Hi – one of the products we’d like to have ready in the next couple of months is a calendar. Here’s our current thinking on how they would look (front cover and inside): (Image by Brent Pearson) The important thing with this design is that there’s not going to be a lot of room on the calendar to make notes. The reason for this is that the calendar will be made from photographic paper backed onto heavy stock (like the cards) which is super expensive. So to keep the cost of the calendar down we’ve developed this design. So the next step is to get some feedback on this design. How important is it to be able to write on a calendar? Any other thoughts / suggestions for the calendar? - Peter

We hear you! The current limitations on image shapes (i.e. aspect ratios) will be relaxed in the next release in early April. Currently only photos and artwork with aspect ratios of 1:1, 2:3, 3:4 can be made available for sale on RedBubble. We’ve got plenty of feedback that your creativity comes in more shapes and sizes than that! From April, we’ll implement changes that allow you to sell images of almost any aspect ratio on RedBubble, up to hefty panoramas of about 1:4.

Here’s a cool effect that you may want to try out at sometime. Create a new file 500px X 600 px with a transparent b/ground @ 72 dpi and then duplicate the layer. This is just a file to practise on :-) Grab your Shape Tool and choose Custom, then go to the top toolbar and pick the black triangle shape. Working from the centre of the image, draw the shape upwards past the top of the file edge (see image below), you might want to bring up the transform tool by using Ctrl + T on the keyboard to get the shape how you want it, then duplicate the shape layer. Once you have duplicated the shape layer, go to the history palette and take a snapshot of the work so far. If your history palette isn’t visible go to Window>History and click on History. To take the snapshot use the middle icon (it looks like a camera). With the duplicate layer active, bring up the Transform Tool by clicking Ctrl + T on the keyboard. In the centre of the box that appears for the transform tool you will see a small circle with four small arms sticking out (this is the rotation axis for the transform) you will need to drag that down to the centre of the bottom line. With your cursor outside of the transform bounding box, rotate the shape to the right or left – whatever takes your fancy. Then you can hit the enter button to accept it. You’re probably wondering why I told you to take a snapshot when you had duplicated the shape layer – it was because the next part of this doesn’t always turn out correctly spaced and you will have to go back to the snapshot to start again :) Taking the snapshot after you duplicated the shape layer, means that you can bring up the transform tool again and try a different rotation – more or less, depending on how it turned out the first time. You should still be working on the shape copy layer, now, hold down the Ctrl + Shift + Alt keys and then press the T key repeatedly until you have as many of the shapes in place as you want. You should end up with something similar to the first image – although yours may be properly centered :) When you click onto the previous shape layer or b/ground layer, the bounding boxes will go away. You can see that mine didn’t quite end up centered and that I would need to paint in the small area top right that didn’t quite fill. You could merge the 2 shape layers at this point and lock the transparency to fill the shapes with a gradient or different colour. You could also clip an image with the shapes, you could also fill the b/ground with a colour or image – play around with it a little bit and see what you can come up with. On the first image I filled the b/ground layer with black, merged the 2 shape layers, locked the transparency of the layer and then filled with a circular gradient. On the 2nd image I simply used a 3 pixel black centered stroke on the shapes after I had filled it with the gradient.

Okay, so as I mentioned before I have the attention span of a gnat and this is how this little tutorial came about. Whilst trying out the custom shape tool in helping with the rule of thirds, I began to see something else that I could use it for. The image I’ve used to show this, has had no adjustments to it and I had no intention of posting it, but I think you will agree that the image itself probably isn’t the correct one to use in this case. I see a more distance scene or street scene giving the impression of being inside, behind bars, looking out. You could also use a wood effect with this, I chose to attempt to make it look like rusty bars. Or view the larger image HERE So basically do exactly the same as the first tutorial but don’t crop. Also, make sure that your foreground colour is set to something that you want to use. I chose a burgundy type colour, but black would have worked well in this case. When you have the shape over your image, press the enter key. I went to the filter menu and used the ‘craquelure’ filter. Went to the filter menu again and used the Chalk and Charcoal stetch filter. Then I went to the Layer menu and used the Layer Styles – Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow and Bevel & Emboss – in that order. You could also try a pattern overlay if you wanted a wood type effect, lots of things to try out with this one. Place your new ‘window’ on to a b/ground with bricks for example. hope you enjoyed this. Custom Sahpe Tool Part 1

Hey guys. With all the moaning and groaning, I thought that it’d be nice to lift the mood a little and do things for fun, so I am going to do the challenges that I do at my site right here. The first challenge is for you to create a piece of work using only basic shapes that come with Photoshop. I did an example one here Let’s see what you guys come up with. There are no prizes other than the “I’m better than you” comments that many will post for fun. ;-) Once you have done your entry, tag it with fqchallenge1 and also post it up here! PS: Thanks to ARTHURRTY for his initiative.

This didn’t come out quite as I intended it to, but you can see the tree shape from this side. TREES / A tree is an / amazing thing. It can / grow so tall that we are in / awe of it. Birds, insects and animals / all live in trees, using every available inch / of space. Trees are native to each part of the world, / with the eucalypt being an Australian native. You should / not stand underneath a tree during a thunderstorm, as it could / be struck by lightning, and you could be killed, but if not that, then / sustain a serious electrical shock. It’s amazing to think that every great / tree was once a small twig growing in the ground, but with time and tender / loving care, they have grown to their great heights. I think it is somewhat incredible / to think that trees out in the wild manage to thrive and keep growing, without the nurture and love. / It is a sad day when / a tree must be felled, / but this is often required / for safety reasons. / There are professional / aborists, or tree surgeons, / who will come and chop down / the tree. The wood is all recycled, / and turned into mulch or woodchips, / for use in the garden. Isn’t it just / great how nature can be recycled?

anti gravity / denis darzacq and “I throw myself at men” / lilly mcelroy god, this is so inspiring. I wish I d done it myself-it’s not like the thought hadn’t crossed my mind-but the last time I took a photo in a supermarket was 1994… (and they were great! I don’t know if my sister would still still two humungous balls of wool up her top and pretend to dance with them, but I have evidence on film that she once did!) plus, someone who must’ve read my mind as a kid. I was an architect in year 3 and designed houses like this! (of course, much planning, didn’t decide to be one officially in adulthood/do all the study) I went further-the water feature out front came inside and in places there was like glass over the top you could walk on and see them below. Plus a sunken lounge area with a pond feature! here are the designs some made for real

I never thought I’d write about this subject – but here goes! / I have a new undergarment! Yes, and it’s a doosy. I have learned that when you reach 5_ (hum, hum) you start to find your mind wandering in strange directions that you never really needed to think about in your youthful past. It’s true what they say – at a certain age things start slipping, sliding down, and bulging out in places that aren’t too attractive. / Anyway, I heard about these new undergarments on “Good Morning, America” and if Dianne Sawyer endorses something that is way good enough for me. Therefore I trekked into the nearest Sear’s store (darn right, Sear’s) in search of “Instant Shape” products by Dr. Robert Rey. / This morning while dressing for the office and a school board meeting that would take place this evening (and yes, it was long and boring like they said it would be) I put my new undergarment to the test. First I slipped into the blouse that I had decided to wear then stood back and looked in the mirror. Ugh! Sure am glad swimsuit season is over – there were enough bulges there to look like a topographic map of the mountain regions in the Guadalupes. / Then I decided to slip into the new undergarment, put the blouse back on and look in the mirror again. Now, I didn’t remove the tags on the new undergarment because if it didn’t work I had plans to go retrieve the forty bucks I plunked down at the Sear’s counter and head right over to Abuelo’s (one of my favorite restaurants). I put one leg in, then the other and then began the process of pulling the undergarment up into the appropriate position. I said “process” for good reason. I tugged up about 1/2 inch, wiggled my behind to see if there was any room to go futher, squeezed my knees together, sucked in my gut and tugged again. Ok – now we’re talking – I managed to bring it up about another inch. Wiggle the butt, squeeze the knees, suck in the gut – tug again – repeat. / Wow, I had managed to get the thing half-way into position. Now I grabbed the crotch of the undergarment and slightly tugged so as not to rip anything – that’s when I learned that this thing was made of something that we really should be building bomb shelters out of – no amount of pressure could rip this little number. When the tugging at the crotch didn’t work I tugged in an upwards motion on each leg – that seemed to help and now I should be able to simply pull the top part up over my protruding middle section. Wal-la – it’s on! I rejoiced! / When I put on the blouse and looked in the mirror I could really see a difference – the bulges were much less noticeable and just like the tag had said, I had a better “shape definition to my bottom!” This thing works miracles! / I headed out to the post office, a quick stop at the office, and then on to the beauty shop for a trim. It was at the end of the beauty appointment that I began to feel the urge to visit the ladies room. I almost broke out in a cold sweat thinking about having to come out of this new undergarment to accomplish the task at hand – and then having to get the undergarment back up into position could be a real feat considering the small amount of space in the ladies room and the fact that other people would be waiting for me to come out. So, what the heck, I simply stated, “OK, I need to visit the ladies room but I have a new undergarment on and this could prove to be difficult. If I’m not out in five minutes somebody please come in and help me!” Well, that raised the curiosity of every woman in the room – “Did you get one of those things they talked about on Oprah?” came the question. “I don’t know – I don’t watch Opray (yes, I’m a sinner) but they did talk about it on “Good Morning, America” and hey, this thing works.” I stated. Then came more questions – “Is it comfortable” “yes,” I replied. “Does it make you itch?” “No, it has Aloe Vera in it somehow!” “Is it hard to get on?” “Well, I’m sure I’ll learn a better way to do it eventually!” / Then everyone wanted to see it! However, that’s where I drew the line! No, I wasn’t going to show my undergarment to anyone – they would have to go to Sear’s (darn right, Sear’s) and look at them on the rack. / When I came out of the ladies room everyone wanted to know if it was difficult. “Well, sort of. You see, when I pulled it down it reminded me of opening a can of biscuits! Everything just sort of spilled over. The problem then was, well – have you ever tried to close a can of biscuits?!”

I saw a nifty little trick by Scott Kelby and thought that it might be a useful addition to anyone’s tips and tricks bag. Because I have the attention span of a gnat, when I was about half way through writing this down, I saw another simple use for the shape tool as well. So, you’re gonna get 2 for the price of 1 ;-) The rule of thirds – yep, I’m saying the rule of thirds in the same sentence as the custom shape tool ….... am I crazy or what! It turns into quite a nifty tool for checking your image and saves getting out the rulers and grids … so lets start. Open your image>duplicate your image>close original. Do all of the work you would normally do in post production, except the cropping. Go to the Shape Tool and pick the Custom Shape Tool from the fly out menu. You’re going to need the info palette open at this stage, which is defaulted with the Histogram and Navigator windows. If it isn’t open go to window>Info and click on that to open your info palette. Look for the 3×3 grid in the shape tool which is located about the 5th row down in the default shapes. Check that you have the shape option highlighted, not the path from shape or fill shape option in the menu bar. In the Geometry options, make sure unconstrained in highlighted. Now you are going to be watching the W_H or width and Height on the right hand lower side of the info window. You will also need to find out what size your final image is going to be. If you’re working on a 300_200 dpi image great, if not you will probably need to adjust that prior to trying out this little trick. You will also need to check if you are going to be viewing the width and height in the info window in “in” or ‘cm’. Okay, now draw out over your image and watch the width and height in the info palette, once the figures you need are there stop drawing. Press enter on the keyboard go grab your move tool until you have your image aligning to a rule of thirds, or don’t enter and go grab your move tool until you have the grid positioned to give you a good rule of thirds. You can now grab your crop tool, place your crop around the grid lines of the custom shape tool and crop. You can then go ahead and delete the custom shape tool layer. I’ll post my next use for the custom shape tool in another entry, cos I’ve just had about several interruptions and I’m way behind :-) Custom Shape Tool Part 2

Groups on Redbubble are getting too picky with what they think is suitable for their groups. I disagree with this kind of closed mindedness. Art takes on many forms and shapes, and if we’re really interested in being creative then that talent must be allowed to flow. From now on, any group that rejects my work also gets booted from my list. If my work isn’t good enough for you, then you are not good enough for me!

Well, I didn’t stay away so long this time. I wanted to update everyone on the dreamosophy website building process. The pace of the progress has picked up some. Most of the text on the homepage will be changed soon and we have been putting in some archive entries on the blog page. Most of the office staff at Al-Mita marketing are finishing up their research projects and getting ready to re-write the text that will be going on the homepage, as well as some for the other pages on the site. My own project really is just staying within the blog because I have a couple of articles to post on what to look for in a legitimate biz-op offer and what you might find in an offer that is most likely a scam. We also have many links, graphics and photos to upload yet, along with a lot of sales copy. We want to make sure that everyone knows what each program or product can or can’t do for them. We also have a couple of surprise items that will be on the site and I promised the boss I would keep it a secret. If we keep going at the pace we did today, it wouldn’t surprise me if the website got finished earlier than expected. By the way, in the blog, there is a current posting for yesterday called “Marketing Madness.” It was about my experience with a sales call I had a couple of nights ago. Next week I hope to post an article here for the fine folks of Red Bubble. I’m not sure what topic I will attempt to tackle, but I’m sure everyone will enjoy the reading and more importantly, the thought it provokes. I’m a little torn between two different topics. That’s all I got today, but I’ll return soon! buckboyy: copyright – 2008
