A dedication to a heart of what was greater than a beating breath / of mystery and synergy in line with those such greatness / a tired little moment in a grueling age of sub-standard care / for those who braved the mockery to pride in utter nakedness So when a “this book was written for you” falls on knees or shies / and reaching out can only grab the misty hand of mine and thiers / tears fall on a rusting roof, dripping to the half rusted earth / for all the ones who ran away and all the ones with none left for repairs But on the clouds, like sainted chariot of something more momentous / a wish to gods lost long ago and the folk who held them in death / so life will spring to bound ahead and redefine our simple quest / We can let the grip a bit go, sigh our hearts to peaces which never left.

It’s been cold 28 degrees, for Fresno, that is pretty cold. Fresno, I have such an intimate relationship with my city. It’s not a city like Paris or London, but Fresno has its corners and intersections, and personal memories for me. I have lived here my whole life, haven’t really travelled extensively, so Fresno is pretty much it for me. I have loved here, had my child here, raised her here, went to school here, cried here, got my heart broken here, contemplated here, prayed here, praised here, communed with God in the sanctuary of my two bedroom apartment. / I’ve seen K-marts close, remember where they used to be, and the places of my childhood, the ghosts that resided there, I remember the offices of my professors I used to chat up a storm with in my 20’s and 30’s. Where I used to buy my diet pepsis from, walking in the cold, and in the heat, with a young child in the stroller I pushed around everywhere. The places I worked at, the IRS, Bank of America, and Pacific Bell. I remember the places I went to meet men that had no use for me, the precise feelings that shattered me into pieces back then. I recall the rememberances of the places I once lived, the little girl that played in front of my parent’s house. The palm tree in front of the house, the huge numbers 1422 painted across the front of the house, the brown shutters, the basketball hoop, the drive-way with the brown impala and the willow tree that stood between our house and the neighbor’s. All of the apartments I aged in. The junior highs and high school, and the places I traversed to get there. The scents of Clovis Ave. near the winery, the smell of wine. All of the many intersections where I crossed the street to catch the respective bus numbers where they twisted and turned to get to their respective destinations. Buses 22, 38, 20, 41. The bus drivers that aged with me. The different fast food places I took my daughter to, Fosters Freeze on the corner of Shields and Cedar. The places where I worshipped, all the different places I went to find God in, but found something quite different. / Fresno, a world in a world, not quite Los Angelos, not northeren enough to be San Franciso. Over 100 hot in the late spring and 107 in the summers. Foggy in the autumns and winters. / I’ve had my intimate moments with my street corners, seen people beg for money, the homeless people, with those haunted looks of desperation. The cars that pass right by them, without blinking an eye. I know the cement here, I have felt the pulse of our city, our war protestors on the corners of Shaw and Blackstone Ave. / There are forgotten places down town, the JC Pennys that closed there, the Gemco that is now Target on Shields, the Arrow Pharmacy that to a newcomer never existed on Kings Canyon Road. But I remember reading my Archie Comics there. I remember buying chocolate clusters on the first floor of Penny’s. I recall my father paying a $1.00 to go into Gemco. The Winchell Donuts that closed, The Montgomary Wards, now Target, the Zodys, the Festival theatre and UA Movies 4 all made way and died for bigger theatres. 6 wasn’t enough screens, now we have 24 at River Park. / We didn’t have cell phones or personal computers or I-Pods, but I walked to public telephones then, and heard my walkman in those days. Now, you can’t find a public phone for your life here, and if one is fortunate enough, they never work or cost 75 cents. / I love the quietness, the familiarity like the back of my hand, the world of my youth and middle age. It’s etched inside me, I don’t know Paris or Berlin, except for film. This is the stone henge and my Eiffel Tower, the places inside my heart, that bled beautifully. / We all live and die someplace. I suppose I will live out the rest of my existence here. copyright2009misfit1965
