Eroticism in exotic endeavours has led the men of our Western culture to trade their ’Mrs’ for a foreign model. Hyandai and Toyota metaphors aside, instead let us magnify tales of mail order brides. The language barrier between man and bride lies wide open, as do her submissive legs. Why, for the men of Australia, is the overseas model an upgrade? Sophie Lane reports. “More?”. The one English word which all foreign mistresses should familiarise themselves with before holding hands with unsatisfied 50 year old men nationwide. In responding to their new found loves’ endless qualms of selfishness, this utterance will serve them well in the purpose of satisfying the green eyed monster embodied in the unfaithful man. If we are to take on the notions of ‘men are from Mars, women are from Venus’ in helping us understand the foreign bride phenomena, ‘opposites attract’ may provide some answers. For centuries many members of the male gender have found exotic women arousing. This comes as no surprise. The dark skin, mysterious language and flittering eyes of one woman who’s nagging need not reply to thanks to abundant language barriers. It only takes one glance of the personal classifieds to see that foreign foreplay is in high demand. Snap out of shallow shadows, place aesthetics aside, and we find ourselves asking why? Upon first impressions, my own father’s new bride looked much more like that of a twelve year old exchange student than an exotic seductress. As ‘Hello Kitty’ gleamed back at me from a baby pink sweater, it was hard to believe that my fifty year old father was pursuing this woman half his age. I myself know the harshness of judgement based solely on appearances so I slipped hello kitty back in the kennel and waited for another reason to hate my father’s new choice. A silent greeting led me to realise that Miss Malaysia was confused by English greetings. So how was my father in a relationship with this stranger? “Adult’s have certain desires they need to fulfil” is a common excuse for my father’s next endeavour. In the application of this mantra to the foreign bride phenomena I can only cringe in the thought of pink-tracksuit-woman as a sex slave. I swallow the home made Asian stir fry and almost choke on a bok choy. Sex aside, as I see my dad shovelling this exquisite meal prepared by his very own woman, I know the next reason for his new love for china town. Food. Previous meals with my father consisted of canned tomato soup, and on special occasions canned chicken soup. Helpless in the kitchen, unsatisfied in the bedroom, Dad’s luck is looking up thanks to the four foot mail order bride hunched over the kitchen sink. Without the fortune of Michael Jackson, altering ones skin tone and visual heritage is out of reach. So for the Aussie wife, apart from exotic visuals, what does she lack when her ex reaches for Vietnamese over the great VB? In discovering why the Western woman cannot meet the standards of foreign females in present times, looking to the gender roles of man and wife before us can lead to insight. During the 1950’s and 60’s, women were everything the Bali bride embodies, and more (speaking English is a useful quality in Australia based relationships). Bread winner Barry greets Sadie the cleaning lady with “Honey I’m home”, and a well prepared meal is undoubtedly followed by marital intimacy. Thanks to the bra burnings of yesteryear female empowerment is now at its peak. Women wear the pants, pay the bills, don’t cook the meals and use their bodies as they please. With a loss of domination in the Western world the men of Australia step back to countries of less stature. In foreign lands women often remain at the bottom of the social chain, just what Dad ordered. In placing myself within the foreign bride situation, I find it hard to understand wanting to be held captive in a foreign country with a man double my age demanding food, sex and food. Alas, having a home away from third world conflict presents priceless to the foreign female. I’m happy for Hello Kitty in finding a home away from the dangers of poverty, but I am disappointed that my own father prefers the domination of a submissive female over the love of his own family.
