  • Strathalbyn, South Australia

  • This is regarded as the poorest (and most dangerous) illegal settlement in PNG. /

  • When I was a child I found a print of this painting by Andrew Wyeth, Christina’s World: / / The story behind and the image itself have always fascinated me, and this painting was one the reasons I began to paint from the age of 8. / High horizon lines, a sense of space and exploring a sense of where we are in our (inner) world have always been interests of mine in my art. / This photo, taken in March 2008 in the western reaches of the Falkland Islands, is one of many I have taken over the years exploring themes inspired by Christina’s World.

  • As one looks down into the ruins of the old penal settletement of Port Arthur, it is impossible to be unaware of the haunted quality of the place. The beauty of the setting contrasts uncompromisingly with the stark outlines of the penitentiary, the lunatic asylum, model prison, Isle of the dead, point Puer and it’s mass graves, the 1996 massacre memorial site…. / Going on the ghost tour at night didn’t help much  The Hospital built in 1841-42 was the third constructed at Port Arthur. Placed on top of Settlement Hill, above the prisoners’ barracks, the hospital was made up of wards, kitchen, baking room, laundry and morgue. As the convicts of Port Arthur worked in heavy industries such as timber-getting, accident victims at the hospital were common. The hospital was staffed by a doctor and a number of untrained convict orderlies. In the 1890s, the hospital building was sold to the Catholic Church, but was unfortunatley burnt in the 1895 and 1897 fires. (photo taken 2006)

  • This old wagon is located in the settlement area of Cades Cove located in the Great Smoky Mountains. I was lucky enough to be hanging out with Lori Walton and her husband Don, just walking around, absorbing the moment, as people shuffled by. I shot this in sepia because I wanted to give the feel I felt as I was looking at it. Something about the aroma of the old wood along w/ the shed, as you inhale it, sends you back to a time when it was at it’s highest peak, working the fields, delivering goods and transporting the family. So shooting it in sepia was the only way I could really portray the feeling I get everytime I go to this area. I shot this in Sepia Mode set on my camera / Was in SS priority / SS at 1/125 / Fstop at F8 / ISO at 400 / Focal Length at 17mm / Exposure Comp at 0

  • Acadian Village in Lafayette, Louisiana, is a replica of a Cajun settlement from the 1800s. It’s so peaceful to go there, to step back in time, and to enjoy a way of simplicity that has vanished.

  • “A Place To Call Home Series“ / / The Homestead / (Subtle Color) / The Homestead / “The Homestead”: (sepia) RedBubble Album: Ranches and Homesteads*

  • Night scene shot from a window with a Yashica Mat 124 TLR and TriX film.

  • They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they kept only one; they promised to take our land, and they did. Red Cloud

  • Taken at the Naperville Settlement, Naperville Illinois.

  • Whilst out with some friends on a day visit to Murton Park, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire (England), which houses the Yorkshire Museum of Farming, amongst other attractions, we enjoyed the brilliantly built replica of a Dark Ages / Viking settlement which is another of the museum’s main attractions. The work that has gone into the historical accuracy is astounding. The site contains many replicas of homes and social gathering places, built to accuracy according to available historical and archeological information. This shot is of the wood stack sitting just outside of the main hall where the village members would have gathered together to have meetings, and use this as a social venue. It was much like a pub or even a church might be today. It was the social centre, and always had a fire burning which is why they had such a large pile of wood on hand. I love the textures of the wood here. Extreme sunlight meant that the shadows under the eaves was strong, so that is why I chose to shoot it as a HDR image. This is a HDR image combining 7 bracketed shots using Photomatix Pro for Macs. Slight adjustments in lighting and tone were done using the enhanced details tool. I have left the image unadjusted. As HDR images go, this is “As Is.” Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll / 28-300mm IS zoom lens / f/7.1 / 1/500, 1/320, 1/200, 1/125, 1/80, 1/50, 1/30 / ISO 400
