  • In every shrine and temple around Japan visitors write down their hopes and dreams and pray for them to come true… Each temple has its own unique system and here the wooden boards are piled high with hope! I love this series of shots (see Dolls and Desires and Hopes for the Year of the Ox ) for the very reason that they’re so anonymous yet so personal. The boards hold the dreams of real individuals and families and it gives me pleasure to think that their dreams are coming true as you read this… I can only hope so…

This is a link to a photo gallery of my trip to Japan where I was traveling in a cultural exchange trip with members of my First Nations Tribe T’Sou-ke. The cultural exchange between T’Sou-ke and the Japanese people had a focus on the spirituality of the two different cultures with T’Sou-ke’s spiritual leader and healer Shirley Alphonse and the head Shinto priest of Tanashi Jinja, Wataru Kaya would meet to exchange and witness each others spiritual ceremonies. In this trip we went to the University of Tokyo, camping in the hills, visited various Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. We also went to both Buddhist and Shinto ceremonies as well as Shirley performing First Nation’s smudge ceremonies at several places. My role on this journey was to capture all of this with my camera.
