Well, this was a little comic I was sort of informally asked to do, and I’m not sure if it’s ever going to take off, or what, but here’s the first one anyway. Basically, the premise is that the strip focuses on tshirt vendors, Abilene (or just Abi), and Matt, (yes, Mattman, he’s modeled after you, in recognition of my first buyer (that I know of) who run a stall at a local craft market called Shirtheads. The idea was that I would seek out tshirt designs that I like, and feature them in the strip, and get a bit of background from the artist to go along with it, as well as post a link direct to the tee, etc. If anyone would like to see more, let me know, and I’ll try to make it a semi-regular thing! Keep bubbling over, folks! / Caanan. by caanan

Eerily enough, I think this is the look most people get when I send them their Shirthead questions. / !http://images-2.redbubble.com/img/u…

Eerily enough, I think this is the look most people get when I send them their Shirthead questions. / Chris Wahl is another one of those unstoppable bubblers who had a lot of funky tshirts to choose from / / but it was Paper Rock Scissors / / that ended up inspiring in me yet another simple, (and kinda nasty) gag. Think of it as a no-budget Curiosity Show. :oP Enjoy! What do you think are the decisions people use this game most for? What should be solved using Rock Paper Scissors? Usually, I think it’s used to decide who gets the short end of the straw. Like who’s gonna do the dishes, or who’s gonna climb the fence to retrieve the ball from Old Man Cooper’s haunted mansion, things like that. / Soccer matches should definitely use them on 0-0 draws. Definitely makes more sense than those stupid penalty shootouts. Maybe in the boxing ring as well, although the gloves might pose a problem. What inspires you, day by day? Creatively, the internet is a bottomless source of inspiration. The amount and array of fantastic art and artists inspires me to no end. Actually using the ‘stumble’ button on my Firefox browser is also a great source of inspiration. You never know what little gems you’re going to find. What do you enjoy drawing the most. Why? Besides women and monsters and the usual nerdish fare, I enjoy drawing the human face- eyes and mouths especially. You can convey so much emotion and character when those two features are drawn well. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy drawing caricatures as well. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? Back when I used to work at Disney Australia, I used to think I was some big rebel walking around the Disney corridors in a ‘Mickey Rat’ t-shirt. Most likely they just thought I was some big smartarse (and they were right). / Some honourable mentions though would go to my DC Vertigo Chris Bachalo Death shirt, My Cure Disintegration shirt and when I was younger, my Ghostbusters shirt. All faves. Who should come back from the dead as a zombie, and what would happen? Maybe the late actor, Jack Palance? His bone structure and villainous ham acting would be perfectly suited to the task. He’d be the best one-handed pushup zombie around. What did you want to be when you were 6? Unsurprisingly, I wanted to be a comicbook artist, since collecting comic books were a big part of my life growing up. I eventually realised I didn’t have the patience to do so and just stuck to illustration instead. I think I also wanted to be a puppeteer at one stage as well. What’s the funniest thing ever? A toss up between my 4 year old dancing, Bert and Ernie and cartoon gags on the internet involving airline safety art. If you were asked to create a new law for Australia, what would it be, and how would it be enforced? A no mullet law, especially on young children. Ever seen a 3 year old with a full-on chullet half way down their back? Very tragic. It’s a form of child abuse I tells ya! Under the new laws, asking for some ‘business in the front, party in the back’, ‘hockey hair’, a ‘chicago neckwarmer’ or a ‘MacGyver style’ cut at the local hairdressers will be a punishable offense. As much as I love David Bowie’s music, he’s to blame for this scourge of bad hair. Damn you Ziggy Stardust! How did you find the bubble? What makes you stick around? Fellow Aussie comic artist and previous Shirthead, Simon Sherry brought RedBubble to my attention via the Pulp Faction forums. Ever since then my paid work output has dropped considerably. Thanks again, mate! / I had a little break from the Bubble recently as I sometimes go through shifts in creative direction (meaning I have a short attention span) but dammit, t-shirt design is the coolest fun. I just couldn’t stay away! What will happen in the next five years? Most likely I’ll be frantically trying to justify my existence, both personally and creatively, since at the end of those five years I’ll be turning 40! Eep. Thanks Chris! Now get that worried look off your face… ;oP And I hate to be a broken record folks, but this is the last time I’ll mention it, I swear… Seeing as how it’s the final week and all… but Celadore is still struggling to keep the top spot over at Zudacomics.com so if you haven’t voted, there’s one week left to get me sailing over the finish line and finally be a legitimately paid comic artist. :oD Joy! A picture tells a thousand words / as do these tshirts !http://images-3.redbubble.com/img/clothing/bodycolor:teal/size:small/style:wome…

A picture tells a thousand words / as do these tshirts by sparklehen Open yourselves to a little illumination this week, as we gather some more thoughts from sparklehen – take it away ‘Sparky’! ;o) Any first date experiences you can share with us? Disastrous or no? When I first started dating I seemed to be asked out by “bad boys ” which some girls might be attracted to, but I was really a goodie two shoes….. / Wait a minute, I think I might be getting mixed up with the storyline from Grease! No, I really can’t think of any disastrous first dates, but my mind would wander (really badly!) if the conversation wasn’t going well or they didn’t make me laugh. Hence this series, but I wanted Jane and Keith to actually like each other. It would have been a cheap shot for Jane to be nasty about Keith (Or maybe I’m subliminaly trying to correct my past!) I just have to state that my first date with my husband was obviously very successful and there was no mind wandering going on what so ever! What are some everyday random thoughts you’ve never vocalised before but can share with us now? Hmmm, I suppose swearing, I love swearing in my head. Oh yes, I can say what I like to whom I like. You see I have two pre-school aged boys, I have to watch what I say now. Thing is I didn’t swear very much before having children. I think it’s when you are forbidden to do something the temptation becomes greater! Who do you think should be put into a locked room together and not let out until they’re the best of friends? I could easily say certain political leaders for obvious reasons. Instead I’m going to say my head and my guts (ok I know that’s a what not a who, please bare with me) But they are in conflict an awful lot, and I’m fed up with being indecisive. We all know to go with your “gut feeling” but to be honest I sometimes don’t know which is which. I’m becoming a ditherer. Any advice on how to tune in on my digestive tract is welcome! What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? This is a tough question, because you’re asking me to choose and you have all just found out how bad I am at making decisions! (10 minutes later) Ok I’m back. Based on the number of times they have been washed. My favouritest tee is Dendoo’s So Not Sophisticated however, I’m due to buy another RB Tee so I’m afraid that will be my next new best tee. What do you remember most from your childhood? Why? I was watching a programme about diets through the different ages and last night’s one was about the 1970’s. I was born in 1974 so I do remember some of it. It’s hard to pin it down to one thing, as your childhood is made up of so many things good and bad. Sweeties (Lollies or Candy) being one of them. / There seemed to be a lot of fizzy stuff around like sherbet dabs, flying saucers refreshers and wham bars. Sorry to be uncouth, but I could empty a room eating all that stuff. All those chemicals must have really upset my insides something awful! What are the most important lessons children need to learn ASAP? As a mother this is something I ask myself a lot, and of course the answer changes a lot. We need to teach our children to be positive, and approach life and all its challenges with a positive outlook. All I see in the media is doom and gloom and I sometimes despair and wonder what kind of world I have brought my children into. However this is not helpful or constructive to think this way, so a more positive attitude has to be adopted or what’s the point in going on? Each generation has had to face adversity in one form or another, obviously some worse (a lot worse) than others, but we are still here! If you were Prime Minister for a day, what new law would you create and how would it be enforced? I would ban all celebrity gossip magazines. I know it would be an unpopular law. I have found myself, on occasion, reading them and getting sucked in. When I have finished I feel absolutely filthy, and promise never to indulge or encourage this dirty and evil pastime again, until the next time! So they would all be taken off the shelves and Doctors waiting rooms tables, easy! What would you like to happen every day for the rest of your life? I want to be able to laugh everyday for the rest of my life, even on my death bed. See the humour in everything! Because laughing (I’m talking about a hearty belly laugh that leaves your sides and jaw aching) is so much better than moaning and it means you’re fearless! What are some inspirational things you’ve seen in ‘08 thus far? Well it’s more like inspirational people. I’ve come across a few this year. / My sons are my biggest inspiration, their innocence, the way they ask questions all the time and the way they use their imaginations are wonderful! This year I have come across some, actually many, amazing artists. Karin Taylor her joyful, colourful and energetic characters always make me feel happy. Jemimalovesbigted and talianadesign create the most funky and sunny retro patterns. Not forgetting purelydecorative who does the most beautiful vintage inspired collages. How did you find the Bubble? What made you stick around? It was purely by accident, just browsing really, and I thought that I would give it a try. I never thought for one minute people would be interested let alone buy my t-shirts. I’ve stuck around because of the above mentioned artists (of course they are but a few who are inspirational and wonderful) You can easily spend hours being awe inspired; This is a fantastic place to be! I would like to thank everyone who has looked at my work and thought it was worth commenting on, favouriting and buying. But not forgetting Caanan for his fantastic creations, I’m honoured! And thank YOU, Sparky! If anyone knows of a great cafe or pub – where it’s quiet enough to talk, and clean enough to maybe break out the pencils and have a little fun, can you bubblemail me with some suggestions, and I’ll post a more formal call to action in the next couple of days. (Oh, and preferably close in the city, as I will probably be staying at some cheap centrally located hostel). Cheerio! Bubblemail me, Sydneysiders! Do it. Do it now…

Let’s get funky this week with / jemimalovesbigted / !http://images-1.redbubble.com/img…

Let’s get funky this week with / jemimalovesbigted / and some Jello Cups / Mm. Tasty. :o) Are these in fact jello cups, or was it a pattern first that you named after the fact? What inspires your designs? Is it random discovery or do you set yourself goals? I was born in the late 70’s so by the time I was old enough to realise what was going on we had hit the 80’s, the era of bad hair and fluorescent socks (oh and don’t think it looks good now kids just cause its being re-hashed)… It never sat well with me. Bell bottoms, short skirts, peace, love and mung beans kept calling me back to the 70’s where the patterns were big and lairy and the polyester revolution was born. I love the fashion, the music, the energy of that time, so when I go to design a pattern, inevitably I get lulled back to those over the top styles and especially the colours. That is where my main inspiration comes from. As for the name Jello cups, well when that pattern evolved on screen, that is what popped into my head… I usually enjoy naming them all after creation, and it is part of the fun… I try and make sure the name reflects my inspirations for example Bond Lounge and Setting Sail on the Seas of Retropolis / / What have been some patterns you’ve noticed over your lifetime? Ooooh many patterns occur throughout life, like the pattern of being eternally broke, or the pattern of idiocy that keeps bringing shows like Big Brother and Today Tonight on to the telly… Or what about the pattern of apathy that stops us from moving forward in trying to undo some of the wrongs that we have committed towards the environment and humanity… I should stop there, I am getting all excited. How did you find the bubble? What made you stick around and get active? I was surfing the web one day and I can’t remember exactly which site I was on, but an advert popped up, or was there, about this new site launching in the near future for artists called RedBubble and all you had to do was promise them your first born son – no actually it was just my email address to be notified of when the site was up and running… So I received an email telling me RedBubble was live and I signed up. I think it was the first day. I stuck around because I was really excited by Peter’s vision and thought it was an absolutely marvellous idea for artists to be able to peddle their wares, and help to get a name for themselves. When I signed up I think there were like 15 people and I was immediately sucked in by “Paul Vanzellas”: http://www.redbubble.com/people/paul beautiful photography. His urban landscapes blew my mind. I know its cliché but it is so true. He and so many other people on this site are such an inspiration… like Sparklehen who you will all be so familiar with by now, Natalie Perkins who creates the most gorgeous curvy women integrated with heavenly patterns and wonderful paisleys, the best you will EVER see. “Juilee Pryor”: http://www.redbubble.com/people/juileep who has a way with a camera and film unlike any other (like a camera whisperer or something) and Chelsgus who is an amazing painter and she uses the most delicious pallets around. Why would I go anywhere else?? P.S. there are so many more I wish I could fit you all in. / / What’s your favouritest t-shirt you’ve ever worn? Haha Favouritest is the best word ever by the way =) …. Ummm it is now a toss-up between this one, this one and “this one”: http://www.redbubble.com/people/stuartm65/clothing/766511-2-i-fuckin-love-colouring-uk-spelling that made my partner and I laugh so hard and for so long, I just had to get it! And everyone here loves gratuitous RedBubble advertising right?! …It is actually true, I was not much of a t-shirt wearer before this lil’ community started up, and there are so many more that I want to get… For example this one is next on the list =P What did you want to be when you were 5 years old? Why? I don’t know, 6 years old… But from about 8 on I was addicted to drawing. I used to copy the characters out of Archie comics. So for as long as I do remember I wanted to be something creative, but that changed as I grew from being just an “artist” to a photographer, then to a film director. I didn’t end up being a world famous film director but I am pretty happy I have pursued my passion for photography and drawing, just now I draw on a computer instead. / What are the most inspiring things you’ve seen/heard of this year thus far? I find inspiration all the time from many people and situations, but I would have to say the MOST inspiring thing I have heard/seen this year hands down is Kevin Rudd’s apology to the Native people of Australia. I think that a collective exhalation of breath happened on 13 Feb. It was a very long time coming and it really made me feel excited about living in Australia again, it seems that I did not feel comfortable here under the rule of the short man with big eyebrows. How’s the next ten years looking? Busy, Busy, Busy! I really wonder what I used to do with my time before I had a child… I plan on finishing my degree – FINALLY and hopefully getting my design business really up and running. It only plods along at the moment (through choice) I have a few little plans up my sleeve on how to make some extra cash through being creative as well, but I am not giving all my secrets away…* Note see question 9 =) How could a sunny Sunday afternoon become the most awesome sunny Sunday afternoon ever? Ooooh a live band or ten somewhere outside with all my friends sitting back enjoying the sunshine, the music and the company… Oh and there should be loads of yummy food and nice wine included with that scenario. Or Jesus, Moses, Mohamud, Hubbard, Bealzebub, Shiva/Visnuet al, Krisna and etc …. all together in a jello ring battling it out for world supremacy and domination. My money is on Buddha, he could give some major belly bumps with that gut! Can you invent something for us the world might need? I actually already have but I really can’t tell cause then someone might steal the idea. Sorry! / / Got heroes? Yeah! The whole first and second series…. I can’t wait till series 3 starts. =P Me either. Me either… :oP Thanks Jemima! As always, tune in next week folks for more shirty goodness! This week’s strip is inspired by purelydecorative !http://images-0.redbubble.net…

This week’s strip is inspired by purelydecorative and this fantastic design… but also partly inspired by the multitude of journal entries that pop up on the bubble from disillusioned artists who can’t make a sale and are thusly calling it quits. They seem to be a regular weekly (or more) occurence. Here’s to you! Why do you take photos? I’ve always done this memory thing all my life, even when I was a little girl, of forcing myself to stop and really impress the moment on my memory when I’m doing something, or am somewhere that is really significant to me. These significant moments aren’t always beautiful ones either, but I guess I feel like I’m trying to store them up to help my future self remember something significant. So taking photographs is a way to do that in solid form, and a lot more reliable than my memory too. Plus, sometimes things are just so heart-breakingly beautiful to me I just want to keep them forever…hence the photo. My partner Ben is a musician and he once wrote a song that described it this way : “taking pictures of the things that you love to have in two dimensions in your hand, so you can remember…” What has inspired you throughout your life that has brought you to this creative existence? Why do you do what you do? Wow, these are big questions and to be honest I’m not even sure I know the answers. Can I get away with putting on a goofy face, shrugging and saying “ I dunno”? My love of nature has to be a big part of it. I was drawn to textile design, which is the first paid creative work I did, partly through a love of clothes and fabrics, and partly through a love of pattern…inspired by Nature. I was always mesmerized by the amazing patterns in Nature- the tiny stripes on a flower petal or the random splattering of clouds in the sky, it’s all so perfect. That’s also why I call myself “Purely Decorative” because it’s a kind of statement in favour of allowing art to be just decorative and beautiful and joyful, without necessarily having to be deeply conceptual and/or minimalist. Not that I am against those things but I am against the current tyranny of those things in art. I guess I do what I do- not really sure what that is right now- but anyway, I do that because while I’m drawing, painting, photographing or whatever, I lose a sense of myself and time and just drift along happily in a little creative bubble…hmm, is that where Red Bubble comes from? Now I get it. I like that feeling of being so absorbed in creating that everything else fades away. It’s probably similar to the effect of meditating I guess. Of course when things aren’t going so well it’s just plain frustrating, but that just spurs you on . How did you find the bubble, and what made you stick around and create? I was lying in bed one morning- something I’m very good at, and listening to Melbourne’s Triple R community radio station, when one of the announcers did a spiel on Red Bubble and made it sound irresistible. She’s the person behind Clemformation, and her tshirt designs are very simple and clever. So, that day I checked it out, loved it and off I went. Kitsmumma was one of the first people to comment on my work, and she is such a lovely supportive and inspiring artist that I’d have to say she really made me keen to stick around. Then of course other people also came along like Tambatoys , Sparklehen and Jemimalovesbigted to name but a few, and the community aspect of Red Bubble has been just so lovely for someone like me who works alone most of the time. What do people overlook? How incredibly, microscopically short our lives are, and how our time is our only true wealth. Honesty. And of course, the benefits of full-cream milk and real butter. Yum. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? This is tough because even though I have some favourite tshirts that I’ve actually worn, I have many more that I don’t own….yet. / To be strictly correct in answering this question (rare for me) I’ll stick with ones I have actually worn; this one Eat Money? from the New Internationalist organization, the back says: / Only when the last tree has died / and the last river been poisoned / and the last fish been caught / will we realise we cannot eat money. and this one from Tambatoys and this one from Jesus and Pablo Diablo. What did you want to be when you were six? An air-hostess with a pale blue 1960’s style suit with matching pumps and flight case, or an archaeologist- no, maybe that came later, around 12-ish I’d say….or an artist. When did you last laugh til you cried? Why? Looking at a silly email someone sent me of one of those poor cats with the “lion cut”-it just looked so incredibly embarrassed to be made to look like that, and the cut is ridiculous. I love silliness. If you could give everyone in this world one thing, what would it be? Why? The chance to experience someone else’s life for just a day- might help make us all a bit more tolerant of each other. Or the ability to see the Earth in 50 years time- might make us all stop being so blasé about the oxygen we breathe. A block of Lindt chocolate may not hurt either. Where would you like to go? Why? Kyoto in Japan, because it’s a repository of all that is magnificent in Japanese design and craft and I think Japanese design is the best I’ve ever seen. New York- for the art museums and zeitgeist and because it’s New York. New Zealand to just walk and walk and walk in stunning wilderness. Canada for the same reason. Great Barrier Reef- because it’s incredible and won’t be here too much longer. / There are many, many other places- these just popped into my head first. Got dreams? I dream of one day building my own stone and wood house on a bit of land by the sea, with the mountains behind it and a stream and a huge orchard and vege garden…and a little separate studio where I create my world renown masterpieces just for the sheer joy of it. Down the road -not too close, but within walking distance is a lovely little village full of creative and compasionate people, and a fabulous pub with a beer garden-that’s about it. You did say “dream” right? I certainly did Thanks Rebecca! And don’t forget to come back next week, folks! for more shirty goodness. ;o) Memory lane… The Original Strip BigFatRobot Chris Richards Paul McClintock David J Cunning Johdie Tambatoys Simon Sherry Ross Robinson Natalie Tyler thickblackoutline rubyred Liesl Yvette Wilson Chris Wahl Jaywalker sparklehen jemimalovesbigted purelydecorative nofrillsart Superteam: Non-Stop animo Tabita LilyM bahgoesthesheep LuckyVegetable o0OdemocrazyO0o MuscularTeeth

  • Shirtheads - featuring nofrillsart
    by caanan

This week we bring you some more nofrillsart! / No, not my comics… this nofrillsart !ht…

This week we bring you some more nofrillsart! / No, not my comics… this nofrillsart And there was lots to choose from, but there was one I found particularly interesting… It is there. See? What would you do, if you had a Stealth-bomber? Well obviously I would be super stealthy! Maybe I would cut a few hot laps round town…try and impress Wonder Woman. Actually, I would probably complain about the cost of fuel and have to pick up an extra paper round or something just to get it out of the driveway. After that I would see the world…South America, China, Egypt are top of my list… really as if it wouldn’t be totally cool, tell me I’m wrong. Ignoring the fact of course that they are purpose built killing machines, they do also look damn sexy! What fuels you to create? How did you end up on the creative path? Hmm…I guess you are not after an answer like a hot Milo late at night to give me a sugar rush?! Well, I guess I am driven by the notion that ‘us’ humans are doing so many things wrong, that with a little introspect and thought we could do so much better. I guess that’s what I try to address the most with the messages in my art. I also tend to get fueled and inspiration to create artworks from a wide variety of areas in pop culture such as from reading the paper or watching the news, documentaries, movies, music and lastly by visiting galleries. I also really like to work with other artists on public art projects as that will always keeps you on your game. As for how I got on the creative path, thankfully I had a very supportive upbringing with lots of access to art supplies being that my mother was an Art teacher. I combine this background with having a bit of an obsessive need to create, which defines and justifies being able to call myself an artist and provide an excuse for being creative and generally making a mess. How did you find your way to the Bubble, and what made you take to the tshirting? I first heard about the Bubble from a good friend of mine Ive Sorocuk (nonstop). But it wasn’t till one Friday night when he rocked round to my joint sporting one of his new RB tees that I went…I’m so there! I had actually done a little screen printing in the past, a few spray stencil tees and a bunch of them using transfer paper for exhibitions. So when I saw the quality and ease of using the bubble I was instantly hooked. I always figured my artwork was graphic enough to sit well on a t-shirt and I like the idea of art being outside the gallery system at street level. And the rest is, as they say, history. (Sorry, I have always wanted to say that line!) What’s your favouritest tshirt ever? Yikes, I knew this question was coming. I have had so many cool tees over the years. But I guess I have the fondest memories of being a young kid and getting a Ghostbusters iron transfer t-shirt from Myer in Melbourne…complete with, cringe… my name on it in felt lettering. I saw it get made while I waited and I loved that shirt. In retrospect I’m not too sure about why I put my name on it, but I think it must have made me feel like part of the Ghostbuster’s crew or something. I’m also pretty partial to sjem’s Rats of the sky t-shirt with the text no pigeons written on it, but I can’t say it is my favorite because I get really uncomfortable stares when I wear it into take away food shops…especially chicken joints?! What did you want to be when you were 12? I always made Art, but back then I wasn’t aware you could actually make a living out of it. So my goal as a child was to be a hunter. But the twist is I wanted to hunt people who hurt animals! As animals were my next great love as a child (Not in the biblical sense). What would you do with a million dollars? You mean after I finished rolling around in it? I would not go back to work that is for sure. Not that I hate my job or anything, but I am not a morning person and truth be told I don’t like clocks and having to work to them. I would probably buy a building to set up as a gallery and art studios. Then put enough in the bank to live off the interest. Following this I would help out my family and a few close friends. And finally set up an art based charity to help change the cliché of the starving artist. War. What is it good for? Not much. But it is often used as an ‘excuse’ for religious, political or social bigotry or economic gain. Who do you admire? I admire so many people for so many reasons. First and foremost it would be my parents and friends for supporting and accepting me. In terms of Art it goes without saying that currently the artists Banksy and Shepard Fairey are favorites. Locally in terms of artists it would be my good friend David Dellafiora (Field Study), who I work with on heaps of projects out in the real world. On Redbubble there are so many great artists. But I guess right now I most look forward to seeing anything by Lucan Industries, Danny Nolan, Scott Robinson and Ruby Red in my activity monitor. Basically anyone who is creative, intuitive, honest and peaceful gets my respect. Who needs to be locked up, away from society? Oh, too easy! Politicians, they do more damage than anyone else. Some may say me because I can be a social menace, but it’s all lies! 20 years in the future! What do you see? Seriously, my eyesight really isn’t that great! Hmm…Thickblackoutline will give me so much grief if I don’t say something positive here. Hopefully, I see myself still making art, happy and having accomplished any goals I set myself. I like just being, plodding along so it is hard to get that wrong. In terms of the world I think there will be some radical changes in environmental aspects because this is about to hit a critical mass. As for issues of violence in the world I think twenty years is two short a time for much reform on this. Sometimes I like to pick shirts merely because I’d like to have a go at drawing my own rendition of some funky designs, and I really liked this little guy… / / by Rhys McDonald / (I had to resist REALLY HARD to do a strip based on this one ;o) / What do you think the differences are between the lives of someone who’s ugly, and someone who’s beautiful? (By standard definitions of course. It’s all subjective) I never get whenever you see those gossip rags with the headline ‘celebrities caught without make up’ or something and you look at them and they’re just average joes, no better than the guy over there with the pot belly or the homely woman at the petrol station – if someone is even remotely okay looking they’re instantly distinguished from the rest of us schleps. If you’re only looking at someone at face value you’re selling yourself and them short. Fugly people try harder I think, sometimes. Look at Donald Trump – guy’s got a head like a shoe box yet he’s married to a supermodel, it boggles the mind, I’m sure she didn’t go out with him because he’s funny and does great impressions. Beautiful people are like exotic birds, there to be studied and observed for their vibrant colours and peculiar fashions and often shapely features. It works both ways, look at Steve Buscemi, he’s a sex symbol for god sake. If you’re ugly, offset it – knowledge is sexy, did you know 8 out of every 10 rocket scientists is married to a playboy bunny? No joke. Uggers be proud, you CAN lead a normal beautiful life, you can!....if not, thats what plastic surgery is for. (if you cant afford that, buy the t shirt) What kind of robot would you like to see invented? Crumping, booty dancing ones. I don’t need to explain why….picture it, how hot is that. It’d be like NYC Mech, only better! What did you want to be when you were 7? I think when I was seven, I wanted to be a Ghostbuster – because I was clearly grounded in reality and focused on something. I always wanted to be one of those people who said ‘I only ever wanted to draw’ but I think I was 20 before I finally figured out what i wanted to be. I was a strange, solitary child. Who turned into a strange solitary fellow What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn/seen? My favouritest shirt I’ve ever seen was from the webcomic Dead Days, it was a take off of the old ‘No Fat Chicks’ tshirt that just read ‘Yes Fat Chicks’ it tickled my fancy to no end. Can you give us the lowdown on the Plastic Age? What’s it about? The Plastic Age is my webcomic and online home, I started it 3 years ago and there’s currently 193 strips archive. 5 of those are funny. I started the site in 2005 basically because I was really enjoying drawing and webcomics appealed a great deal to me, I had no idea what I was doing and only in the last 18 months or so have I really taken a look at everything in the broader scope and started to try and polish it, and take it more seriously. It’s basically a collection of gag comics, intending to be funny, with some sting in them, hopefully. I’m working on longform and story driven, I’ve got it in me somewhere – but some irrelevant humour is always top order. 4 panel funnies appeal to me a great deal. And no, I’m not a Buggles fan. If you could switch the minds and bodies of two people around, who would they be, and what would happen? Oh man, thats a good one. Actually thats very mid 80’s teen comedy almost. “Eric and Tiffany are two BEST friends, Eric’s home computer fuses out and these two somehow switch bodies because due to 1980’s ignorance about how computers are insanely powerful mysterious machines that control everything. UH OH! Now what will we do!” You know the type of movie where the computers are the size of small sedans and everything is set to synth and keyboards with a dash of day glow neon sweatpants, and they’d have to overcome awkward things like Eric would have to avoid kissing a boy while he’s switched and wacky stuff like that…I kind of want to see that movie now, in my head it’s really vivid and you know in the end Eric and Tiffany learn important life lessons but they can never tell their parents about their ZANY adventure!...or something like that. Please take us through your creative process. Idea to finished art? Where does it come from? How long does it take? What do you use? etc. I work pretty much all digitally, I either draw straight into Photoshop or loosely sketch the image(s) and scan it in and ink/colour over the top of that. I have a Cintiq now and I’ve gone completely apesh!t over it and I also use a Mac. That covers the what, don’t ask me what pens or paper to use, besides the wacom i only use a .5mm mechanical pencil. The ideas come from everywhere – what I’m currently reading, what books are on my desk, something I just saw, a name, it generally just sparks and snowballs into something, I’m really easily influenced by things around me and really enjoy certain subjects but I really dig new things too, as they say variety is the spice of life. I’d feel like less of an artist if I didn’t say ‘I draw because I’m compelled to, its all I know how to do’ – which is true, I just never announce it. The time I take depends on what it is I’m doing, I can sketch up a comic pretty quick now and finish it up in a few hours, but I still revise and re work the hell out of other things. Like, the Hellboy image in my gallery came together in two sittings really easily, because I had a good idea of how it would look. I’m horrible for having a good concept of what something is going to look like, what’s in my head invariably changes when I put pen to paper, usually for the better but I like happy accidents. I spend the most amount of time on colour, because I love that stage more than any other, I don’t always plan an image in my head but I always have colour in mind, one way or the other. What are you digging right now? I’m really digging podcasts right now, how cool am I. I can’t seem to get enough of them, Webcomics Weekly have been the flavour of the month, and I just stumbled onto a new one called Sidebar which is pretty good too, actually if anyone is listening to any good podcasts give me some url’s to check out! What’s the best thing about girls? What kind of question is this! Thats like asking what’s the best thing about this delicious cheeseburger? Its delicious and that’s the hook. Girls, you’re awesome. No seriously, you’re rad. You’re also insanely hard to draw (but drawing your girlfriend makes for good foreplay) and a pretty big inspiration to me, I don’t think I could say ‘this is the best thing about girls’ it’s the overall package, and a cute package is something that translates well into a drawing. I’d be remiss if I didn’t say ‘boobs’ somewhere in this answer. If I asked you this question sir, what would your answer be? C’mon, lets just chat about how awesome girls are… This isn’t about me… ... cough... ;o) Who would you like to see show down in the ultimate wrestling match? Now you’re talking my lingo. I’d like to see ‘The Real Man’s Man’ Steven Regal Vs Hillybilly Jim – just to see if they cancel each other out, if not I’m sure they could squeeze oranges to make juice in a series of horrible vignettes. Failing your ability to secure and book both those talents I’d like to see Dink the Clown Vs Cheetum the one eyed evil midget – preferably in a light tube match, OR a Taipei Death Match. I guarantee there’s going to be 4 people googling ‘Cheetum’ and ‘Taipei Death Match’ now. Thanks Rhys! For all your entertainment needs, here’s the Plastic Age – Check it out! :o) (And lastly, for any previous Shirthead victims who wanted to purchase their original art, I have one week left in Australia, then after that it’s gonna be much more expensive to send them out, so… let me know!) And we’re back! With interview number 20, no less! A minor milestone. And what better way to celebrate, than with the aptly named / Superteam: Non-Stop / Whose Wrestle Cat stole the hearts of hundreds in this year’s Comikaze 24 hour challenge. / Read the comic here Where did Wrestle Cat come from? Where is he going? He follows the lead of my favourite superheroic animals such as Beppo the / Superchimp and Ace the Bat-Hound from back in the day. I love the idea of Batman putting a mask on a dog and thinking it is a good idea. Fiasco Bombasco had the same idea with his cat due to his love of wrestiling plus of course his taking so many punches to the head. Fiasco’s dream is for Wrestle Cat to become World Wrestling Champ (pets division). This dream is at odds with Wrestle Cat’s own ambitions of a life full of sleeping, eating and playing with rolled up plastic bags (he likes the sound they make against his paws). If you could have a knock-down drag out wrestle with someone, who would it be? I would only wrestle purely for entertainment so I would choose Andre the Giant. Modern professional wrestling is a bit too homoerotic for me to watch comfortably. Instead of characters like George “The Animal” Steele, Rowdy Roddy Piper and The Iron Shiek it’s all oiled down buff pretty men. Homoerotic sports definitely have their place but that place is Football. / A cage match between a bearded pot-bellied cartoonist and the reanimated corpse of Andre the Giant is what we need to have wrestling be interesting again. Did you know Andre the Giant never stopped growing until he died? Imagine if he is still growing! What inspired you throughout your young life? What are the major tentpole / moments, turning points, or influences, etc. that have made you who you are today? The earliest turning point I can remember is reading the tiny comic that came with the Super Powers Green Lantern toy I got from Kmart when I was seven years old. It was the first comic I remember reading and it blew my mind that you could tell a story with so many drawings and ended up spending a lot of time doing just that at home with the encouragement of my older brothers. A few years back I met David Dellafiora (aka Field Study) and Glen Smith (aka nofrillsart) through a few art projects and programs and they were instrumental in me getting into action and actually producing and selling my art and comics with their guidance. And relatively recently, participating in the Daily Grind Iron Man Challenge had a huge amount of influence on my work. Drawing and posting comics online daily and getting feedback was fantastic while it lasted and really made me push myself and see what I can do. It was so encouraging being amongst so many talented cartoonists who ended up being my friends. What’s awesome about comics? Why do you make them? Comics were such a large part of my upbringing and are still such a part of my life still that it still suprises me when others don’t share that bond. For me they are my main source of entertainment and inspiration well above television, movies and books. It only makes sense to me that if you love something so much that you want to be a part of it and give something back. What isn’t awesome about comics? It’s the easiest form of visual storytelling out there. How would you survive a zombie invasion? I think my survival would solely depend on information I have retained from zombie comics and films. Firstly, I would collect my local loved ones and head for the nearest pub. Where does a guy even get guns from in real life? I’m sure one of my friends would know. I bet my dad could make some kick arse weapons! Also, I live in the town of Lara, Victoria. The zombie invasion could have started weeks ago and I wouldn’t have noticed. What are some of the coolest things that have inspired you this year thus far? I went to Supanova Perth along with my fellow Monster and Robot members Edward J. Grug III and Jessica McLeod and I had the hugest sensory overload ever. I saw children dressed as superheroes at Supernova, saw Galapogas Tortoises getting fed at the zoo and got to touch a tiny shark and some rays. The whole time just inspired a need to create again and I’m still riding that high. Also, they have totally different icecreams over there! They have Drumsticks but they call them ‘Trumpets’. And remember Memphis Meltdowns? They have them but in different flavours! Plus I drank a bottle of Chilli Cola! What’s your favouritest tshirt ever? I had a bright stripey cross colour tshirt which I had for over ten years and only just recently retired and it’s now the cover for a couch cusion in the garage. It looked kinda like what Ernie from Bert and Ernie wears. My current favourites are my bright green TK Longmire shirt with an octopus on it (looking it up I see it’s no longer available) and my red longsleeve Bandit Ghost shirt from my own redbubble store (it makes me feel kinda superheroic). What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever laughed the longest and/or hardest at? The first thing that comes to mind is the idea of a theme wedding where the couple get married on toilets. To me it’s the ultimate extravagance and if it doesn’t exist somewhere already then surely it will within the next few years. If you could take a musical outfit and turn them into a gang of superheroes, who would you choose? Who would they become? The Beastie Boys! They would be superheroes in the vein of Japanese ultra science heroes like Jet Jaguar or Ultraman as they were in the Intergalactic video and in their down time they would be tuxedo wearing smooth movers like in the Sure Shot video. So, it’s five years from now. What’s been going on? We are sipping cocktails by a pool on the moon! I build myself a penthouse / apartment out of Golden Girls DVDs shortly after my powers manifested. I got contacted by Prime Minister Emdur and was appointed Minister for Adventure, leading to many excursions to the microscopic planet full of Werewolves and Draculas. Also, I own a new type of pet. It is like an elephant but it fits in the palm of your hand. Damn. Now I want one of those too! And can we get a tshirt comp going for the best ‘Emdur for PM’ tshirt? ;oP Thanks Ive! And tune in next week, folks, as we get back to our regularly scheduled weekly updates! Who will it be? Even I don’t know. Oops. This week’s tshirt that caught my attention !http://images-3.redbubble.net/img/clothing/bodycolor:babyblue/cropped/size:small/style:me…

This week’s tshirt that caught my attention is by animo So let’s all say ‘hello’ to animo, as she takes her meds… ;o) This tshirt was inspired by a post in one of the forums here – this post, actually Have you ever had an imaginary friend? Do you have one now? No, but my sister had enough for the both of us. She still has one now (in her mid-thirties) which she sends to me when he’s been naughty and lets me know via SMS of his impending arrival. While visiting he would hide himself in the tumble-drier and on a few occasions [because he was not in my imagination, but my sister’s] I didn’t realise and threw in a load of wet socks on warm for half an hour. Luckily imaginary vomit comes off with a light shake. How did you find the bubble? What made you stick around? Actually, I found the Bubble in May 2007 while doing some research with a Melbourne gallery owner for a business idea we had promoting Australian art photographers online – what we had in mind was already being done ;-) I stick around because it’s a creative treasure trove, full of interesting and inspiring peoples (some of you have become offline friends as well) What’s your favouritest tshirt ever? That’s a hard one – there are so many great tees. At the moment my fave tee is a screen-printed version of the original ‘Hell’ design by Lucan Industries which curiously enough I found in an opp shop. When do you stop watching? While a man is having his head hacked off by a homicidal maniac on a greyhound bus in Canada… oh gawd. Or when your next door neighbour is f@#king his dog, you shouldn’t be watching, you should be ringing the RSPCA!!! If you could pull a ‘freaky friday’ mind swap on two people, who would you choose? Germaine Greer and Paris Hilton. What would happen? You do the sums. What did you want to be when you were 12? I wanted to be an archaeologist – while most of my friends had pictures of cute guys out of Dolly magazine plastered all over their bedrooms, I had dinosaur posters and those 3D plywood dinosaur skeletons that were so popular in the 80s. Enough said. Who are you heroes right now? Wonder Woman, because she is a formidable female role model… that and she lets me borrow her invisible plane. Too cool. What do you better than anybody else? Animo’s Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat Casserole Surprise… (between you and me Caanan, the surprise is there’s no Tuna in it!) Critically Endangered… because they’re so tasty. If you could pass a law today, to make the world a better place, what would it be? I would make it compulsory for everyone to study philosophy and learn how to think, and about the way they think. The idea being to enable people to live consciously, employ critical thinking skills to look beyond themselves, their possessions, their religion, their culture, their country and think about how what they do impacts on others, the world and the future. I see philosophy as a kind of vaccine against ignorance. If you could jump into the world of any book, which would it be? The Wind in the Willows, to meet Ratty, Mole and Mr Badger and mess about in boats on the river and I’d confiscate Mr Toad’s car keys because amphibians really shouldn’t drive ; ) Thanks Naomi! Don’t forget to bring back some pate de frais gras, thanks ;o) See ya next week, folks! Caanan. This week get yourself acquainted with Tabita / !http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/users/size:135…

This week get yourself acquainted with Tabita / (And here she is in vector form…) / And here’s the strip! / Based on this little bad-ass… Ninja chicken / What happens when good animals go bad? I’m thinking evil zombie demon giraffes (I’ve had my share of freaky nightmares) but basically I think something just breaks in their mind and they turn evil. What’s your favouritest tshirt ever? One summer when I was about 8 I used to wear one of my dad’s t-shirts as a dress. I really loved it because it was so weird – it was red but said “Blue Marine” and even with my non-existing English skills I knew what blue meant and found it hilarious that the t-shirt wasn’t actually blue. Ah, yes, what a joy it was to be a little kid with no sense of anything. Anyway, if I had to pick a favourite t-shirt out of my wardrobe this very minute I wouldn’t be able to decide. It’s quite possible that I’d end up with one of my black H&M tees with some random graphic design on them just because they’re so nice to wear. What do you do when no-one’s looking? Everything else than tidying. Count all my shoes or stick things on my walls or draw random pictures. Or play The Sims 2. It’s my secret obsession, except it’s not so secret. But I don’t do it when people are looking. What are the simple things that tend to be overlooked these days? Things like grammar. We all know it’s there and have been taught how it works and yet some people decide to ignore it completely. When was the last time you cried with laughter? Hmm, possibly when I was on the phone with my best friend and we were talking about eagles. We laughed SO much! And yes, you totally had to be there :P How did you come across the bubble? What made you stick around? I randomly came across a link to someone’s profile when browsing around the Danish forum Tegnebordet.dk I’m a member of and thought “Hey, this looks nice! Why have I never seen it before, I’ve been looking for a place like this for ages!” (referring to the nice t-shirt making and the fact that it was international) so I decided to try it out for a bit, uploaded some work, made a t-shirt and stuff. On my second day I suddenly had three things featured on the homepage and people seemed to be like “Congrats!!” so I figured that maybe it wasn’t just something they did to new people. Also, on here everything seems so much more casual than on other art forums I’ve been on. On other sites I’ve seen people saying “If you don’t have anything constructive to say about my art, then don’t bother” while here you don’t need to say more than “Nice” for it to be a useful comment. I love that. Why does the world need creativity? It would be rather sad if there was no creativity whatsoever. Imagine how dull houses would look if they were all just huge blocks of concrete and how boring life would be without art and music and even interesting food. Clothes would also be boring and tv would be no use as a source of entertainment. Basically, everything would be missing the fun. What do you do better than anyone else in the world? Make lists of everything and anything. Dvds, shoes, things to bring on holiday, things not to bring on holiday, things I need to buy when I move out etc. I do it all the time so that must be the one thing I’m better at than anyone else :P Where’s the best place you’ve ever been? I’ll have to say Scotland because they have my boyfriend and Cadbury chocolate, what more could I possibly want? ;P Although I also loved Greenland’s icebergs and how the sun never set in Spitzbergen. However, it was very cold there, so yeah, Scotland it is. How do you see the next five years? For me as a person? Working, drawing, more drawing and going to uni to study digital art. Oh, yes, and moving country. For the world in general? Better computers. Surely you can’t get much better than those current giant screen macs? Mmmm… Macs Thanks Tabi! See you next week folks! :oD Caanan. Monstar: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and all other anthropomorphic personifications, my name is Monstar and this is my friend Bunnee / from the hit webcomic aptly titled Monstar / Bunnee: I don’t know if you could describe it as a “hit” webcomic. Unless you’re referring to the one hit we get each day from my mum? / Monstar: Anyhoo…we’re here today because Caanan has injured his back and Shirtheads will be out of action for the next few weeks. So we took it / upon ourselves to step into the breach (of copyright) and take over the Shirtheads strip this week. / Bunnee: How did he injure his back? Did a Predator rip out his spine or did he throw it out “on the job” (wink, wink)? / Monstar: You can ask him yourself, because he’s our very special guest interviewee today. Ladies and gentleman a round of applause for Caanan Grall… Monstar: We all know that “Celadore” has been described as the most beautiful word in the English language by the guy who wrote “Lord of the Rings”… / Bunnee: You mean, Peter Jackson? / Monstar: Of course! So Caanan, what’s you’re favourite word and why? / Bunnee: Mine’s kumquat…it sounds like a swear and tastes great!! I like cool. Buzz words will come and go – neat-o, grouse, gnarly, whatever… but cool will always be cool. No-one knows why, and in that, is the essence of cool – it can’t be defined. Now random, that’s a word I hate. Thankfully, it is starting to fade as the word of the day but really – is anything random? When someone creates a comic with two spaceguys and a pet alien hamster with a fetish for leather – well, SOMEone came up with that. Don’t just go ‘Oh, that’s so random.’ It’s not. It’s the OPPOSITE of random. I also enjoy squishy, bubble and pants. And anything that rhymes with monkey. Monstar: If you had to be a monster for the rest of your life, would you be a Vampire, Zombie or Werewolf? / Bunnee: What about a vampiric were-zombie? It’d have to be a werewolf. Totally. I mean, for only one night a month you’re a raging beast and the rest of the time you’re normal. Some women have it harder than that. Bunnee: It’s my turn to answer a question, Tony Barber! Okay, Khan… / Monstar: It’s “Caanan” not Khan… / Bunnee: That’s what I said. Now, Cannon… / Monstar: CAANAN! / Bunnee: Whatever…so imagine this scenario….you’re trapped on a desert island (or perhaps even the Lost island) with William Shatner, Jesus Christ and William H. Macy….who would you eat first and why? Well, if I was on the Lost island, I’d eat Hurley – the taste is in the fat of the animal anyway. But if it had to be of those three, I’m gonna have to say William Shatner. Because Christ is too skinny (and possibly not even real), and William H Macy was in Pleasantville, one of my favourite movies ever, which makes him cool. (See? That word again!) Monstar: And now for something a little more hard hitting…what level of carbon emissions do you think Australia should be trying to implement by 2025? / Bunnee: Stop trying to act like an intellectual Monstar…you’re just trying to show off to all those “greenie hippies” that post their Save the World t-shirts on this site. You know who you are cough Yanmos cough I’m a little behind on what Oz’s emissions are at the moment, having been away for quite some time now, but… I think they should aim for zero. Aim high and land somewhere in the middle is always the way to go. That’s why you aim for the triple 20 square on a dartboard. If you’re lucky, you’ll still get the bullseye. Bunnee: Ooooh, I’ve got a question! I’ve got a question! / Monstar: Well ask it already! / Bunnee: So what’s your drawing process? How do you draw so well…did you sell your soul at some crossroad at midnight or what? / Monstar: I think what my little buddy means is what are your tools of the trade for drawing Shirtheads and how long does each strip take from start to finish? Well, for Shirtheads I use those awesome Canson comic strip boards they’ve just come out with. It’s not great paper, and ruins my pens, but they come pre-cut to the right size, with non-repro blue grid lines around the edges for marking out panels and lettering. They’re really handy. But the paper… Argh! The paper… Sigh. Anyway. Then I scan them in and colour them in Photoshop. I’m red/green/brown blue/purple pink/grey/whatever else colourblind like a lot of guys, so I’m trying to learn colour as a science. It will never be instinctual for me unfortunately. And then, if I’m running low on time (which is usually) I steal the backgrounds from previous strips. :oD Sometimes the hardest part of Shirtheads is the idea generation. I spend a long time looking through shirts that inspire an idea in me immediately. It can take a while, especially since that part is the most wavering. If I’m not in the mood, I’m never gonna come up with something funny. Not even if I wear a silly hat whilst thinking about it. I also don’t do roughs. Sometimes that means I end up with crappy looking strips that could have used a re-do, but then other times I’m in the zone, and it just falls out where it’s all meant to. I love those days. Monstar: Final question. If you could punch one person in the face without any legal repercussions, who would it be and why? / Bunnee: Just one person…man, that’s a hard question. Could I maybe line up four or five people and punch the first one and get a “coconut” head cracking conga line effect? / Monstar: sigh I’m really not a violent person, so even if we gathered a whole bunch of evil doers to get their heads punched in – you know, Bush, advertising executives, rappers who love to talk about slappin’ their bitches like it’s completely ok, etc. I’d still get someone else to chop their heads off and feed them to raccoons. I’m really not a violent person. And I’d like to say thanks to Jacen! • Zombies love brains. Let’s flip open the head of Luckyvegetable / and find ourselves a truly entertaining feed. This shirt tickled my funny bone in particular, / with a very obvious joke. ;o) What would make a better date and why? A zombie, vampire, werewolf or Frankenstein’s monster? Hmm…I’m thinking that sounds like the start of a great party already! I suppose I should stick to my theory that zombies would make the best lovers..well, the most persistent anyway. All that romantic mindless groaning teamed with the unstoppable undead shuffle….quite a combo, really. Of course, I have been known to keep company with at least one wolf, and I’m told by recent bestselling pop literature that vampires are really really ridiculously good-looking, so maybe I should keep my options open… Where’s the magic? With the unicorns, I assume. I can’t be sure though, as only virgins can get close enough to check. Ahem. If a picture tells a thousand words, what are your pictures telling us? Mostly? They’re pieces of my already scatterbrained imagination. Randomness personified. Which kind of gives you an idea as to how difficult a job my careers advisor at school had. He ended up giving me the choice of either prison warden, or clown. I kid you not. Obviously this man was paid the big bucks for his keen insight. What’s the best about the bubble? I’m going to go with cheesy, and say that I found people to love here, in a real grown-up, family kind of way. And it’s helped me understand that I won’t be laughed out of the room (metaphorically) when I put up my work. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? When I was a kid, I had this shirt with a picture from Disney’s Cinderella on it, only it really was like a still from the film, rather than a design, and it showed the little cowering mouse with the floppy hat holding a piece of cheese bigger than his head. Looking on (and about to eat him) was the evil looking cat. It was such a macabre thing to put on a 4 year old’s shirt, it makes me wonder what the designer was thinking-or smoking- when it was deemed appropriate. I remember the back of the shirt was lemon yellow, and I wore it with ‘matching’ yellow shorts with an arty paint splotch pattern on them, yellow knee high socks, and my trademark rainbow stripy sandals. I was obviously a fashion genius, even then. Pfffft… Who do you suspect is secretly an alien? I suspect most politicians are aliens, if only because most of them lack sufficient eyebrow control, and this makes me suspicious. Also they have holes in their theories (and in some cases, their grammar) which makes it plausible that they’re merely stretching for time till the mother ship arrives. Let’s hope there’s at least one chocolate loving E.T. type among them. What are your opening and closing thoughts every (or most) days? It used to be fluffy things like “what are rainbows made of” but lately it’s just the generic “and why do/did I have to go to work?” Apart from that though, I manage to keep my brain at least partially insane for the majority of my awake time. It tends to scare the normals, but it keeps it real. Boo-yah. What makes you warm and fuzzy inside (If anything)? When I eat a woolly mammoth? Because it’s woolly? And really big? Where do you find inspiration the most? It’s kinda like freaky lightening, although I have always likened my creative brain to a giant soup pot in which things bubble until they’re ready to be presented to the rest of the species. I think it’s when they float to the top. Yeah, so, it’s like cooking gnocci, only, those are my ideas. Man. What did you want to be when you were 6 years old? (And did you eat your vegetables? ;o) I wanted to be a pirate king. I told my kindergarten teacher and got in trouble when she told me I couldn’t because only boys could be kings, and I told her where to go. Yar. Oh, and of course I didn’t eat my vegetables. My Mother used to boil them grey. What do you take me for? Vegetables rot your brain. Best to leave them be. ;oP And on another note, the never lazing, always amazing Thickblackoutline was one of the few Shirthead victims who took up my offer of purchasing the original art… And she got it framed! o0OdemocrazyO0o / As well as demonstrating the crazy, / democrazy demonstrates the skills / and you know what happens when / you put the two together… That’s right. Crazy skills. Here’s the shirt that inspired the strip. Peebow / And putting aside any gross / ‘Hit ‘em with the old Peebow’ jokes, / here’s the strip. :oD What would you do with a pot of gold? ohh i would make my family fiscally safe (i am loosing my job this week due to Fairfax…) and then use it to open peoples mind to the idea that we can change our system of living… y’know… more community less capital less ism more art for a start… kill the whole party voting / fat cats living off being a minister etc… What would you sell your soul to the devil for? For Bill Hicks to come back from the dead and start a bar in my home town What did you want to be when you were 12 years old? Artist! a t-shirt sales person :P, getting my Half Elf a + 37 sword of Everything oh and a lego designer… that would be PHAT! (do people actually say that?!) What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? ooooooh I love being in the moment… i am wearing a completely black T…so I will say that… when i am rich i will start buying up RB shirts exclusively and then it will get so hard to choose because i love nearly all of em (except the ones with bad font choices…tisk tisk Is there anyone you suspect of being actually an alien? MOST of my friends / family / government / ME… actually our whole planet Well, anyone who thinks the whole planet are aliens, surely must be one themselves ;o) What goes on in your head most of the time? songs, streams of semi cognizant brain storms and a urgent flashing RB logo How’d you find the bubble? What’s so great about it? What made you stick around? ohh I think it was through Mr Deviant Art… must of followed someone over by mistake…I liked the community and how uncluttered it was compared to DA etc where you really need to be a BIG FISH there to be noticed… sob sniff…. I stuck around because of the community you guys / gals are MASSIVE What can you do offline, but not online? winks… If you could rid this world of one person, who would it be? What would be the repercussions? The man who says we must have a day job and keep our creative side a pastime hobby…. The repercussions would be a universal acceptance of all races and world peace…oh and gnarley solar-powered animated t-shirts Why is New Zealand better than Australia? I used to be all “Yeah bitches you got Howard all up in you! lol” now that he is gone I am thinking The O Z is looking mighty nice… here GDers get shite pay and we basically have to beg for work… in places like Perth and ‘Melbourne Town’ the wages are great and it seems GDers are actually in demand…I would have to say NZ has a ‘feel’ to it that is just so great…(read as reggae, dub, guitar around a fire, setting of smoke alarms) it would be nice to rock on back here after a few years of jet setting around… Demo is losing his job, folks. Buy a shirt! :o) See you next week! Caanan. Just to remind people, Lemmings do in fact jump off cliffs, but not intentionally. They overpopulate, migrate when their food is depleted, and sometimes, just sometimes, they may find themselves falling tail over tooth in a state of panic. Apparently they’re ferocious rat bastards, but it’s still tragic. Ok, that’s the serious part of the program over with. / Bring on the entertainment! MuscularTeeth / Which untamed animal would make the best, next awesome pet sensation to sweep the world? (You can say lemming, it’s ok). First there are many animals out there in the wild. More than 5 easy. And there are quite a few young children around too. Possibly way more than 5. And its hard to put people in boxes as generally the boxes supplied aren’t large enough. Thus, in today’s modern world it’s not going to be one individual wild fluffy animal that will be a hit, but the ability for the customer/child to choose one that suits them the best.. a bit like redbubble here. So my prediction is – less mass stamping out of one super toy, and more custom made for selective tastes. But, personally I’d like a hedgehog. Think of the spikes! Naturally it would come with free goggles for eye protection. The goggles I’d supply out of asbestos or another nasty chemical to show the children a little bit about life – sometimes choices arent so easy; What’s right for the now isn’t always good for the long term. and so they’d learn a valuable life lesson. They’re making a movie of your life! Who would play you? Who would direct it? Who’d do the soundtrack? What is it even called? What’s it all about? Who would play me? Aaah either Spike Milligan or Gene Wilder. They have the right manic look in their eyes. Who would direct it? thats a tough one, but quite possibly Jacque Tati. Go look him up. Who’d do the soundtrack? well if i could i would do it myself – but let’s assuming you want it done properly then i would ask either; Paul Simon or Amon Tobin to do it for me. Y’all know paul, but go look up Tobin. And this was a choice based on living artists, otherwise id probably grab mozart for it.. What is it even called? HA ! easy – “SYSTEMATIK CHAOS or the life and crimes of Sante El Migel Pan Dranos and his Mystic Dance of Hyperventerlatinglyness.” Whats it all about? hrmm that is a hard one. Probably something to do with self awareness, or self consciousness, or knowing/finding/seeking one’s place in the world. What do you remember most fondly from growing up? I’m definitely still growing up. When i’ve finished, i’ll be able to look back and tell you. Probably having races across the rooftops of my highschool when i was looking after the lighting and sound systems there… jumping from one roof to another at night. Removing the hinges off the canteen and all of us taking a few drinks and putting the doors back on. Taking the bows and arrows out of the sports area by climbing thru the wall cavities, using them all night then returning them…. LAN parties with friends. Parties and Raves. Family always. Hiking, camping, riding on the backs of Utes, running down hills in the middle of the night. Firing slingshot rocks at each other, traversing underground tunnels, making dodgy music, reading ! What would you like to be when you’re 40? Well, i’d like to be me ideally. being anyone else wouldn’t work too well thanks. Seriously, i have to get there first. Like a lot of people out there i’ve had it slapped in my face from an early age that mortality is with us every day, and often it strikes without being prepared. So you take life as a gift and hope you get to whenever… As for what i would DO, well i’d like to be playing live music/video shows regularly by then, hopefully with a better studio for my art, to be writing more definitly and hopefully if i’m lucky to have someone close as well. I’d like to have accumulated enough things so my work moves a little above the amateur level in everything – the vids, the music, the images. To be me but more; a loving brother to my younger brother and sister, and a loving son and family member. To be part of a great bunch of friends and to be always making and creating and affirming life. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? oh thats easy ! a few years back i bought a kozyndan Tshirt in melbourne – its a rabbit sitting with some headphones…hang on… this is it here – Kozyndan Bunny shirt as for why, i love sound, and i love kozyndan work – ive got 3 big framed prints of their work which once i have finished my house will sit in my loungeroom – they look awesome.. as for a redbubble tshirt my favorite that ive bought so far is Pagoda-Walker Shadow07 made by the great Scott Robinson… but i must admit, ive bought my own headphone tshirt and THAT’S being worn a lot more now… What’s the big idea? well… BANG !!! EXPAND !!!. ffssssssssssssszzzzzzzzz so that was the big bang… This next bit is called Life. And then it either ends by going into a big crunch or we just sorta fade to death via entropy. I’m pretty sure there aren’t too many ideas bigger than that.. / As for me my plan is to create, and thus leave a little mark on this planet… If aliens came to this planet to take away Earth’s top five specimens to poke, prod and study, who would we give them? Aliens you say? nearest star is 4.2 light years away from memory.. so unless they can break the speed of light it ain’t happening. Well if they could warp themselves in orbit, remaining cunningly hidden from all our eyes in space, / they probably could do a scan on everything at once. then conclude bacteria must be the most advanced race due to biomass and start negotiations with them.. I’d volunteer just to get into space. I love space. Thats why i scuba dive – closest i’ll get. What scares you? Personally, nothing too much really. Spiders mildly (i once had a spider on my back and i hit it and its babies went all over me – hundreds. that was fun). I almost lost my cool when diving along the coast in Marion Bay and i got sucked into a little hole – some sort of slip stream. Used up about half my air in 5minutes scrabbing out of the crack… that was fun.. being hung upside down on the 3rd floor by my ankles to glaze some windows…. / Seeing my grandparents with dementia and knowing my dad will 100% get it scares me i suppose, but of a different nature. What scares me differently again are things of natures bigger than I – the environment, the rise of fundamentalism in all its forms, the way science is becoming a political tool, the increasing gap of awareness between the generations, the environment again, water in my state is a massive problem, mindless wars for petty things.. but always always i say – it is so incredibly random and lucky you exist at all – how DARE you complain. there are people using leather belts for soup tonight – how on EARTH could i be so freakin self centerd to think i have a right to compain in any way? how can i be scared of such a gift? What has made you cry with laughter? Firstly after my septhorhinoplasty last year my tear ducts were swollen and sunlight would make me cry like a little school girl. i looked great walking down the street with tears streaming down my eyes. so the crying side of it has been easy to cover… How about – its just being with a few great mates and just spouting nonsense to each other. Our loungeroom conversations KILL any show or movie on tv. When i made that tshirt I AM DEAD i was literally laughing my head off. Some of the emails i get from you lot at RB have my head spinning. A good comedy like the goon show will do it for me Being with either my brother or sister generally does it. youd think we were all 12. Playing my live set makes me cackle like a madman too. What is the key to redbubble’s growth as the most awesomest site on the net? Oh there isn’t one single key because there are a few areas to unlock. lets go thru them, shall we? First take you my good sir, here you are out of the goodness of your heart making comic strips of the artwork on the site. What’s that say about interaction between people? The community CULTURE is just second to none here on redbubble. i could list a bunch of websites i belong to as long as a long thing, and i’ll tell you none come even remotely close to what RB has here. It’s intangible so you can’t weigh it, nor price it, but it’s worth its insubstantial weight in gold. The bubblesites are a splendifurous idea – each artist has 2 sites; one for fellow artists and then the bubblesite for a more “official” face for a customer to see. that’s a winner. we got the competitions – so people are now interacting with each other and ideas are stimulated. Can’t think of something to do? browse the challenges and go create something to fit – it’s the perfect artist’s tool for “writers block” (artist block?) Competitions are a great idea. the buyers booth – its nice to know what you’re actually getting. i’m going to mention collaboration again – its amazing. i’ve had people like DieselLaws and zomboy GIVE me artwork to add to my own to make it better… think on that.. can you envision another website where someone gives you their work for free? no way. and look at the things i’ve done to poor Malkman – got him lying on bins and making poses like a fool for my tshirts.. finally the STAFF – ye gads ! give them a standing ovation! well trained, courteous, fast to respond -and HUMAN in their responses ! they have senses of humour, and passion and compassion and empathy.. redbubble must also lace their websites with something, because it’s clearly addictive. Take a bow, MT! And take a bow, me, for this is the last Shirtheads. Just as MT says ‘Yay for me doing Shirtheads’ (paraphrasing) I go and do this… ;o) There are a few factors as to why I finally made this decision. My health is one. I need to not overdo it. I’ve already pushed myself to the brink of a nervous breakdown once, I’m not about to do it again. I’m not even 30! And the other is the numbers. The views aren’t stagnating, they’re not growing. They’re going backwards! Maybe a strip has no place here in the Bub, I don’t know – there’s so much going on it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. Did you guys come here to read the strip mainly, or the interviews? There’s so many other interviews going on lately, I’m sure you’ll be able to find others to read… Anyway, this is not the end. I have other ideas I’m working on. I need to take a month or two to sort out my work that I got majorly behind on when my back went out. I want to get back into doing more tshirt designs of my own, and I want to explore doing some collaborations with people. Shirtheads is just me playing with myself in a public forum (wow, that did not sound so bad in my head!) With this and Celadore which I do all on my lonesome, I’m starting to feel I need to play with others. One other thing I’d like to do is work on a few ideas I have to try and bridge the gap between the photographers on the site, and the shirty bunch. Watch this space. Thanks to everyone who has followed my strips and the interviews, sent messages, left comments, made favourites, bought their originals. Special thanks to those who answered all my questions! It wouldn’t have worked without you. I’m pretty confident of that. ;o) I hope I helped bring some people to wider attention. I hope I entertained. Caanan. • My first strip. There are more to come.

  • My series of comics called the clay shaper. This is the cover to the first one. / It is my little clay rat.

  • Water drop :)

  • A carrot invaded my thought bubble… In need of motivation, a cartoon donkey licks his lips at the prospect of an oblong vegetable of orange colour.

  • I’m sure we’ve all been there. /

  • Just a fun quick piece for an educational display, showing how to screenprint in the style of Frank Miller’s Sin City. I did a few really fast indian ink sketches, scanned them in, and then played around with layout until it was sufficiently dynamic. You probably don’t need to be ‘Ready to Kill’ to get into screenprinting though!

  • Influence of nature. Graceful curves. The wispy lines resambles branches and leaf motif on this piece. Enjoy it!
