  • morning light gently beams into the old Mungo shearing shed highlighting the outback craftsmanship. The smell of lanolin still present in the wool polished timber…the silence giving me time to ponder on the action that once transpired on these very floors…. / / / more of my outback Australian photography can be viewed by clicking on the preview image below. / “

  • Albert Rain Storm © Vicki Ferrari This is taken at Albert, New South Wales, Australia – approximately 1987. It is a big storm that had come across and dumped an amazing amount of rain, then left, then came back again. Nature is wonderful, the opportunities that she provides us photographers with! This was scanned from an 8X12 print from one of my original portfolios. This was ‘softened’ in photoshop – the original film was the old grainy kodak 1000 asa, which I loved for the grainess. Then you couldn’t get it anymore! I will put the original in Storm at Albert ©, so you can see the difference. Any comments on which is better, and why, would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading and looking! (non grain and smooth)

  • / / / Photographs of sheep grazing and lambs being suckled. Photograph taken ‘as is’ in a field adjacent to our garden parameter. Taken with Sony Cybershot EXIF DATA / - DSC 150 / - 1/100 sec / - Normal OEV F 5.2 / - f 2.83 / - ISO 100 23.7mm Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are quadrupedal, ruminant mammals typically kept as livestock. Like all ruminants, sheep are members of the order Artiodactyla, the even-toed ungulates. Although the name “sheep” applies to many species, in everyday usage it almost always refers to Ovis aries. Numbering a little over 1 billion, domestic sheep are the most numerous species in their genus. Sheep are most likely descended from the wild mouflon of Europe and Asia. One of the earliest animals to be domesticated for agricultural purposes, sheep are raised for fleece, meat (lamb or mutton) and milk. A sheep’s wool is the most widely used of any animal, and is usually harvested by shearing. Ovine meat is called lamb when from younger animals and mutton when from older ones. Sheep continue to be important for wool and meat today, and are also occasionally raised for pelts, as dairy animals, or as model organisms for science. Sheep husbandry is practised throughout the majority of inhabited world, and has been fundamental to many civilizations. In the modern era, Australia, New Zealand, the southern and central South American nations, and the British Isles are most closely associated with sheep production. Sheep-raising has a large lexicon of unique terms which vary considerably by region and dialect. Use of the word sheep began in Middle English as a derivation of the Old English word scēap; it is both the singular and plural name for the animal. A group of sheep is called a flock, herd or mob. Adult female sheep are referred to as ewes, intact males as rams or tups, castrated males as wethers, and younger sheep as lambs. Many other specific terms for the various life stages of sheep exist, generally related to lambing, shearing, and age. Being a key animal in the history of farming, sheep have a deeply entrenched place in human culture, and find representation in much modern language and symbology. As livestock, sheep are most-often associated with pastoral, Arcadian imagery. Sheep figure in many mythologies—such as the Golden Fleece—and major religions, especially the Abrahamic traditions. In both ancient and modern religious ritual, sheep are used as sacrificial animals. In contemporary English language usage, people who are timid, easily led, or stupid are often compared to sheep. • Situated near Coleambally, NSW Tubbo Station is a 7000 acre property managed by Four Arrows Rural Management. In 2008 & 2009 i was fortunate enough to spend a fair bit of time at Tubbo photographing the woolsheds, and the shearers who work at Tubbo. This collection is the culmination of time spent out at Tubbo and i would like to thank Four Arrows for allowing me the opportunity to access Tubbo; to Damian Smith (manager) for allowing access to all areas; to Rob (Urana Shearing Contractors) for allowing me to spend time with the men and women who work the sheds of the Riverina; and a special thanks to all the shearers, roustabouts and cooks that put up with me – especially, Sarah, Josh, Robin, Scott, Chris, and the Fridge. Thanks so very much.
