Now I discovered a rather useful tip for up-sizing photos for poster printing. Up until a few months ago any photo scaling I did was left to be resampled by PS. This isn’t a good idea generally. Now when providing images for use on RB they ask for BIG files so I have been having to upscale some of my shots. Some of the seasoned pros may do this the way I will describe, others may not. I have found that doing it this way upscales your images massively without any obvious loss in quality. (Thats not to say that there is not any though) Open your image to be upscaled and open the Image size Dialog box from the Image menu in PS. Select “Percentage” in the document sizes drop down menus and enter the amount you wish to upscale – I usually use 200% Then enter 360 pixels/inch as your resolution. Check the RESAMPLE box and select the BICUBIC SHARPER option (Note this is recommended for down-sampling your images in PS – but just trust me) Click ok and your image is resampled. Take a good look at 100% zoom and be amazed at the quality. It really doesn’t lose much in the resampling. Let me know what you think people :D

  • Let me tell you about Samuel. I met Samuel at Mamman Jeanne’s orphanage in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. Mamman Jeanne’s orphange is sponsored by CNEC Partners International and supported by Heal Africa. Samuel danced for us on arrival. He was awesome. I then had the privilege of interviewing him. In short, here’s his story: When Samuel was 2 and still being breast fed, his mother was set upon randomly by the militia. They do that, for fun. She was attacked with machetes and kiiled where she stood. Samuel was cut by the blow. You can see the scar on the left hand side of his face. He also has some scars on his scalp. Oh and he lost his left hand. Thinking they were all dead and their days work done, the militia left. Samuel was discovered, barely but still alive. He was taken from his mother’s corpse and somehow delivered to Mamman Jeanne. A remarkable woman who nursed him herself (as she was already breast feeding her own child). Samuel is now 16 and still at Mamman Jeanne’s orphanage. Which resides in a war torn country not ‘important’ enough to save. People like Samuel are everywhere in Congo. Everywhere. People like Mamman Jeanne? Not quite so many. Samuel likes playing soccer and dancing. Prior to us arriving a chid had been stolen from the orphanage by the militia to be a child soldier. How long do you reckon Samuel has? When people ask you to donate to these causes, they’re asking you because it’s the only way they will survive. It’s as simple and as gruesome as that. Not unlike the crime in the first place.

As I struggled to navigate through this site initially, a month or so ago, I was fortunate that several Bubblers were kind enough to share how they uploaded artwork to their profiles and art pages; links to music and videos and some other helpful tidbits which I recently shared with a few friends invited here… Hope this helps you present your amazing work easier, if you didn’t already know how… Clickable Link: / 1. Quotation mark / 2. What you want your link to say / 3. Quotation mark / 4. Colon / 5. URL code – http://www.etc…com Add Images: / 1. Upload Image, Title, Description, Tags, Groups & Items for sale – SAVE / 2. Click onto buy/preview and save to favorites the card, print and/or framed print, by right clicking image of card or print; then go back to artwork page / 3. In description box, add !exclamation point, then click to another browser tab / 4. Find image saved in favorites and click to highlight URL, Cut (ControlC), click back to browser tab with artwork / 5. Paste URL into description box and add !exclamation point / 6. You can add more than one photo of work (Tip: when saving in FAV, I add letter c (cards), L (laminated), M (mounted) & F (framed) when saving multiple images of same work. Just be sure to add !exclamation points before and after the URL. / 7. You can use this same process for adding to Profile Description Image Sizes: / For all sale items except clothing and calendars, the size of images uploaded should be 2500×3500, then in the ‘Items for sale’ section (below tags), you can check all: cards, mounted print, laminated print, canvas print, framed print and posters for sale. If someone requests Large prints, medium & large posters or laminated prints and/or calendars you can then upload a larger image. Profile Page: your URL for your profile will be www.redbubble.com/people/yourname to edit this page, you can add links to other sites and pictures like instructed above, in the describe yourself box. The daily feed question request has been helpful to me, not having to sign in daily. They’ll send you an email of your daily activity – you click onto any underlined feature, activity or comment and you are there – I save them in my email inbox, until I receive the next one. Challenges: RB just made most of the challenges really very easy as the group will send notice in your overview feed, click onto enter now and all the work you have uploaded will show up to chose from for entering; note whether they require a TAG, you may need to edit before entering. They have not yet mastered entering “writing” works, most groups do it in forums. Groups: join the ones you feel you can get the most exposure and follow their specific rules, you can click onto anyone in your watchlists’ list of groups to seek commonalities. Or, while looking at artwork posted by others, on the right side where the description is – below are underlined groups that have accepted the artwork and you can click those to learn more. Watchlist: Add people you feel share the same tastes in artwork for support – by clicking on names of commenters, bubblemailers or checking my watchlist and reading profiles, seeing artwork & groups in common. Bubblesite/Gallery: this URL is different than your Profile page it would be http://yourname.redbubble.com – you can click this tab on your page to build and manage it as you add artwork – I suggest you get used to some of the above, so you have optimum pricing and exposure for items for sale. The templates are easy and to manage, you click and drag your artwork into categories you chose. Customers can buy directly from your gallery, without being redbubble members, or you can simply share the URL with friends to see your photos. Written works are not included in the gallery, but all photos uploaded for sale will automatically be in the Manage section to be added to the categories you move them to, I manage my gallery once weekly. Text Formatting: / BOLD to make text bold =bold / Italic to make text italic =italic / Underline to underline text =underlined / Small Text make text smaller =smaller text Comments: when someone comments on your work, you can reply (click) and they will receive a feed that you responded – if they are rude (click report) or delete – when you just comment below you will be the only one who knows. Hope this helps you navigate the site better as your page reads… / Overview Groups Account Art Clothing Writing Calendars Journal Watchlist Favorites Promote Bubblesite Bubblemail These above are yours – the ones at the top of the page are the entire RedBubble Community or Main/Home pages… Home Art Clothing Groups MyBubble Have Fun!!!

  • Out of ashes, new beginnings, / Out of fire comes new power, / Out of darkness, new day dawning, / Phoenix, help me in this trying hour. DJ Conway The Phoenix is the most famous of all rebirth symbols, a legendary bird that endlessly renews itself in fire. / Initially a symbol of the cyclic disappearance and reappearance of the Sun, the Phoenix soon became an emblem of human resurrection – and eventually of the indomitable human spirit in overcoming trials. My deepest hopes, since the onsets of Black Saturday and the devastation and sorrow felt across the lands of Australia, as well as here on redbubble with the outpourings of love, compassion and strength in thoughts and prayers is that it reaches and touches all who have lost someone, something or some part of their heart to this great fire – find the inner strength and wisdom, and most certainly feel the generosity and outpouring from so many human beings around the globe. / The empathy and compassion felt around the world is ironically, a gathering of souls in Unity – it saddens me that it takes a tragedy of this proportion to focus, it also fills me with joy that it is still possible… May we continue in the light of love and unify for the benefit of all humankind – as Love can move mountains All sales of this piece will be donated to Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009 / This was an intention drawing while focusing on the victims of the Victorian Bushfires, photographed, colored in photoshop and Redfield plug-ins editing.

  • The Soft Sell - Creating Sales Through Non-Salesy Actions

You can reach a lot of people using the Internet, but creating personal and lasting relationships is a more difficult task. It requires an openness and reciprocity that doesn’t come easily to most people. Not that we artists don’t have the ability, but exposing ourselves emotionally outside of our art takes practice and a thick skin. There’s also a tension between wanting to sell our art and not wanting to be too salesy nor abuse others with self-promotion. So, how can we promote ourselves using a ‘soft sell’ or ‘no sell,’ yet create sales? Here are a few ideas that members have shared in the Selling Group. 1. Share information, help others, and give encouragement on RedBubble It’s easy to get mired in the minutia of everyday life. No one can fault you for addressing personal priorities and work, but it only takes a moment to comment on an artwork, t-shirt, or a bit of writing. Share your expertise or give another member an encouraging sentence or two about how their work made you feel. These activities help elevate your profile – and work – on RedBubble. The more people that view your work, the better your chance of receiving a personal referral. If you’re interested in sharing ideas or have questions about selling art, join the Sales/Sharing Group here. We don’t judge and we don’t bite. Also, check out the RedBubble site and individual group forums. 2. Network web-wide with kindred spirits Track yourself and your interests with Google Alerts and Google Blog Search, among other tools. Alerts and Blog Search help you find websites that have content related to your artwork, t-shirt designs, interest areas, etc. A practical example would be for the Game of Kings to track websites that talk about chess. Chess destinations and fans would surely be interested in learning more about a stellar collaboration featuring artwork about chess. Track them, and then contact them with a friendly head’s up about your work. 3. Add people to your RedBubble Watchlist, Favorite work, and Comment on work Here’s a case of quality over quantity. Discover new kindred spirits, curate your Watchlist, and make insightful and positive comments that spur conversion and relationships. These relationships can bring helpful advice, collaborations, and again, referrals. There have been a number of times that my work didn’t suit a friend’s aesthetic, so I referred them other RedBubble artists. I sent a quick Bubblemail to these artists to note my referral. It’s good karma, and the artists appreciated my thinking of them regardless of the outcome. 4. Publish a blog or website about your subject matter, geography, technique, etc. The key to a blog is updated content. Ask yourself if you can commit to updating at least once each week – if only to post a quote and a link to relevant resources. Readers can visit your website directly or subscribe to a feed of its content. Did you know that you already have a RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feed in your RedBubble profile? Just go to your Profile page, click on Journal, and then find the “RSS” button in the address bar of your browser. You’ll see a page like this one: Simply copy the RSS URL from the browser bar and add it to your iGoogle, MyYahoo, Feedburner, or other newsreader account. Outlook and Apple Mail accept feeds too. Here are a few members that have used their blogs and websites to drive sales on RedBubble: Matt Moylan and Lilformers Helen Nehill and Bowerbird Blues As well as, Ron Moss, Bryce Casselman, Diesel Laws, Soniei, among many others. Please post your blog/website below. 5. Develop a rapport with industry websites Giant caveat – DO NOT simply email a thought-leading website with a generic note and URL, e.g., “please highlight my t-shirt.” Try to develop a rapport with the author first. Start by reading their website. Make sure their content matches your artwork. Ask what it takes to be featured on their website. Send them occasional links to related articles unrelated to your artwork. You’ll make friends in no time. We previously discussed tactics for contacting periodicals, magazines, etc. here. RedBubble can help you find the best press contact for your announcement; learn more in the Sales Group PR forum. 6. Give a little, get a lot Everyone loves freebies, chotchkes – whatever you want to call them. Email a digital postcard to a friend or contact. Embed you message in your artwork and subtly note your URL in the email body copy. Create business cards or product cards. Here’s an example from the always-giving Nuh Sarche. Another way to share is to show works in progress. Sam Dantone is painting a wall mural. It’s not for sale, but I loved that he shared his progress on RedBubble. Whenever I think of costal scenes, I’ll return to this mural and then browse through his portfolio. I could go on forever, but I’m interested in the things that members have tried. Add you comments below, or join the conversation here. Thank you. Regards, / Jason
