how cool. My mum wants to learn PS. It’s going to have to be mostly distance-so I may as well share the tips! One-the goal Know your goal / Make a plan / Stick to the plan / If the plan doesn’t achieve the goal, make a new plan / Achieve the goal. Two-the goal Natural or nurture? Portraits Let’s pick natural first. Why do we like natural? It’s easy to relate to, we feel close to it, we’re familiar, we feel comfortable. If an image is ‘natural’, we accept it. Anything unnatural stand out. We jump on it. When using PS, less is usually more. Like film photography- Aim to get the best results in camera. That means good light, good subject and good angles. Because; What you see is what you get. What you see through the lens is what you end up with. Exception: the camera’s eye is not as good as our own. Light-It sees less when it gets dark, flashes drown out backgrounds and artificial light is, surprise! artificial (either yellow or green usually). example of different light (see dif angles/light-walking around the subject (Lara) in sunlight Exception-Depth of Field (DOF) this how much of the foreground/background is in focus. For portraits, its best to have just the face in focus. The background is distracting, unless it adds info about the subject being photographed. With an automatic camera, it depends on how much light. More light will mean more in focus. As it gets darker, the camera might not focus on anything, or it may too close to the subject. In PS, to get rid of distracting background, blur it. There is a blur tool. Remembering, less is best-use it subtly, and logically. Heavy handed blurring can detract. I suggest 50% to begin with. go look at portraits on the net and find ones that use varying DOF. Notice there are very few tips on PS here! That’s because the same thing can be achieved using the camera first, so get familar with the goals first! Then go on to lesson 2

Ok, so here’s the thing. I’ve been competing at a site called Digital Image Cafe for about 15 months now, and in the course of that time I’ve won a few prizes. I’ve got two boxes here with PC versions of Corel Paint Shop Pro PHOTO XI ....and can’t actually spare the space or ram on my computer to run it. Plus, my husband has this bad habit of throwing things out that are sitting around gathering dust….lucky I’m still here, actually! I’d hate for them to be wasted. Here’s what I propose: If anyone here wants to have one of these, I’ll give them both away…..post a photo here to prove how much you need it…..I’ll ask some of my friends to help me judge. The photos have to be loaded into Redbubble and for sale. To link it to here, go to the photo you want to share, right click on it, then go to properties. Drag your mouse over the url where it says Location, and make sure you get it all, including the ending extension, in most cases jpg, then add an exclamation mark at the start and the end ! / Paste that into the comment, and you should see your photo. Competition will end on Feb 29, 7pm Eastern STANDARD time – AUS, (not daylight saving time) and I’ll post them anywhere in the world, surface mail….no correspondence will be entered into, so don’t bmail me about this, put all your questions and photos here, please. I’m looking for creativity, but you also need to show that you don’t have a decent editing program….which is why you need this one. Feel free to tell all your friends

I was so very nervous…..but I did it and it was great. / Some of my framed images are now up on the walls of a very nice high end shop right in the middle of our downtown. / I brought the owner some examples and she loves them! / I thought I was going to faint. LOL! / Not only is she a shop owner but it turns out that she has a degree in photography and does her own darkroom work. How exciting! / I felt honored when she not only accepted some of my art for her shop but she had many nice things to say and was suprised that I haven’t gone to shool for photography. (yet) I plan to take some classes this spring. / I wanted to extend my thanks my fellow bubblers beacause if it weren’t for all your wonderful comments and encouragement I never would have taken this big step. / So….....THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. / Now just wish me luck that something sells in there! LOL!

I just wanted to share some really cool brush resources for those of you interested in adding some plugins to your Photoshop software. I have used some of them and they rock! All are freeware and some cite that you must give a link back to them in order to use them. The following is a comprehensive list of ALL of the websites where I have downloaded brushes from. Any of my pieces that feature a brush from one of these sets will be linked back to this journal for proper crediting. Brush gurus: 50ml Brushes Seishido Pixel Chick Damned in Black Dubtastic Juuichi Aquired-taste Photoshopsupport.com’s Brush Page I hope you all find these as useful as I have! If you need help installing these, check out my Photoshop Tip #1: Where to get brushes? journal entry. These are my pieces which use any of the above dingbats/fonts (will add as I create more):

Okay, so you’ve seen some amazing work online and wondered where the artist got all those astounding background effects or how they did that cool layered effect. Well, as surprising as it may sound, some of those effects were done using a very common Photoshop preset: Brushes. You may be asking yourself, don’t I already have brushes installed with my Photoshop CS3 (or CS2) software? Well, yes, you do. But those are the basics. There are a ton of awesome people out there in internet land who are making additional brushes (and other plugins) for you to use with your software. These plugins are very easy to download and install. I will try to give you a short rundown of what to expect when installing these brushes. For more information as to how to use them or for more detailed installation information or installation for a MAC OS, please consult the very wonderful Photoshopsupport.com, a very neat index of everything Photoshop! (Please note: The following instructions are very, very simplistic because I wanted even the novice Photoshop user to be able to use these tools. I know there are a bunch of different ways to do these things (even some that are easier), but I wanted to put it in basic terms without all the fancy language and extra steps because I remember how it was when I first started teaching myself to use the Adobe programs. Plus, this is not intended to be a full fledged tutorial.) The first step is to download some really cool brushes from an online provider. Some brush sets you will have to pay for, others are free with some restrictions, and others are completely free. Make sure you read the website’s policy before you use them. You can view my Photoshop CS3 (and CS2) Brushes journal entry to visit the websites where I have downloaded most of my brushes from. Most of them have free areas or are completely free and all you have to do is link back to them. Once you have chosen the brush set to download, simply download it to your computer. Because the files are normally saved in a Zip file, I start off by downloading the file to my Desktop first and then moving them over after (this is to avoid confusion). However, if you feel comfortable unzipping them right into the proper file, then by all means go-ahead-with-your-bad-self! After you have downloaded the Zip file to your Desktop, you will need a program (such as WinRAR, which is what I use) to unzip the file. At this point, you may be asking where you unzip the file to? Well, inside the Zip file may be a read me (.txt) file and other junk (which may be of interest to you) and there should also be a brush (.abr) file, which is the one you want to unzip. You can unzip the brush file onto your Desktop and then move it over manually, or you can unzip it to the Photoshop directory itself. Regardless of which method yo use, your ultimate goal is to get that .abr brush file into a specific folder in your Photoshop program’s file. For brushes, the file you will want to place your .abr brush files into is the “Brush” file within the “Presets” file. So, how do you get there? Open your My Computer and find the drive which has the folder “Program FIles”. Now, open “Program Files” and then find the folder labeled “Adobe”. Next, open the “Adobe” folder and you will see ALL of the Adobe programs, which are installed on your system. Locate the “Adobe Photoshop CS3” (or CS2) folder and open it. Find the “Presets” folder and open it. Finally, you will see a folder called “Brushes”. Open it. You can now see ALL of the brushes that are installed to use with your Photoshop program. This “Brushes” folder is where you want to place all of your downloaded .abr brush files. So, the quick breakdown to find the “Brushes” folder is: Program Files >>> Adobe >>> Adobe Photoshop CS3 (or CS2) >>> Presets >>> Brushes Once you have unzipped the files or drag-and-dropped them into this file folder, you can close the folders. You will also need to re-start your Photoshop program in order for the brushes to be finalized and installed and ready for use (sometimes, you have to re-start your computer as well). After you have re-booted your software, open a blank file and click on the “Brush Tool” or simply press its keyboard shortcut ( B ) to activate it. Now, right click anywhere on the page and your brush palette should appear (this is where you control the brush size/hardness, etc.) and in the upper right hand corner you should see a little black triangle with a circle around it. Click on that little triangle/circle icon and…. whaaaaa-la! Your newly installed brushes are there just waiting for you to experiment with them! All you have to do is click on a preset and it will ask you if you would like to load those brushes. Click “Ok” and they will appear in your brush palette waiting to be used and abused! So, go have fun with your new brushes and get creative! The last step, of course, is to add your comments below! Add your brush tips (pun intended) below so that we can all learn from each other! Cheers!

A few weeks ago (or maybe more..) i came to a point where i wanted to have small something (widget, feed, etc) that i can place on my main website (webgrrl.biz) and few other blogs that i have.. something that shows what’s been sold recently from all the places i have my art.. The only quick solution i could come up with (and with no cost) was to make a blog and post the info items, and taking the opportunity to Thank the buyer at the same time.. and so artSOLD was ‘born’ From there, i can then grab the rss feed and utilize it in many different ways.. my favourite being the widget at widgetbox : see here In a marketing and business sense, I’m not sure if this has been done before. We usually make a blog or websites to promote what art we make and whats for sale.. but making a blog/journal of what we’ve sold, i haven’t come across, and i have this belief that people like to know what people are buying, popular etc too.. So i thought, Why Not to have one for what’s sold!? Plus if/when buyer comes across the acknowledgment of thanks, thats a positive energy too…and im all about and for Spreading the Goodness! artSOLD took me a full day to set up, using a free blogger template i went lookin for.. Then i put thinkin caps on to see what ‘widget, promotional’ goodies there is available from all the three main places i associate with.. maybe you want to make one too.. :) Its a nice journal to have, and it makes you work just that bit harder (in promotions especially) so that you get sales, and that means a new post! :)

Does anyone here use Etsy? I’ve recently become interested…ok, obsessed….ok, addicted…to the site and trying to promote myself on there. there are relatively few photographers and I made a sale within a week and a half. I decided to sell my art printed on halide paper – a metallic/pearlescent look. So far I’ve concentrated my theme (with one exception) to my closeups of nature. For a while I intend to keep it that way – at least until I run out of that kind of art. So, if you like my work but don’t like being confined to the options on RB, or just want to buy straight from the artist (myself), check out my Etsy shop! If there’s an image here which I also sell on Etsy, I have a link on the RB image so you can get there straightaway. I’d also love to hear from anyone who has an Etsy shop – so I can HEART you. :) And if you have an Etsy shop, this is the place to promote yourself too!

If, like me you’re trying to improve all the time (not always succeeding :) ) and get some exposure and success sales-wise then you may want to check out the following sites for inspiration and also ways to direct people to your portfolio on RB: Competitions and other places to submit (some of which mentioned by various people in forums and journals) – in no particular order: Design by Humans – a well regarded ‘vote to print’ site – also has some good resources like ‘realistic’ templates to use for ‘model’ images. Tee invaders – A new competition site (haven’t checked it out yet) KingStrike – A slightly different concept – People buy the rights to your design for printing Teenormous – A great collection of shirts from around the web Threadless – No news here – everyone knows about Threadless. As I found it’s not easy to get into!! – lots of competition. It’s a community of sorts like RB, and You can add your own blog feed in your Threadless profile (so you can point it to your own blog, or your works on RB) – submission kit also has resources for ‘model’ images Shirt.w00t – another rolling competition with different challenges TeeFury – one a day – vote etc Teextile – This is brand new, and is another ‘one a day’ site. May be a good time to get something in there… Caponocca – Another competition site – $2500 for printed shirts 6 dollar shirts – Currently accepting submissions (2 colour designs) Mysoti – A fairly new POD (print on demand) site similar (in some ways) to RB, but without the community. Don’t know about the quality but the I’ve sold a couple there. Full Metal Shirt – Another competition site… Uneetee – Another US-based vote and print site Emptees – An aggregator, community and blog for your own and other’s designs Rumplo – another aggregator of other people’s designs. Unfortunately they don’t accept design suggestions from RB, but if you do a little digging you might find a way… StumbleUpon – Social bookmarking – Add your bubblesite, your blog etc – some people have reported success from this. Feedburner – Syndicate and publicise your ‘feeds’. This could be your blog, your works on RB, or pretty much anything. Feedburner allows you to get stats on the feeds, publish them elsewhere, and also create all sorts of widgets for subscribing etc. I’ve started putting the ‘stay in touch’ section in my posts to see how it goes… (might post more detail on this as it’s a bit more technical) I love your t-shirt – a sort of blog but also a place to submit designs to get seen A better tomorrow – a German design competition site Spring Leap – Another competition site (haven’t really looked yet) ModernTee – Another competition site ($250 per design) oh yeah – Zazzle and Cafepress if you want to sell mouse mats ;) FFFFound – Image bookmarking blogs that you may want to look at to find the sites yourself Competeetion – This is a great place to find out about other sites and competitions going on around the web. Hide your arms – A pretty good T blog – with the most useful post about basically every other T shirt blog. (that saves me writing the rest out under here!) TCritic – Another blog – not very frequent Fashionably geek – Clothing and accessories for the ‘well-dressed geek’ The Fresh Stock – Street wear and art TeeBurb – Tee designer community, blog – integrates with Twitter Teecraze – Nice simple syndication blog RB Tee Designers Sites / Blogs Redbubble home pages – find the historical home pages here Grandia Design – Clothing and interviews with fellow RB’ers (including ME) from the excellent Grandia Design Redbubble Twitter Twibe Bubbling under the surface – Unofficial RB Blog Diesel Laws – The mightly Diesel, now with a new full stop. Damien Mason – Web Design, Illustration, Animation and Monkeys WebGrrl – Not just T-Shirts… mtths – Such cool stuff – with success on Threadless too! JemimaLovesBigTed – JLBT on Tumblr Cathie Tranent – Cathie T on Tumblr Paul McClintock – Pauk on Tumblr Other Resources Free images – Places to find images on the web – useful for that inspiration or starting point for a design. How to find images – Another good wrap up of places to source images Typographic Posters – This is a great resource for all sorts of inspiration Smashing Magazine – A fantastic resource for design, print and web. Subscribe and get inspired on a very regular basis TypeNow – Free Fonts from A-Z. Lots of stuff for your ‘parody’ Tees :) FontSpace – 1000+ free fonts Anyone know of any more that would be of interest to RB T designers? – reply in the comments. I’ll keep adding to this when I find more… Stay in touch / / Subscribe to T-Shirt Updates / Subscribe to my T-Shirt blog | visit the blog

This article appears courtesy of FineArtViews.com by Clint Watson, a free email newsletter about art, marketing, inspiration and fine living for artists, collectors and galleries (and anyone else who loves art) . / A Hard Lesson Learned / by Gayle Faucette Wibson A few years ago, I had the opportunity to sign a consignment agreement with a local frame shop here in Albuquerque. This shop had a beautiful frame that complemented my acrylic paintings on canvas. The owners, a husband and wife team, offered to frame my work at their cost while taking a 50% commission. We had a positive working relationship for the two years I had worked with them. Then, suddenly, the couple separated and the wife was forced to sell the frame shop. We met to discuss my options. Either I could take the paintings out of the shop that day, or I could leave them and sign a new agreement with the new owner. She said that if I decided to take them, that I could keep the frames that were already on them. The new owner was a professional with a large well-known company. He bought the shop for his daughter to operate as her own business. Because my previous relationship with this shop had been positive, I decided to keep my work there. The owner told me she would be in the shop for a couple of weeks, training the new owner and his daughter. She planned on calling me during that time to introduce me to the new owner and sign a new consignment agreement. Being preoccupied with other things at that time, I sort of put it out of my mind and waited for her call. A few weeks later, I did receive a call. The new owner and the previous owner had a huge argument over the sale of the shop, and he had kicked her out. She advised me to take my paintings out of the shop because he was proving to be untrustworthy. So then I called the new owner and introduced myself. I could tell that he was not an easy person to deal with. He did acknowledge that I had a consignment agreement with the previous owner, but he became angry when I told him that the she had given me the frames. After a couple of telephone conversations, he claimed that he had bought all my paintings as part of the shop inventory. I knew the previous owner would never have sold my work. This new owner was extremely rude to me on the phone. I had never even met this man and he was threatening me! I contacted an attorney for advice and was instructed to write the shop owner a letter, giving him ten days to return my paintings. I did and he never responded. So, I proceeded with a small claims lawsuit against him. The previous owner provided me with all the documentation, proving beyond a doubt that my work was not part of this sale. She also put into writing, the fact that she had given me the frames as a thank you for our past successful relationship. In the meantime, the two parties were involved in some kind of legal dispute about the sale of this shop, which had nothing to do with me. When I appeared in court, the judge would not even look at my documents, because he did not have the details of this other pending case. So, I waited it out for a year and a half, while these two parties battled it out in court. I visited the courthouse a few times and made copies of documents to prove that my paintings should not have been involved in this dispute. Finally, I discovered through one of the attorneys involved, that the matter had been settled. I was about to refile my case, when a co-worker asked me if I knew that the frame shop had closed. She said it was open and operating one day and the next, it was completely empty! No sign on the door – nothing. / / This man had stolen my paintings, and I had to come to the realization that I will never get them back. If I had to do it over again, I would have taken my paintings out of the shop when it sold. At the very least, I should have been in that shop on the first day that the new owner took over, introducing myself and signing the proper documents. / / So, I hope others will learn from my hard lesson. Sometimes, I get so excited about the prospect of sales or exposure that I forget to treat this like a business. I hope my story will help someone else realize that we, as artists, need to treat our profession just like any other business: making sure everything is in writing, being assertive, and not relying on the words or opinions of others. This story can also be applied to anywhere you display your art, galleries, book stores, restaurants and the like..make sure you have very well written contracts, vetted by a lawyer with witnesses signatures, to cover bankrutcy, fires etc, as well... Janis

Another email I just had to share :D I took my dad to the mall the other day to buy some new shoes (he is84). / We decided to grab a bite to eat at the food court. / I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. / The teenager had spiked hair in all different colours: green, red, orange and blue. / My dad kept staring at him. / The teenager would look and find him staring every time. When the teenager had enough, he sarcastically asked: ‘What’s the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?’ Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response; knowing he would have a good one. / And in classic style he did not bat an eyelid in his response: ‘Got stoned once and fucked a peacock. I was just wondering if you were my son.’

I am absolutely delighted to share with you the arrival of an online purchase I made several weeks ago. / I don’t know if you know or not – but recently RedBubble partnered with blurb, the creative online book publishers to offer a new service to all RedBubble members: publish your own photography/art books and sell them online! It was also at about that time that Mel Brackstone was capturing the dreamiest of images of Miss Bertie Page – doing what she does best – using a handmade loupy lens thanks to Matt Penfold. “Hmmm…”, me thought, “…wouldn’t it be great if I had a book where every page was a loupy lens photograph of Miss Bertie Page as photographed by Mel?” Luckily with the magic of perfect timing and the internet I’m now the proud owner of a “Presenting Miss Bertie Page by Mel Brackstone” Let me say the ordering process is straight forward, with emails sent to confirm your purchase as well as a confirmation email sent when the book is actually shipped. / / I could not find fault with the sturdy packaging, and the book arrived in perfect condition. / / The pages have a beautiful satin feel to them and are a good weight while the colour rendition is comparable to the images on Mel’s site. / With Christmas only a few short weeks away, why don’t you consider making your very own blurb photographic art book? Or you might like to purchase one created by another artist, like I did. They’re a wonderful gift idea, and really, you can’t beat online shopping! If you’ve created a blurb book, add your link here for all of us to view and admire.

A simple tutorial on how to remove a background from an image placed into Photoshop. There may be an easier way I don’t know. I nutted this out this afternoon. 1.Open Photoshop and set up your T-Shirt template to look like this. Make sure it’s set to transparent background. / 2. Select File>Place>choose the image you want to put into the template. / 3. A box will appear, like this one below, click okay. / 4. Your image will appear. Double click on the image to embed it. Select the magic wand tool and click on green background (your background-hopefully you have a one colour background). Marching ants should appear (doesn’t show here) around the image and canvas. / 5. Select the erase background tool in the tool bar. The marching ants are there to protect your image from accidently being erased. / 6. Start clicking around your image to remove background. You’ll have to zoom in and out to pick up any tiny bits that may be missed. To make your eraser brush smaller use the [ on your keyboard. To make it larger click the ] . / 7. Hopefully you’ll end up with something like this. If so save as a png file and it’s ready to upload to RB as a T-Shirt image!!! /
