  • Two Sheepdog puppies with red leash in background.

  • Group of Sheepdog puppies on white seat.

  • I was playing around with taking pictures of my sheltie in the morning light. I personally like this one. the way the light shines up one side of the face to reveal the details and colors of his fur, while at the same time lighting a good portion of his white mane. I think this showcases the distinct frontal features of this breed well. I hope you like this as much as I do. /

  • Sheltie is short for Shetland Sheepdog, a herding breed that originates from the Shetland Islands off the northern tip of Scotland. / “What a cute miniature Collie!” “Look at the little Lassie!” “Is that a toy Collie?” / Every owner of a Shetland Sheepdog has heard and responded to countless comments such as these, but although Shelties bear a striking resemblance to Collies, they are a totally separate breed with differences in structure and temperament. And they are not a toy. The standard for Shelties states that they should measure between 13” and 16” at the shoulder. Most fall into the upper half of this range. The old guy in this photograph is our own Sheltie. His name in Strolchi, a German name which means “Little Tramp”. He was the smallest among his siblings and is one of the more rare Shelties which measure only 13” at the shoulder. We got him almost 14 years ago when he was 10 weeks old. Strolchi was not bred in a puppy mill but by an experienced, knowledgeable, European Shetland Sheepdog breeder, so his loyal, alert, enthusiastic, and charming personality is undisturbed. His luxurious coat as well as his sweet expression are only a few of his hallmarks, but we never bugged him with coaxing his ears into the correct carriage. He, as all Shelties, is happiest when the whole family is together in one room, enjoying each other’s company. In the Sheltie’s mind, the family is its flock, and a family spread throughout the house can lead to a very restless, pacing Sheltie. He lives to please and spreads his love, and when he turns on the sheltie cuteness it is impossible to resist him. / We love him with all our heart. • Sheltie’s love sheep. So when they are not herding them, perhaps they are dreaming of them… Original SOLD :)

  • Border Collies are these fantastic black and white dogs from Scotland which are known for their keen intelligence and their incredible herding instinct. It’s no wonder that a Border Collie has the energy output of a miniature nuclear reactor. Border Collies have been bred to herd sheep and that requires a lot of physical stamina and endurance. Herding sheep is an all-day activity and often entails miles of endless running and sprinting across uneven patches of farmland. / But obviously, not every owner of a Border Collie has the luxury of owning sheep, so another outlet must be found for this energy. Living with a young Border Collie is like living with a highly intelligent toddler. It requires dedicated time and effort to survive the experience! Intelligence in dogs is a double-edged sword. Yes, a Border Collie can learn lots of tricks and can have quite a large vocabulary but he also can learn a lot of bad things. Having such a smart dog means waging a continual intellectual war with your dog, trying to outsmart it as it figures out each progressive intellectual step you take. Trying to confine a Border Collie can be an exercise in futility. Just when you put in a gate, they figure out how to get over (under) it. When you put in a door, they figure out how to push it open. You put in a latch and they figure out how to turn doorknobs. Some Border Collie owners swear that their BC can pick combination locks – though their paws make it hard to turn the dial. If you do not enjoy engaging in intellectual warfare, especially with a non-human, a less “perceptive” and somewhat “denser” breed may be in order. Very few people can provide what the smart, high-voltage Border Collie really needs to be satisfied and well-behaved, but those who can find a most loyal 24/7 buddy. Once a BC owns you you’ve got no chance of escaping and I wouldn’t know why anyone would want to. Set of Two / Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) / (from the Herding Dogs Collection) / This also makes a great Come Back Soon card (sorry, I did not count how often this Border Collie photograph was featured, but it was featured at least once as can be seen in the Comments section)

  • The Shetland Sheepdog, often known as the Sheltie, has been intentionally bred small. Shelties are ideally suited for the terrain of the Shetland Islands in Scotland. While they resemble a rough Collie in miniature, they are not a true miniature Collie, as there are many differences in appearance. The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog and is intensely loyal. It is lively, intelligent, trainable, and willing to please and obey. Shelties are loving, loyal, and affectionate with their family, but are naturally aloof with strangers; for this reason Shelties must be socialized. Some can be quite reserved. Shelties do well with children if they are raised with them from an early age; however, their small size makes it easy for a child to accidentally injure them, so supervision is necessary. Exercise caution when considering an adult Sheltie for a family with young children; they may not be compatible. Shelties are vocal herding dogs. The average Sheltie is an excellent watch dog, giving alarm barks when a person is at the door, or a car is in the driveway.. painted in Corel painter using wacom tablet. Photo used for reference . • This is another addition to my Custom Pet Portrait Series… Shelbi belonged to fellow RB’er Kristina K. and I asked if I might draw this portrait mostly to help preserve the memory of this beloved companion that traveled over the Rainbow Bridge…the other part was a thank you for all of the calendars and cards Kristina has purchased from my collection. An original Pastel, Prismacolor Pencil, Pen and Ink drawing. Drawn on card stock, bonded, acid free, low tooth artist drawing paper. I use a bonded paper with low or no tooth for the smooth blending abilities and so the pastels are not chewed up during the drawing process. Thank your for viewing my art. • My little sheltie watching the lovebirds next to her in fascination – never any harm intended towards them, just curiousity. The strange thing is they come right up to the edge of the bars to talk to her, I go near and they move away! Featured in Cats & Dogs 17.02.09
