We hear you! The current limitations on image shapes (i.e. aspect ratios) will be relaxed in the next release in early April. Currently only photos and artwork with aspect ratios of 1:1, 2:3, 3:4 can be made available for sale on RedBubble. We’ve got plenty of feedback that your creativity comes in more shapes and sizes than that! From April, we’ll implement changes that allow you to sell images of almost any aspect ratio on RedBubble, up to hefty panoramas of about 1:4.

Hey guys. With all the moaning and groaning, I thought that it’d be nice to lift the mood a little and do things for fun, so I am going to do the challenges that I do at my site right here. The first challenge is for you to create a piece of work using only basic shapes that come with Photoshop. I did an example one here Let’s see what you guys come up with. There are no prizes other than the “I’m better than you” comments that many will post for fun. ;-) Once you have done your entry, tag it with fqchallenge1 and also post it up here! PS: Thanks to ARTHURRTY for his initiative.

Hi – one of the products we’d like to have ready in the next couple of months is a calendar. Here’s our current thinking on how they would look (front cover and inside): (Image by Brent Pearson) The important thing with this design is that there’s not going to be a lot of room on the calendar to make notes. The reason for this is that the calendar will be made from photographic paper backed onto heavy stock (like the cards) which is super expensive. So to keep the cost of the calendar down we’ve developed this design. So the next step is to get some feedback on this design. How important is it to be able to write on a calendar? Any other thoughts / suggestions for the calendar? - Peter

Okay, so as I mentioned before I have the attention span of a gnat and this is how this little tutorial came about. Whilst trying out the custom shape tool in helping with the rule of thirds, I began to see something else that I could use it for. The image I’ve used to show this, has had no adjustments to it and I had no intention of posting it, but I think you will agree that the image itself probably isn’t the correct one to use in this case. I see a more distance scene or street scene giving the impression of being inside, behind bars, looking out. You could also use a wood effect with this, I chose to attempt to make it look like rusty bars. Or view the larger image HERE So basically do exactly the same as the first tutorial but don’t crop. Also, make sure that your foreground colour is set to something that you want to use. I chose a burgundy type colour, but black would have worked well in this case. When you have the shape over your image, press the enter key. I went to the filter menu and used the ‘craquelure’ filter. Went to the filter menu again and used the Chalk and Charcoal stetch filter. Then I went to the Layer menu and used the Layer Styles – Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow and Bevel & Emboss – in that order. You could also try a pattern overlay if you wanted a wood type effect, lots of things to try out with this one. Place your new ‘window’ on to a b/ground with bricks for example. hope you enjoyed this. Custom Sahpe Tool Part 1

Here’s a cool effect that you may want to try out at sometime. Create a new file 500px X 600 px with a transparent b/ground @ 72 dpi and then duplicate the layer. This is just a file to practise on :-) Grab your Shape Tool and choose Custom, then go to the top toolbar and pick the black triangle shape. Working from the centre of the image, draw the shape upwards past the top of the file edge (see image below), you might want to bring up the transform tool by using Ctrl + T on the keyboard to get the shape how you want it, then duplicate the shape layer. Once you have duplicated the shape layer, go to the history palette and take a snapshot of the work so far. If your history palette isn’t visible go to Window>History and click on History. To take the snapshot use the middle icon (it looks like a camera). With the duplicate layer active, bring up the Transform Tool by clicking Ctrl + T on the keyboard. In the centre of the box that appears for the transform tool you will see a small circle with four small arms sticking out (this is the rotation axis for the transform) you will need to drag that down to the centre of the bottom line. With your cursor outside of the transform bounding box, rotate the shape to the right or left – whatever takes your fancy. Then you can hit the enter button to accept it. You’re probably wondering why I told you to take a snapshot when you had duplicated the shape layer – it was because the next part of this doesn’t always turn out correctly spaced and you will have to go back to the snapshot to start again :) Taking the snapshot after you duplicated the shape layer, means that you can bring up the transform tool again and try a different rotation – more or less, depending on how it turned out the first time. You should still be working on the shape copy layer, now, hold down the Ctrl + Shift + Alt keys and then press the T key repeatedly until you have as many of the shapes in place as you want. You should end up with something similar to the first image – although yours may be properly centered :) When you click onto the previous shape layer or b/ground layer, the bounding boxes will go away. You can see that mine didn’t quite end up centered and that I would need to paint in the small area top right that didn’t quite fill. You could merge the 2 shape layers at this point and lock the transparency to fill the shapes with a gradient or different colour. You could also clip an image with the shapes, you could also fill the b/ground with a colour or image – play around with it a little bit and see what you can come up with. On the first image I filled the b/ground layer with black, merged the 2 shape layers, locked the transparency of the layer and then filled with a circular gradient. On the 2nd image I simply used a 3 pixel black centered stroke on the shapes after I had filled it with the gradient.

I just wanted to take a few seconds to promote some of my favorite little pieces of coolness: dingbats. Check out The 4-1-1 on Dingbats for more information on installing and using Dingbats! As many of us artists already know, fonts are NOT just about letters. There are several fonts (some which even come installed with your computer) that are not letters at all. Instead, each letter key represents a different picture, symbol, or shape (similar to brushes used in editing software). These types of fonts are usually referred to as Dingbats. Some dingbats are freeware or shareware (meaning you have to give credit, usually a link, where credit is due and or pay a small fee if using them for commercial use). Other dingbats are specifically created for personal use only and require commercial users to either gain permission (ahead of time) from the font creator and/or split royalties from products utilizing their dingbats. So, before you, the artist, uses a dingbat in your work, be sure to know what type of usage is permitted with the dingbats you are using. I have used some dingbats in my work, but only those that are deemed as complete freeware or shareware AND I always supply credit where credit is due. If you want to be sure what the status of the dingbat you are using is, be sure to read through the .txt “read me” files that are included in the font’s zip folder BEFORE you download them to your computer. I always read through every single file to educate myself on how I can use the dingbat. Also, save the original zip folders with the “read me” files in them somewhere on your computer in the event that the dingbat’s user status changes – this way you have proof that they were available for use at the time of your art’s creation. Installing dingbats is easy. Once unzipped, copy and paste the dingbat’s .TTF file (aka “TrueType Font” file) directly into the FONT folder in your computer’s Control Panel. After that, reboot your computer and you are good to go!!!! Like I said in the above paragraph, I save the original zip files on CD or in my external hard drive for backup purposes. Trust me, if you have to re-install your computer, you will be glad that you have these there and do not have to find them all over again and re-download them. HINT: I do this with brushes, plug-ins, and other ad-ins as well because I have had a computer crash once before and it was NOT pretty. After you have these little pieces of coolness installed in your computer, you can go to it and start seeing what you can do with them using whatever editing software you may have. (They work with Photoshop, Illustrator, Gimp, PowerPoint, Word, and so many other Editing, Graphic, and Desktop Publishing programs that you may already have installed on your computer.) Try adding color, combining them, or even using them in collage work! The possibilities are endless! Just always makes sure (I cannot stress this enough) that you are using them according to the usage permitted upon download. If all else fails, contact the original font creator to get more information! Here are some examples of what you can do with dingbats: So, where can you get some awesome dingbats? So I thought we’d create some strange spacey shapes in Photoshop. This is really easy to do – brushes, the smudge tool and a Hue/Sat Adjustment Layer. I have a photo to show you how to add a glow for the spacey shapes, I’ll add that later. Create a new file in Photoshop 600 X 800 @ 72dpi with a black b/ground. You need the black background so you can see what you are doing. You’re going to create the little spacey things first, each on a seperate layer, but remember that you will be able to use the Transform Tool to rotate, warp etc., Create a new layer above the b/ground layer by using the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Working on the transparent layer, go and grab a soft edged brush and pick a foreground colour that you like. I have chosen Green for mine. Check the little box at the bottom of the colour picker to ‘only web colours’ this will give you less colours to work with and will make the next process a bit easier. See image below. You can see where I have positioned the colour picker, and for the next colour choice I will move into the lighter Hue. You are going to click once with the chosen brush size and colour, then go to the colour picker and make the colour lighter, reduce the brush size by tapping the left bracket key once and click directly over the first stroke. Repeat this process till you’ve done about 4 in total, then you may want to move across to a lighter shade of your chosen colour and reduce the brush size a bit more to place a highlight. See image below Before you go on and use the Smudge Tool, you might like to duplicate the Orb type thing you just created and then turn it off using the little eyeball. This is in case you don’t like what you create – you won’t have to create the orb again. So go grab the Smudge Tool and in the top menu bar turn the strength down to about 85%. You can adjust this as need be – if you find it too strong, dial it down further. Keep the size of the Smudge Tool reasonably small and pull out some little tails, or something similar. See image below So you can see what I’ve done in the image above. Now you’re going to create a Scatter Brush in case you feel the need to add some trails behind it. Pick a soft edged round brush again and then go to Window>Brushes to bring up the Brushes palette. You can punch in the same numbers I have below if you like, or create one of your own. Once you have the brush as you like it, go to the bottom of the brushes palette and click on the ‘create a new brush’ icon, name the brush and save it. This will save you having to re-create the brush over and over again if you make more than one little shape thing. You may end up with something similar to the image below. Use the eraser tool to take away any of the scattering that you don’t like. You could also use a layer mask to do the same thing, just remember to switch to another brush before you paint of the mask. OK, now if you want to add some of these effects into another image it will look more realistic if there is a glow coming from the shapes onto the object. In this case it is a person. The image is brought to use by roxxannas at the Stock Exchange site and I have cropped the bottom and added more space at the top. Save the image, open it in Photoshop, drag it to the image you have been working on and place it below the background layer (solid black layer). You can turn the solid black layer on and off, it just makes it easier to create the shape against a black background. At this stage you will have to scale the shape and trails so, click on the shape layer and hold down the shift key, then click on the trails. Bring up the Transform Tool by using Ctrl + T and then scale, rotate, warp – do whatever you want. I added some more trails to my shape by reselecting my scattering brush that I made, reducing the size and making some extra trails. To make this more realistic, the woman would have some of the green colour reflected on her face and skin – lets go ahead and do that now. Select the layer with the woman on it, check that you don’t have your scatter brush selected, and then go into Quick Mask Mode by pressing the icon at the bottom of the side toolbar or pressing Q on the keyboard. I’ve clicked around the image where I thought a reflection of the green light might fall. You will be able to add and take away from this later, so don’t be overly fussy. Once you’ve finished press Q on the keyboard to exist quick mask mode, then go to Select>Inverse, to inverse the selection. Hold down the Alt key on the keyboard and click on the ying and yang symbol at the bottom of the layers palette (create new adjustment layer), choose Hue/Sat from the menu and when the dialogue box appears- check the box that says Use Previous Layer To Create Clipping Mask. The Hue/ Sat adjustment will appear, just change the Hue to match the colour of the shape and you can also fiddle with the Sat and Lightness if you want. See image below. You can make as many of these things as you like, just follow the same instructions for all of them. I’ve done another couple of shapes on the image below.

Very worthwhile reading, for everyone, IMHO! I’ll add this to my list of handy tips and tricks, so it’s easy to find from my profile page. I shall not tell you how big, but, let’s look at better. I told you, a wee while ago, about myshape.com Well, I finally did my measurements for it, and started my own personal online shop. And, while I am not entirely sure I agree with them as to what shape I am, I shall say that I thoroughly agree as to some of the pieces they tell me I should try. Sadly, so far, none of them are made out of black leather and held together by safety pins, but, some of them are beautiful, anyway, and would go quite nicely with my coloring and my lifestyle. Let’s take a look! / .................................................... I wrote that, above, yesterday. It included taking screenshots that I was going to upload to imageshack and put on here; and, I had copied off descriptions. Then, today, I learned there is an easier way. This is my Wish List from myshape.com Though, I took a few things off, for practicality’s sake (they went with nothing else); and, there are some things I would have on there, if could. See, once you get your measurements in and they know what size and shape you are, you can’t see things from the other sizes and shapes; though, you can still see the things that would fit you that flatter all shapes! One thing I learned about me, though, is that I change shapes! Sometimes I’m an H, sometimes an E, and, apparently, I spend a lot of time as a shape P. So, the things on my Wish List are for shape P, but, I could also be happy with some things from the other shapes. Anyway, at this point it is all academic as I can afford none of them. However, it might help me to choose more wisely in a thrift shop! If you have some spare time and a tape measure, you might want to give the site a try. If nothing else, it’s a bit fun and educatonal.

As many of you know, it is very easy to insert pictures and clickable links in various places around Redbubble. If you don’t know how yet then look here and here From that same account I post a lot of journals featuring other artists work. Some journals have 20 or so clickable picture links. Some of you may be aware, but if not I hope you find this of use, it is very quick and easy to do a lot of images in a short period of time. The wording required between the two ! is exactly the same for each type of picture (postcard, laminated printed, medium square, etc) and just by changing the description means copy and paste can mean very quick multiple postings. 2009 has been an intensely creative and inspired year for me! I have gained a terrific list idea from a wonderful bubbler, Anthea Slade, based on her own top 10 list of her own poems in 2009. I’ve been working on one from my favourites during the year, but it has been hard to whittle so many down to just 10, but I should be there in the next few days… As for my own, it is not always about most views, most features, most comments…some of them have been things that helped me through a moment, made me look at the world differently, or where a comment really changed something for me…I have tried to provide context where any of that is the case. Hope you enjoy xoxo 1. My ABC of Seduction / Views 154 / Comments 26 / Favoritings 7 / Featured by Poetry and Beautiful Women / Reason I have lately been immersed in a lot of poems and stories prefaced with (erotic) in the title, but this is probably where it all started in 2009! And the acrostic form is a fave for me – I love the alphabet and fun wordplay! The positive reception this poem received made me first consider I might not be too old to rediscover myself in creative writing pursuits (for though I’ve worked in editorial roles for many years, that has all been business business and it has been pure joy getting back in touch with my own thoughts, feelings, passions, beliefs). So this one ranks highest for me – consider it a beginning of my RB journey please! 2. I love coffee / Views 183 / Comments 35 / Favoritings 4 / Featured by Freedom in Words and Art and Poetry and Beautiful Women / Reason This shocked a few of my friends when I posted it – a poem which includes a twist…But I love surprising people and like being true to myself. And it did start innocently when I first began writing it, until my mind drifted… 3. Grief-stricken by the 23rd Psalm / Views 105 / Comments 18 / Favoritings 1 / Featured by All Out Emotion / Reason My Grandma is one of the worst deaths I have experienced and although I am quite a different person than I was 12 years previous, it brought me back into a lot of angsty thoughts from when my Dad died on 31 October 1997. This poem (and some of the others at those emotion-charged times) were a big part in helping me grieve. I also really felt empathy and encouragement of bubblers – but not the platitudes and get over it denial that some people seem to think will help such things…Thank you to everyone who touched my heart at that time or via a follow-up I prepared for a poetry slam challenge using Against all odds as a necessary requirement of the poem xoxox. 4. Oh the delights of dating / Views 108 / Comments 28 / Favoritings 4 / Featured 0 / Reason Something funny – second thing I performed at an open mic in Melbourne. Felt much more comfortable in that as my choice than the one I oddly selected for my so-called virgin appearance at The Spinning Room (211 High St, Prahran – but refer to 10 below if you’re interested). Loved seeing the fact that so many of us endure banal, ridiculous conversations just to better get to know someone. Felt so pleased to feel so commonplace, rather than the commitment-phobic freak I usually consider myself to be LOL!!! 5. Insane? / Views 107 / Comments 7 / Favoritings 1 / Featured 0 / Reason I was feeling a little out of touch and disconnected when I wrote this, but red bubble helped me through of course! A lot of people were Bmailing at that time a bit concerned, but all was well of course – just one of those things…And now I’m stronger for it of course! Special thanks to everyone who helped xoxo 6.Emotional bulimia / Views 106 / Comments 24 / Favoritings 3 / Featured by All Out Emotion / and Verses Dark / Reason So many people found interesting lyrical connections to this poem. It was certainly the case for me too. Tool, The Used, Tori Amos – I felt privileged that the sort of thing I had written could evoke so many great songs and images for people. 7. Ice cubes erotic / Views 119 / Comments 22 / Favoritings 5 / Featured by The Community of Erotic Submisson / Reason This is a sister piece to Masqueone and I love the inspiration I find across the bubble – photography, art, poetry – all of it makes me smile and feel so energised! I was worried I would seem clumsy and unsexy, but have been so thrilled by people responding positively to what I muse about when dwelling on erotic preoccupations! 8. Unfaithful / Views 53 / Comments 15 / Favoritings 2 / Featured by Politics, Race, Sexuality and Culture / Reason I was worried a lot of people might judge me when I posted this. Much like the Rihanna song apparently offended people unused to thinking of girls cheating (harumph to that double standard…), it made me ponder on when we feel a self-fulfilling prophesy start to happen. Anyway, I’ve been pleased that some people seem to see through those words, to me, and have encouraged me in my journey. Such respect means the world to me! 9. Salvation / Views 165 / Comments 31 / Favoritings 6 / Featured by Verses Dark / Reason You save yourself or you remain unsaved Alice Sebold wrote the seven most powerful words I have learned in her book Lucky. I’m a devotee and salvation was basically about that journey xoxo 10. Cracked / Views 49 / Comments 12 / Favoritings 0 / Featured 0 / Reason This is the first poem I ever performed in Melbourne. At The Spinning Room (a location also mentioned for 4 above). It was an odd choice, yet it was the only one I printed to take. In 2010 I hope to be more selective – for I was stunned by the reaction it received. Lots of praise and comment, but it was taken in much more intimate light than I would have guessed! It has since made me second-guess myself to some extent – but hopefully not over-think too much LOL :D Love and laughter everybody! / Cheers / Deb xo PS: And here’s to a most wonderful 2010, full of food, wine, poetry, laughter, friends, health and happiness!
