  • Puu Mahana Beach (Green Sand beach) is the spectacular erosion product of a volcanic cinder cone near South Point on the Big Island of Hawaii. It can be reached by a 1-hour hike through beautiful scenics (take plenty of water!). The unusual tone of the green sand is due to the large proportion of semi-precious stone olivine polished crystals, which are left behind during the breakdown of lava. Crystals of olivine form in abundance during the cooling of hot lava. Because they are much harder than the lava matrix, they tend to accumulate near areas of lava erosion.

This is one of my earlier posts from the “Techniques and Faux Bravura” collection, which newcomers to my pages may not have seen before…it is now featured in Decorative and Traditional Painting I am very pleased / Lapis Lazuli “Lapis Lazuli” is part of the Faux Bravura collection…this collection of paintings work well when grouped together on a wall…they are many and varied…metal, patinas, design, stone, marbles, textures, wood et al, in oils, watercolour, acrylics and other mediums…Lapis Lazuli is a semi-precious gemstone..painted in oils on board. Thank you so much.

  • This is my white 18k gold engagement ring. He let me chose because truth be told…I don’t like diamonds! Anyway, I chose one with 4 small diamonds, but the main gem is an aquamarine. I love the color. Not my birthstone. Anyway, It is sitting on a raw piece of amethyst and surrounded by quartz crystals I got from a quarry in Arkansas. Taken using a Sony A350 / Settings: f13 1/50s ISO100 / Lenses: AF-75-300mm 1:4-5.6 TELE-MACRO 1:3.9 / Filter: Cokin Chromofilter SA Star8 A056 / and +1 2/3 Blue 80B A021 / Original Format: RAW Sorry, but I don’t know what all these numbers on the filters that I used, all I know is the results and what these filters look like. Anyway, I liked the star one because the flare off the diamond is not photoshoped in. It is the real shine from it and the result of the star filter. The blue filter really added a lot of contrasting. I did not have to edit this image thanks to these filters.
