Ten lives were lost on a cold August night when the 46.7 metre, 640 ton Birchgrove Park sank off Avalon on Sydney’s northern beaches in August 1956. Built in 1930, the Birchgrove Park served not only as a collier but made a significant contribution to during World War. The vessel operated variously as an auxilliary minesweeper, stores carrier and personnel carrier. Initially operating between Sydney and Brisbane, from 1943 to 1946 the Birchgrove Park served throughout the waters of New Guinea. Leaving Newcastle in calm seas, the aging steamer soon ran into a strong southerly. Water surging over the decks forced its way into the hold causing the ship to list over to port. The problem increased until the steamer rolled over at about 2.45am, tipping the crew into the cold sea. Search efforts continued throughout the night and the next morning but only four were saved. The SS Birchgrove Park now lies in 52m of water.

“I want to eat your soul … all of you … I will eat all of your souls! Don’t think you’re safe just because I’m beached, and it’s daytime, those things don’t matter, they are just myths … I’m coming to get you!” Using finepix options (which are not extensive) I’ve tampered with brightness, contrast, saturation to alleviate some shadows that were hiding detail, to fade out a distracting background, and really bring out that fantastic green slime growth!
Photo of the wreck of an old wooden sailing ship. This shot was taken at Cardigan West Wales UK, July 2009. The tide has obviously been in and out a few times on this old lady but I bet she has been a silent witness to a great many things.
