“In a splash of fiery orange, this pretty flower greeted me during my afternoon stroll. Standing in full beauty in the corner of a garden, she carried grace and symmetry. A closer look at her face revealed an outstanding array of lines and curves, graciously extending onto the petals. / Stretching out to soak the sun, she mimicked it in colour and shape. Vector illustration of a lavender Phalenopsis equestris Orchid. T-shirt version available. I used PhotoShop to trace this image and edit out complex areas, then I used Illustrator to autotrace the complex patterns in the petals, but that left me with a huge file size; I returned to PS to rasterize the AI image at 300 ppi and create a clipping path around the flower; then I took the image back to Illustrator to again auto trace the flower to get a complicated vector with a reasonable file size. Vectors are cool because they can be blown up to any size without losing resolution— there’s no pixelization in a vector. Behind the flower clip I added a single color background (the original sky ballooned the file size. Lastly in AI, I edited out any white gaps, overlaps, and stray points to get a nice clean vector image.

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery White Clematis Clematis are charming climbers, bearing flowers in profusion generally in spring or summer. The natural distribution of the genus (containing over 250 species) ranges from cool temperate to tropical regions. They are members of the Ranunculaceae family which includes anemones, peonies, buttercups and aquilegias. Clematis are long-lived, most are deciduous, but there are some evergreen varieties. The name ‘Clematis’ comes from the Greek word ‘clema’, meaning tendril, and describes the slender twining petioles that help many species to climb. The petiole forms a ‘spring’ which supports the stem but allows flexibility preventing wind or storm damage. On the flowers, what appear to be petals are in fact sepals which have taken on the petals’ function of attracting pollinators and protecting the reproductive organs. To clarify the matter, botanists call these tepals. The fluffy feathery seed heads are also very decorative and give rise to its European common name of “Old Man’s Beard”.

I was inspired by the way the petals caught the sun and I’ve tried to capture this with broad loose brush strokes to retain the freshness and immediacy of the light and the emergence of the flower from its dark surroundings.
