  • I do. And everything she symbolizes – the familiar sights and sounds, the period of our lives embedded in long term memory with our mothers, sisters, aunties and neighbors in it, the uniform sound of a sewing machine intertwined with casual chitchat. I still remember those gentle hands, gliding skillfully over soft materials, more than capable of turning a piece of fabric into lovable garments. Even my first girlfriend, the sweetest of souls, from a family of many, used to make clothes for herself, in patterns and colors she desired, as tight as I could wish, to perfectly fit the young man’s eye. Nowadays, the skill has migrated to distant lands, in search of a new pair of hands, not necessarily gentler, certainly cheaper. Time flies. We are left to do what people whose expiry date is fast approaching do – recycle the recollection of the good old days, the age when we were young and good looking. Now, we are only good looking. Such is life.

  • Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 / For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: / a time to be born, and a time to die; / a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; / a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; / a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; / a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; / a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; / a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; / a time for war, and a time for peace.

  • Although the background (or “holder”) of this is canvas, the surface is entirely covered in papers and fabrics. Most of this is craft papers, tissue paper, denim, silk, etc. On top of the collage I painted with acrylic in washes. The branch is sewn on. The 3 leaves are drawings on Reeves BFK (Best all round paper EVER! I use it for everything.) in oil pastel. Their backgrounds are watercolor and acrylic and each is stitched onto the canvas. As for the meaning, the title sums that up. :) Featured in Painters in Modern Times, Forests, and Falling Leaves. :)

  • Dubrovnik Old Town has been listed since 1979 as Unesco World Heritage site(Best viewed in large format) / The solitary figure of the sewing lady, familiar to all who have visited Dubrovnik Old Town in the past decade at least. She sits, constant, at this very spot, year long, at the steps to the Dominican Monastery. In traditional dress, and sewing traditional patterns. She lays out her samplers tenderly on the stone steps to display her work. But for whom? Summer’s gone and the stones sigh cold breaths of relief, and the whole town rests, like the ebb tide. But the Sewer sews, the Summer gone. The Dominican Monastery in Dubrovnik was first established in 1225, though the original building completed only in the 14th Century, to be largely destroyed in the earthquake of 1667. The position chosen by the Domenicans for their monastery was one of the most sensitive defence point of the city, its immense structure becoming incorporated into the very fortress Walls of the Old Town. The church is one of the largest examples of Gothic buildings on the Dalmatian Coast, and includes a cloisters, a pentagonal apse, and a number of Gothic arches connecting to it. The outer walls shown in this section are typical of the unadorned tall exterior. / Considerable repairs have been undertaken on the structure initially following the earthquake of 1667, and more recently the damage during the Balkan War in the 1990’s.
