t even read any science fiction yet, signaled every night for a week, SO DISAPPOINTED. So now, more than half century later, I have to wonder… is it 3 short blinks, 3 long blinks, and 3 short blinks, or 3 long blinks, 3 short blinks, 3 long blinks… ? (First use of my homemade starry sky)

  • Composite artwork, all taken in Saigon, Vietnam / 4th PLACE Mood & Ambiance Group “Hams:)” Challenge

  • Two small boats at Deal in Kent seemingly sending out smoke signals to each other!...Anybody know what they’re saying?

  • Nelson’s Monument on the crest of Calton Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland, replaced an existing mast with a signal-tower high enough to be visible to ships on the Firth of Forth and commemorates Admiral Lord Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. it is shaped like a spy glass, and from the top (unlike Nelson himself, who saw no ships) you can see the ships on the River. The stone structure is 106 ft high with 143 steps from a base 456 ft above sea level. The really smart aspect of this tower is the time signal installed at its top in 1852 to enable ships’ captains to set their chronometers accurately. A large time-ball drops on weekdays, at 12pm in Winter and 1pm in Summer coinciding with the firing of Edinburgh Castle’s One o’Clock Gun. Information supplied by Wikipedia. Camera: Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi in the USA) BEST VIEWED LARGER Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. Related shots can be found at: Edinburgh.
