this is an imaginary bike shop with the window filled with all the graphics I’ve been doing as tee shirt placement prints. It’s a big canvas and i’ve also put lots of the little logo graphics everywhere as “brands” being sold in the shop. It’s being used as an add in magazines and as our webpage for Apres Velo. / I”ve tried to make it look sepia and old but with the new stuff in bright colours to contrast. As always the all important FW steaming in foreground which is what all us cyclists long for at the end of the ride, the legs to stop spinning and the lips start sipping.

Marrickville (in Sydney, Australia) was where I grew up as a child. It will always hold the softest fondness in my heart. / I love the cultural mix there, to me it is one of the most socially unique places in the whole world. A mix of old 1st generation migrant Greeks (who are now quite well off and comfortable, with huge families), young migrant Vietnamese who work very hard to support their families, (many can’t speak much English and there are a LOT of Vietnamese owned shops along Marrickville road), and theres the trickle of the Newtown arty types who simply cannot afford to live in Newtown anymore and wish to create Marrickville as second arty hot spot. / The lingual clashes between the old Greeks, and the young Vietnamese are common and quite amusing. Greeks know how to speak English, but are too patriotic to Greece to speak it. The Vietnamese struggle with English, and because there are so many other Vietnamese, they end up speaking their language. Neither of the Ethnic majorities really understand each other, and it causes some fairly interesting conversations. Especially in shops. This shot was taken when driving through my old suburb on Mother’s Day. An old man had set up his little shop, selling birds and tubs of honey from the boot of his car. / This is my first attempt at selective colouring on photoshop. I am quite proud of how it turned out. And may I say, the car was really that blue! Image copyright © 2008, Lila Alias. Copying and displaying or redistribution of this image without permission from the artist is strictly prohibited.

So I was sitting in the QVB the other day watching all of the people rushing about with loads and loads of shopping bags in their hands. Did they really need all of that stuff? How many pairs of shoes do you have to have before you are satisfied? When consuming becomes a recreational activity you know we’re in trouble.

This was taken from my friends home in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England. They have this beautiful antiques store just across the road from them. I wanted to capture the feeling of the village life along this road that their house is on. So many visitors to the village make their way down this lovely road and stop to photograph our friends home, so I find it a privilege to be able to shoot from inside. I love this image. This shot is ‘as is’ from the camera. No adjustments have been made. Taken with a HP PhotoSmart C945 bridge camera.

Cockatoo Island Machine Shop – Sydney, Australia, 16th May 2009. The HDR group had a meet-up on Cockatoo Island that coincided with a large group of artists also meeting there. The old abandoned machine shop with its rusty lathes and mills etc made for an interesting place to photograph. I spied this lady drawing an old lathe with the sun shining through the window, perfectly lighting up her drawing paper and asked if she’d be ok with a photo and she happily agreed. I decided to use HDR to bring out the detail in the old lathe and the time ravaged walls and brickwork, but also to show the amazing greenish glow of light that was coming through the tinted upper window panels. If anyone recognises the lady artist in the foreground, let me know as I’d like to send her a copy.
