  • Saganasghee Slough in the forest preserves south of Chicago. This side of the slough has blessed me several times with nice vistas in the morning.

  • It is not how it looked in the viewfinder but it is how I wanted it to look in the end. The process of creating photographs is one with endless possibilities between the accurate recordings and significant transformations through camera settings and post processing steps. There is no "right" way to do all this and all options are available – at least for the open minded. So we choose the shutter speed, set the aperture, widen the angle or zoom in, highlight some elements, darken others, sharpen somethings, blur others, saturate and de-saturate, blend and hide,... all which change and transform the raw photo into something interesting for the eye – at times even visual art. Here I tried to create a piece of work that resembled the reality but also transcended into new visual dimensions which could not be seen by the human eye on location – merely in my mind. The long exposure and various post processing steps made this possible. The raw material was captured on Havskåren, a tiny island in the Oslofjord by the Nøtterøy archipelago. I posted this because I liked how the composition turned out. I also love the colors – muted yet warm and inviting. Earth colors. I hope you enjoy this work as much as I enjoyed creating it.

  • Taken on a private beach on the Lake of Two Mountains, in the village of Oka, Quebec Canada on Saturday November 29/08. / The sun was going down behind me at this spot and I looked towards the east and spied this solitary swing over the shore. Shot about 1/2 hour before sunset.

  • Sunrise on the Chicago skyline with Lake Michigan aglow. The 3 block rocks were covered with a coating of ice and along with the posts reminded me of Stonehenge. Worked in Layers by placing two widely different exposed images on top of each other and removing parts of one image to leave the deep colors of the sky and keep the highlighted icy block rocks. This done using Adobe Photoshop CS3.

  • On the second day we were in Punta Cana, a storm rolled in and eventually turned the horizon black. This was taken about an hour before but the warning of wind, rain and darkness were already present in the early afternoon. And bitter was the darkness that befell the bloomless rose. • Yup, that’s what it is…a sunset from the rocks on Schoodic peninsula in July…so wonderfully mellow there…possibly my favorite place. That’s Cadillac mountain in the distance (the main part of Acadia National Park). Schoodic is the ‘quiet’ part of Acadia, less frequented by noisy tourists… / This area is threatened by a proposed 3000+acre ‘eco resort’ for the rich to be located on and just off this peninsula…an Italian investor wants to build it…it would totally destroy the beauty and peacefulness of this wonderful place…the locals are mostly opposed to it, but in the ‘land of greed’, where there’s money to be made for those that already have too much, you can be sure it will eventually happen, sadly… ~ please view large ~ Schoodic peninsula, Acadia National Park, near Winter Harbor, Maine, US / 7/09 / Canon EOS T1i, 18-55 (18), auto landscape / thanks for the look, my friends! • The rain and clouds finally cleared, just in time to allow me to get out to the lake while the leaves are still showing their finest colors. This is the shoreline of Rose Valley Lake in Gamble Township, north central Pennsylvania. Rose Valley is 5 miles east of the community of Trout Run. When you visit a beautiful place like Rose Valley Lake, please leave it exactly as you found it! Your food wrappers and empty containers must go back home with you for proper disposal. I had to do some cleaning up to be able to capture this pristine shot. Let’s all do the right thing, OK. Everyone benefits when we keep our “green” places green! This photo was taken on October 10th, 2009. It was shot with a Canon EOS 10D using a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L zoom lens set to 90mm. The shutter speed was 1/45th sec. at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist.
