Lakes entrance is a fishing port and tourist town located on the Southeastern coast of Victoria, Australia. It is near a natual channel which connects the Gippsland Lakes to Bass Straight. The town has been a popular holiday destination for generations of Victorians, yet has managed to retain its smalltown rural charm. Surfing on the nearby Ninety Mile Beach is a popular attraction, as is fishing from the many piers and bridges in the area. Family entertainment such as minigolf and the popular Shell Museum cater to all ages. This sunset was truly one of the most magnificent I’ve ever seen. Everyone in the town stopped to watch the spectacle and I shot many dozens of photos, trying to capture the glorious warm golden light that flooded the river. This is also my most successful attempt at a High Dynamic Range photo. I took three exposures at different settings to try and capture a broader range of detail in the highlights and shadows, and manually merged them together in photoshop.

/ Calypso’s Quest by Karin Taylor / from the Beach Stuff Series / this is mixed media collaged piece / i have used acrylics and guache, watercolours, cut out paper / to form the sails and the hull This song is about the ship Calypso, which was bought by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and converted to an oceanographic ship. Cousteau wanted to understand “The silent world” better, in order to protect it. “To live on the land we must learn from the sea” – Cousteau was the first to do research on pollution and its effects on the sea and received many honors for his accomplishments. John Denver cared deeply about nature and this song was a tribute to both Calypso and her captain and their valuable work. I liked the very hard pen ink lines of the foreground, contrasting with the soft, misty, wet-in-wet background. 90 lb watercolour, medium rough paper. / 12”x8”

This is a shot of a cargo vessel heading out from the mouth of the River Shannon across Ballybunion Bay in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. The shot was taken with a telephoto lens from Knockanore Mountain (really a large hill) some two miles from shore as the préachán flies. / /

This was taken in Key West off the marina watching the sunset. It was just gorgeous with boats in the water and cameras clicking away. It’s a great place for taking pictures of quaint buildings and cruise ships docked for the day. The Sun Princess as she approaches Newcastle Harbour just on dawn on Sunday 18th October 2009. The threatening skies added a great backdrop to the ship as it slowly approaches the breakwall at Nobbys Beach. Because of the time of arrival the Fort Scratchley guns were not fired on this occasion however a three gun (cannon) salute was given on its departure. Most people entering the Port of Newcastle by ship are welcomed or farewelled in this unique way and it is fast becoming a unique signature for Newcastle.
