As you might remember, for my birthday James gave me a trip to Tasmania, which makes me totally and utterly spoiled rotten. (and very happy, tee hee) So how does one have a Tasmanian Holiday? / Start by getting on the Spirit Of Tasmania. There was this crazy guy doing all the announcements and he kept giggling and then trailing off at the end of each one…. strange. / Have a “Final Destination Moment” on the way from the ship. If you don’t get that, you’re not cool enough. / Prepare for self portraits by testing all the furniture for it’s climbability… result? Low climbability options, proceed with care and a cup of tea. / Visit some cows, lots of cows. Black cows, spotty cows, even cows with flies on their ears. / Learn how to do landscape photography without even looking at what you are doing. James calls this “Landscape photography 101.” I call it silly. / Take embarrassing tourist photos of unwashed hair in front of a vaguely attractive looking landscape from a lookout that takes ages to get to and isn’t worth the effort. / Visit sheep… / Many sheep… It’s at about this point that I should confess that the highlight of my trip to Tasmania was sheep. I love sheep, and wool, and it was so sheepy and so woolly. ah, love the sheep…. baaaaaaa! / Stay in dodgy accommodation (not that it matters, we were sleepy by this point) / Have many many toilet stops. So James can take many embarrassing photos of said stops. / Eat awesome food and take Hien-style photos of the food while telling James he has to wait until I get a good shot. He was hungry. Sorry hon. / Take photos under fences of grass and pretty trees and stuff that I never take photos of. / Drive up and down nine mile beach until Jo chucks a tantrum and makes James go back to the first look out we saw and then insist it was another one and then realise she is wrong and chucks another tantrum. / Have RedBubble meet ups with the Tasmanian Locals. Of course in Tasmania, five minutes down the road is a ‘long distance’ so they might not consider themselves as local as we did. “Are you local?” (If you get that joke, I love you and you are a huge geek) / Stop several times and stay on the alert for “the tree” for many hours before James can swerve off the road to take a photo with power lines in it. / Find crazy camping grounds where they are obviously killing all their naughty visitors and warning off other naughty people by hanging their victims’ shoes out the front. / Be majorly big tourists and carry heavy cameras around busy markets and buy nice photography books which have nothing to do with Tasmania as souvenirs / What was that? Jo is into sheep and wool? Yes I actually dragged him into the wool centre so that I could touch and feel all the different types of wool and re-educate myself on the production process from sheep to suit. Um…. / Say hi to Rambo / James says that this was his ‘careful planning of schedules.’ I say it is technology dependency. / Have an unplanned and surprisingly good last stop to kill time before getting back on the ship. The guy who owned the place was going around offering to take people’s photos which we saw right through- he just wanted to play with people’s cameras. / This has nothing to do with Tasmania… James made me add it

Hi! Was delighted to find out that “Lofty Ideals” received the “Today’s Best Award” , thanks to Zazzle :D And yes, I do draw other animals other than just the owls :D Many of you may not have seen this work as this was one of the first few that I uploaded here in RB. So I thought this is a good opportunity for the rest of you to know her better….a piece that’s close to my heart and maybe you can also identify with this painting. This pink sheep’s name is Knitto Pinko :D In this pic, she feels that she is unique and set apart for bigger things, not just another sheep under the shepherd’s shears….not just another digit on the farm….she faced a big dilemma…should she stay or should she leave? / You can view more of “Lofty Ideals” at my Zazzle Gallery. Part 2 of the story: Knitto Pinko submitted her resignation as head knitter to Farmer O’MacDonald a year ago. She decided that she no longer wanted to knit designs that she was in the least passionate about. Her dream was to have her own shop of knitwear, designed by her with 100% wool.Knowing her dream extended beyond the boundaries of this farm which she had grown so familiar with, she took on the challenges that awaited her outside nevertheless. There was no turning back since. She’s now busy with her knit creations which she fondly calls them “Knitties Gritties”. Hope you like the story :D

It started a little after 4 a.m. so that I could get to Summit Lake for the sunrise and magic light. I thought the place was my own little playground until I ran into a couple of climbers who got an earlier start than me. As it turns out, I arrived a little late, but fortunately the sun was blocked by a cloud layer until I got set up. I almost felt like the world was put temporarily on hold until I got the remote release connected, and then, BAM!!, the sun broke through and bathed the rock face and lake with golden light. I couldn’t find the ND grad, but it was a small price to pay for magic. The light lasted only a few minutes, but in that brief time the light was glorious. As I continued uphill, I ran in to a pair of marmots snuggling with each other – almost like they were kissing & nuzzling (I felt a little guilty about watching and even photographing them – it was very sweet in an anthropomorphic kind of way). Next was a small group of female & baby bighorn sheep. I stopped to take a few hand held shots until one of the females made it clear she didn’t like me hanging around so close to the babies. I can take a hint, and backed off pretty quickly, but she pursued and even circled me – climbing up the face of a steep section in the process – before she backed off. This is the same bighorn in the LOCKING HORNS photo. She was a little irritable today. Close to the summit I ran into the same herd of bighorns along with my usual group of mountain goats. It’s a treat to watch both species together. The set of new mountain goat twins trotted over to chase away a yearling bighorn twice their size, and then trotted back to mom’s side. As they were walking by, the larger of the twins ran up to within a few feet of me and let out a bleat. This was the same kid who did the same thing a few weeks ago (and whose picture is also in my portfolio). I haven’t seen him do that with anyone else – I wonder if he recognizes me? I do spend plenty of time around them. He stayed close to me for a minute or so until mom came trotting up and retrieved him. Too close to take a picture. That’s one of the reasons I like wildlife photography over landscapes. I enjoy the connection. Once you spend some time with them you recognize individuals and get to know each one’s personality – and they do have unique personalities! Instead of hanging around at altitude longer, I decided this had been a productive enough day and headed home. The morning passed all too quickly, but the satisfaction lasts. I still have a big dopey grin on my face as I write this.

This photo of Knitto Pinko is a continuation of the Lofty Ideals painting in my udonchow gallery here in RedBubble :D Knitto Pinko has been on her own for a year already and is starting her 100% wool knitwear shop called Knitty Gritties. In Lofty Ideals, Knitto Pinko was still stuck with the dilemma of whether to stay or to resign from her work at the farm as one of Farmer O’MacDOnald’s sheep. Her ideals were certainly taller and bigger than the farm….yet she too had times thought of how dangerous life would be out there, wolves and other predators alike…and if she’s ever going to survive in the world outside the farm with all the major adjustments she had to cope with, emotionally and financially. At O’MacDonald’s, she need not fret over financial and security issues. Then again, what good is security when one’s passion for life has been compromised time and time again? What good is security when you know you are fashioned for bigger things rather than just mere conformity? “To be dragged in the wake of the passive flock and to pass a hundred and one times beneath the shears of the shepherd, or to die alone like a brave eagle on a rocky rage of a mountain. That is the dilemma.” – Praxedis Guerero The above quotation, I think, aptly communicates the essence of Lofty Ideals. Let’s wish Knitto Pinko all the best as she continues to leave her unique mark in this world! :D Knitto Pinko (2) Lofty Ideals

Today Freddie excelled himself, and stepped up to the job. A small mob of about 40 young sheep, last years lambs, had found their way into the horse’s night paddock, and needed to be moved back to their own adjacent paddock. All last week Freddie had watched from his yard, while the sheepdogs did their work moving different mobs of sheep into the shearing shed next door. Well, his observations were not wasted. When he had the opportunity, he knew just what to do. Fred gathered this mob and pushed them forward, and then, without me needing to say anything, he came back behind and waited while the sheep found the gateway and moved through. I was so pleased with him. I thought he may have got too excited and stirred the sheep up, that he would just chase them, but no, he sensed where they needed to go and sent them there. What a clever little dog. Maybe next year he can get put on the payroll!
