Totem #1 is the first of a series of pieces that represent an animal attached to a human figure, like if they are part of the same body. They can also be animal totems, if you prefer. The Totems carry also a very simple concept: our deep attachment to Nature as one single thing. In those pieces, I intend to make the human head always black and white and naturalist, while the animal is colorful and filled with abstract shapes. watercolor and pencil on cold press watercolor paper / 12×8.5

The images of shamanism has gradually reached almost mythical proportions in the western world, however, I do not share this peculiar and optimistic point of view. Shamanism is often used as a synonym for wisdom, truth, purity, non -violence, ecology and Spiritual harmony. I wish it was so, but my experience has taught me that the truth is not that simple. There may be individual shamans who embody a number of such qualities, but that does not mean that the shamanic culture as a whole embodies them too. A deeply spiritual and symbolic image representing the both the power and serenity of man as the ‘Primal Self’. Here he is seen with arms raised forming the crescent of the (feminine) moon whilst also representing the powerful horns of the ‘Aurochs’ (sacred bull) of the Celts. His spin e forms the double helix rising up to reveal the horns of the King Stag. He is clothed only in the wings of the golden eagle, his sacred totem connecting him with the spirit realms. As with all my works, this artwork was created from handmade papers and mixed organic media from the rainforests of Northern NSW, Australia.
