  Art has always played a big part in Tom Godfrey’s life. For 20 years the former schoolteacher ran the art department at Highbury High School in South Africa. “Teaching fulfilled most of my creative urges,” he says, “I could try all sorts of artistic things with the kids, which was fun for them and for me.” It was only during school holidays that Tom had time to work on his own creations. “I guess it all started when I made cartoon covers for the school’s cultural and sporting events – things like the evolution of the running shoe, although a little simpler. “After that I thought I’d try my hand at watercolour. Eventually, I joined a watercolour society and exhibited. To my delight I sold two landscape paintings,” he says. Even for such a talented artist the rest hasn’t quite been ‘history.’ For Tom, giving up the day job to pursue his passion was too much of a risk. “There is nothing like a regular income when you have regular expenses,” he says. Even so, he dreamed of retiring early to become a full time artist. Last year Tom and his wife immigrated to Sydney. The move was prompted by a need to look after Tom’s mother-in-law who suffers with MS. It was the fresh start he had been waiting for. “I realized once I had given up my day job in South Africa that the future was a clean slate and being older, and hopefully wiser, I decided that it was up to me as to what was recorded on that slate. “I have given myself a window of about two years to make it, in some form, in the art world. “A full time artist once said to me, ‘Tom, put yourself in a corner and paint your way out of it.’ I always like that image,” he says. Although one of the most respected and versatile artists in the Red Bubble community, Tom is still searching for his niche. “The problem is I’m interested in so many different approaches to 2D art,” he says. “In traditional media I use both acrylic and pastel to create wildlife and landscape paintings. But I also love cartooning, caricaturing and sci-fi. ”I’m not focused on a single approach yet as I am testing out new markets to see what sells – I need to eat first and indulge later,” he says. Tom is currently working part time in a local gallery while building his reputation on and offline. “I’m starting to get commissions coming through,” he says, “Although things are probably taking longer than I expected.” Cartoons and caricatures have proved most commercially successful for Tom but it’s his outstandingly original sci-fi / fantasy artwork that gets him most excited. “If I won the Lottery that’s the stuff I would concentrate on,” he says wistfully. As well as the visual appeal of his alien landscapes populated with characters like Gorgon and Zola, Japanese Fighting Fish, and the Clakkerpods, Tom’s illustrations are accompanied by tantalising back-stories. “The stories just come to me as I work on an image,” he says, “I guess it all comes from having an overactive imagination.” - Craig Scutt More of Tom’s art can be found here /

Maybe you work on a small desk in the corner of your living room or maybe you have a atelier as big as a classroom: whatever is the case … I would love to see it. I’ll kick off.   For those of you who may remember the feature by Danny on ‘No Frills Art’ in the bubblewrap a while back. Here is the outcome of the button badge project ‘I know my place’ mentioned in the interview, which I coordinated with artist David Dellafiora. It ended up producing some 700 artist designed badges which were handed out free at four community events and festivals late in 2007. There were seven artists coming from; Geelong(x3), Melbourne, Ballarat, Sydney and one from the UK. (Three of the artists are here on the bubble… nonstop , jaclynpoole and myself). Each artist gave a different meaning to idea of ‘place’ in this project. A documentation edition of 65 cases was made to give the project a life beyond the performances. Oh…and yes those are red bubble tees the artists are wearing! Enjoy!

It’s not very often I will voluntary travel to Frankston for anything but I was up bright and early to visit the annual Sandstorm sculpturing exhibition on the foreshore of Frankston beach before its season was up. / The Sandstorm (Sand sculpturing Australia) theme this year was Fairytales and Fables. / A massive display of the imagination where no expense was spared on the detail or size. / Gulliver’s Travels / Snow While & the Seven Dwarfs / The Wizard of OZ / This massive piece was completely covered on all four sides with references to Nursery Rhymes and stood 8 metres tall. / The Iron Gian / This was my favourite / I always wanted a cubby house like this as a kid minus the child eating witch of course / / (Hansel & Gretel) I was explaining to my kids how the word Gay had a whole different meaning back when I was a kid and had a whole different meaning when used quite frequently in childrens tales. / These sculptures made the kids doubt my story. / / / (The Emperor’s New Clothes) / / (Puss in boots) Anybody living in Victoria Australia will be aware of the vicious winds that we endured last week. / This house was a victim, surprisingly most of the other sand sculptures survived due to the density of the sand and the construction method. / There were also references to modern day interpretations of Children’s stories as we all know every fairy tale is actually a cautionary tale or a lesson on acceptance. / I decided to put my own spin on to Alice in Wonderland and called it / Alice at the Crack house. / / Alice off her face / / Alice is refused Crack because she has no funds to help her addiction / / Alice is driven to solicit her body to raise cash for more crack. / The impending death of Goldilocks- housebreaker and thief. / This unfortunately placed piece of seagull poo reminded me of an old joke / / Littlest Mermaid: “How’s my car? / Mechanic: “It’s fine. You’ve just blown a seal” / LM: Uhhh.. No .. I just had an ice cream After having an enjoyable outing I left with a sense of regret. / I wished I could be here when they had to close the exhibition. / How cool would it be to kick down all those sculptures?

  A few people have asked me to upload some of the things i do outside the bubble. So now seems as good a time as any. Besides this way i can take a little break from making stuff…and yet feel like im still doing stuff. If you don’t already know i do a fair bit of community art projects, festivals and stuff like that. This is not all the projects or anything…just what happens to be floating round on this computer with me at the moment. So enjoy! I Know my Place – 2007 / I know i have mentioned this before… / / so if you want to know more see here Transit – 2007 (Part of Making Space) / / Transit was a travelling gallery created by six artists from West10 a gallery in Geelong ran by the Geelong Arts Alliance. The Artists were; Julie Churchill, Mark Cuthbertson(Construction), David Dellafiora, Sue Hartigan, Leanne Stein and Glen Smith. Exploring similar notions to those of fluxus and situationist artists, it travelled around setting up quickly doing performances, screening films, handing out misinformation and doing site specific actions. The white infatable in the postcard above actually exploded! This project was extremely freeform…or rather chaotic. Permits, public liability and the likes were ignored so the performances were random and short lived. Sites included industrial estates through to ACCA where the inflatable interacted with the Vault. / 2frontup – 7days / This was an artists residency (Allan’s Walk Artists Run Space, Bendigo) i did a few years back with another artist David Dellafiora. Artists that worked in ARI from each state of Aus were invited to bendigo for seven days to create a body of work and create an exhibition. Our work was performance based…combined with creating an artists edition as a momento of the actions. This was both a really fun project but also very intense due to the time limitations. Seven days…one major action a day…documentation…an exhibition to set up…an edition of 49 artists boxes…an artists talk…and an opening to set up and attend. I think i didnt do any art for about two months afterwards! / Pic one is…Monumental Cleansing for the Empire action…and two is the artists edition we made. Subculture / This was a GAA exhibition in 04…methinks at the Mill Markets basement in North Geelong. Forteen artists creating site specific artworks. Mine was about the poor sods who worked in the wool treatment basement for forty odd years who had signed their names on the beams. I felt sorry for them never seening the sky and all…till i realised in my job i only stared at a computer…windows…or a faux window with a virtual picture of a sky and landscape. Not much different really…and a wee bit sad! Oh…its a fake cloud by the way! / bored yet??? Artists Republics of Geelong 2004 & Art Vendor / / Nine artists…nine laneways…nightmare beauracratic first project that i coordinated. / My lane i let no one into…covered in turf…and made stitched up lips street signs. Obviously…about the asylum seekers issue. Well i hoped it was obvious! Also, as part of it, just thought you might like to see this, we…the GAA which i was the chair of at the time created an artist vending machine(Three actually!). They still float around at festivals on occassions. Heres my postcard documentation of it. Two one dollar coins see you get a random original artwork. / Nightwatch / Shop front installations in vacant shops round Geelong by the GAA. This ones mine…Artificial Ingredients. Petry dished…Coke cells dividing…saturation Advertising! / Commonwealth Games – Geelong Live Site Multimedia Show – Art Insert / Something different…kinda a big slideshow…3oo odd images from the locals…glitchy effects to break it up…and a very cool sound artist to work with…Stephen Oakes. fun fun fun… / Fast – 24 Hour Art / / This project was fluxus through and through. Over the course of a year the GAA did a bunch of happenings. They lasted between 6 minutes and 24 hours. The best one i think was a piece about public liability issues where the artist wrapped the local public art in bubble wrap and put up fake warning signs. My one with dave again was a project where we created art on the spot at a market based on the products we could buy at the market. All a bit of fun really and alot silly. Wasnt actually that well recieved…we got to get the good stuff early before the general public got in. And they wanted it…not our art! ;-P Geez…that was way too long… / Hmm…ok if your still here you really are a glutton for punishment. Anyway, hope that shows people some of the different stuff i do outside of here! laterdays! / G

  I have been touched by the sale of my card Seeing Spots today – this shot was taken on the platform at Hornsby railway station here in Sydney … and was bought by Earthangel who originally had this to say about the image: I love it but I’m biased – I work for an Australia wide Blindness and Low Vision Agency and I love that you took this pic and won an award for this. Many people take tactile markings for granted but when you know people who have died or fallen down between a train and a platform due to blindness and the everyday difficulties they face – I love these things! This would be a great card for our organisation to sell. Well done love the colour contrast which is also what it’s all about. THANK YOU EARTHANGEL for thinking beyond the box and seeing a way for this work to potentially make a contribution … Rosalie

  How many people actually see the truths of this world (or rather this dimension of this world – there are many not just this one). Below is the viewpoint I have always been shown of this dimension of this world for anyone interested in reading it. We are ALL a part of the creative process of life. Our emitted vibrations of energy are returned to us in many ways … the vibrations we emit via our thoughts and the feelings our thoughts create within so if they are thoughts and feelings of good & peace then we get good & peace. Love is the energy of which we are – it IS GOD of which ALL is an atom of including flora & fauna and therefore includes Mother Nature. Love does not mean sex, which is a bodily desire and as such sex is not a spiritual need. I have been higher meditating than I have ever attained during orgasm or experimenting with drugs to see what they were about when a lot younger. The movement of energy also applies to anger and destruction … it is the battle between good and evil … the Armageddon … which is within each & everyone, individually. It is NOT some battle to be undertaken physically between people like some in this world seem to believe. The vibrations we emit via our thoughts and the feelings our thoughts create within is the true meaning of “As you give so shall you receive” and all those other wise old sayings of days gone by that still apply to this day and age and that no one can change that process of the energies of GOD’s Universe no matter how hard they try, we can only alter the flow of the energies through our understanding of the process. GOD is the Ultimate – The Almighty Creator and Master Artist and will always be as God is me, you, your neighbour and ALL that has been, and will ever be, created. Higher Consciousness is GOD and we are atoms of that GOD which moves the energy and moulds the way of how our life, including how this dimension of this world, becomes by our connection to that higher consciousness that some know as GOD. Therefore, what we put onto the energy lines via our vibrations of both actions & thoughts are emitted to GOD (the Higher Consciousness) which we are connected to and which feels our desires and brings those intents into being whether we want the resulted desires or not … so the message there would be keep a clean mind nature for what your thoughts and actions are that go onto the lines of energy via your vibrations created by your thoughts & actions is what you get back – good & bad as GOD does not differentiate between the two degrees of being. Life is the illusion of our being of which we create by moulding the energies into being by our belief and intents which then becomes as we desired. The entire population of this dimension of this world creates this world as to how it becomes through how we allow ourselves, as individuals to be. That it is in our power of self-control and up to each and everyone to have their self-control in order through their discipline of self. We can alter the flow of the energies of this world to create a loving, peaceful and abundant world for ALL if people would WAKE UP to how they have been and ARE being controlled and dominated by those so called powers that be who think they have a right to use their mental (and therefore spiritual) illness against others in the form of domination. The powers that be, the hierarchy, who believe they are the chosen ones of GOD are not the only children of GOD … everything and everyone in creation is a child of GOD – no exceptions. Demons are a figment of the individual imagination and in reality – DO NOT EXIST, although those powers that be who want to control your life would like you to believe that demons existed … it gives them more power by disempowering others with such nonsense. Be warned here because as your vibrations raise in what is known as an Ascension then your fears will present themselves to you so it is vital you get those fears under control and realize that you created them. No one else only you brought them to be for you. Walk through them as the false illusions they are as they cannot hurt you unless you let them since you created them in the first instance. It’s about time to WAKE UP if you really want a good, peace loving dimension of abundance for all in this world. It’s time to reconnect to your higher self which is your connection to Higher Consciousness known as GOD if you want to see the truths of what is being done in this world as a result of people giving away their power to those they have allowed to pull the wool over their eyes – you can either keep living as a sheep being led or you can choose to be living YOUR way not the way of others. It’s YOUR choice that counts in your life not those that are robbing you blind and causing your life to be one of a downtrodden slave to a system gone wrong. The influence being put upon the people that there is a recession – although it’s great for the rich (the upper crumbs – oh sorry crusts) because during a depression/recession people panic, sell their houses at lower prices (which the upper crust will tell you has devalued due to the recession) and the upper crusts come in and buy those properties up at reduced rates of which they have created. As the old saying goes: the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. And that’s because the poor don’t take a stand against those that are putting them in the situation they are in. But then, it is the poor that are allowing the rich to do it after all so who really is to blame. Things are changing rapidly on higher levels at the moment (spiritually which the upper crumbs have no control over) ... change for the better is coming into this dimension of this world for all not just those who seem to (wrongly) think they are God’s chosen few. Everything & everyone alive is chosen by GOD or they wouldn’t be. To help this process of change people need to WAKE UP and realize how they have been brainwashed to believe the illusions those so called powers that be have created to control them resulting in the present outcomes of this dimension of this world … and the people need to take back their own power of being instead of relying on these upper crumbs who look down on those not on their levels as nothing more than slaves to keep them living in the way of which they have become accustomed. The upper crusts I refer to here are those 20 families that control this world through their ownership of Federal Reserves (as well lines of those families that own the steel, mining, petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical & weapons companies) that the Governments borrow off to try make things a little better. Those families believe that they have to keep debt in this world or there won’t be any money … which there isn’t anyway apart from 3% of what they say exists which is kept in circulation and keeps recirculating between people via wages which they spend that goes back into the banks which then gets taken out by others to use … that is the repeated process of the printed pieces of paper with numbers on them that is called money that exists, which is used in exchange for your work labour. The other 97% is nothing more than numbers in computers and has been as such for decades. Yet, they will charge a rate on those numbers sitting in computers which are just that, numbers. It is not the Royal families or even some of those working in the Governments of this world that are keeping people down, it is those above them that use the Royals & Governments along with many others including people in defense forces as their puppets and who have control even over them, that are doing wrong towards the people of this world. They use wars and recessions to keep depopulating this world as they believe the resources are not enough to sustain the population so therefore feel it is their right to just create these unnecessary situations to eliminate some of the population. Think about it: who pays for the terrorists, who supplies them with the weapons, who trains them, who promises those lost people of need that their families will be well taken care of if they do these horrendous acts for them. It’s all created by those that want total domination over the population of this world that’s who. The resources of this world aren’t abundant because they keep saying they aren’t and therefore by emitting such negative views via the media of which others then believe and as a result creates more negative energy being emitted into the ethers of life, the energy, illuming lack of which Mother Nature then picks up on and returns in like manner as what is being given out … a lack of abundance. You get what you give. If you want to know more then get in contact with your own higher self through good physical exercise like yoga, pilates, physical culture, Falon Gong, tai chi or any other light physical exercise that brings your body into good line plus good healthy natural food (not preservative soaked fast foods of which most of those preservatives are carcinogens that create cancers and other illnesses particularly if you have a parasite infestation going on within your body which they don’t bother to educate people about these days. Parasites feed of preservatives and makes them infest – grow into larger colonies – within your bodily organs) plus meditation (deep relaxation that also uses visualization) to open your channels to your higher self which is in direct connection to Higher Consciousness which is what some call GOD. Keep a clean mind nature and when you have done these three steps of good exercise, healthy eating and meditating then you have body, mind & spirit working in conjunction. You will be amazed at what you will then learn through correct vision of seeing the process of life learning lessons from your spirit. And this will probably lead some to ask: Did Jesus exist? The answer is Yes. He was a man of very enlightened wisdom through the meditations (praying means the same as meditation) he did constantly while sitting in the Sun connecting to his higher spirit which was his connection to God. The same sun that is also your connection to that same GOD via your higher spirit within you. And who, like others before him, was sent into the dimension of this world to bring you out of the darkness of suppressed inner knowledge that has been held back from the people of this dimension of this world for eons. If you have ever read the Bible, Koran or any other such religious book then you would know, or should, that it is a book talking about the astrology of this planet’s constellation with reference to the Sun (which was altered over time to Son) and wisdom of how the energy of the Sun functions, although they don’t really teach people that in religious institutions as they seem to prefer to keep their flock in the dark as it is to their advantage to do so. So what does the End Of the World, End of Time mean: simply the changeover of ages, as is the case of now, changing from the age of Pisces to the age of Aquarius.
