This famous temple in Henan Province stands at the base of Song Shan, a sacred Taoist mountain. International renown after featuring in Kung Fu movies, Shaolin is the traditional home of the masters of the art. Associated with Zen Buddhism, the monks for centuries used their skills to fight foreign invaders and internal enemies. It has been a rocky past, with the entire monk population slaughtered at one time by the Manchus More recently, Chinese authorities during the Cultural Revolution of the 1970s banned Kung Fu and closed the temple.
