Last week I said no to a woman who wanted me to shoot her wedding early next year. She was lovely and it was a well paid job. But I’m just not interested in shooting weddings. A few days ago I opened my email to go through the backlog of models who have contacted me. I checked out their portfolios and based on the projects I am working on, replied to almost all of them to say I can’t fit them in. Yesterday I was offered some stupidly good money to shoot a woman and her husband. She had a long list of requirements and I’m not into stressful shoots. So I declined. Today in my email is a job offer to shoot several telephones for a commercial and the project has a budget that would see me taken care of. The thing is, I’m not really into still lifes, or phones, or taking photos of phones. The funny thing is, even though I keep turning down people (and money), I feel really good about it. Because next week I have 3 whole evenings to myself to snuggle up with a warm drink. And this weekend I have time to go to the zoo. And because the work I have lined up is stuff I really want to do. And because when my alarm went off this morning, I felt like I’d had enough sleep. The secret is “no”

link More than half of the whopping $426.9 million Barack Obama has raised has come from small donors whose names the Obama campaign won’t disclose. And questions have arisen about millions more in foreign donations the Obama campaign has received that apparently have not been vetted as legitimate. Obama has raised nearly twice that of John McCain’s campaign, according to new campaign finance report. More to read by following the link….

My sexy, handsome, helpful cook of a partner just launched a little website for fun. (Techy people do that sometimes) Basically you can purge all your deep dark secrets in a nice anonymous kind of way, and indulge in the sordid details of other people’s affairs. It’s fairly empty right now which is why we need you to think naughty thoughts. So anyway, if you’ve been up to mischief, or your conscience is starting to get to you, or you have a friend who tells you their stories and they are way better than any of yours, go give it a whirl EDIT – oh my gosh you people make me blush. I think that link above is well and truly Not Safe For Work now! P.S. Attention Writers

  • Dazza's Top 10 secrets to affording art

Having reached the ripe old age of 40, and fast approaching 41, I’ve successfully steered my way through life by gathering items which have lead me to utilising some surplus funds to purchase art. Being a tight arse has its benefits. So, here’s my Top 10 secrets to affording art. 1. When on holidays, skip the expensive eateries and head to McDonald’s for a medium-sized Quarter Pounder meal. Always leave the family restaurant with plenty of napkins for use at home. 2. When visiting your parents, arrive just before meal times. Do not call them announcing your intention to visit. 3. Investigate the best gardens in your neighbourhood during daylight hours for the best flowers to cut. Return with scissors, bucket and torch just before dawn for the freshest blooms. 4. Purchase cheap cask wine and drink at home whilst watching free-to-air television. 5. Never leave coffee, tea and sugar sachets, toilet rolls, pens and tissues in your cheap motel room on departure. You’ll be surprised how useful these items are when putting together Christmas hampers. 6. Search your neighbourhood to see who has the newspaper delivered each morning. You work out the rest, BUT, don’t get caught! 7. Borrow your friends new release CD’s and do what you have to do. Copies of such make excellent birthday and xmas prezzies. 8. Never, I repeat, NEVER, buy a calendar. Visit your local pharmacy during December/January and ask politely for three calendars. If you only receive one, return again the next day and ask politely. If queried, say the neighbours pet Bullmastiff ate the first one. Repeat until you’ve secured three. 9. Fly Jetstar. 10. Gently steam stamps from envelopes for recycling purposes. So there you have it – Dazza’s Top 10 secrets to affording art. Whilst visiting this journal entry, carefully and slowly browse through my entire portfolio of images and select at least one to suit your taste and decor. Don’t be a tight arse and buy cards though. Go for the largest framed print option. Happy purchasing.

  • I'm a sucker for small fluffy things...

Time for a Saturday morning ramble… For regular readers you may note that this one doesn’t have the usual bad language disclaimer. This is because I have recently discovered that my mother-in-law has become an avid redbubbler and well, quite frankly, she scares me. I’m afraid she will fly on over here with with her hot sauce and smother my tongue for using such words as fuck, bastard, shit and well… you get the idea. Oh FUCK! My fingers just ran away with me… I am sooooo screwed! Hi Karen On with the ramble… I AM a sucker for small fluffy things. I have been very strong, and very good since we moved to Tasmania and consequently the only fluffy thing that shares our residence is my adorable four legged fluffy one, Rosie. Back in Western Australia however, it was a different story. I took in every stray rabbit, guinea pig, bird, fish, dog, possum, lizard and even one time two adorable little fluffy chickens who turned out to BOTH be vicious first-thing-in-the-morning cock-a-doodlers! Not great for someone who loves her sleep-ins. And I once picked up a puppy on the side of the road who turned out to have a paper fetish. Not only did he develop a taste for toilet rolls, he once ate $400 that was left on the table! Oh yeah… I fair copped it for that one let me tell you… Hubby was less than impressed. So my weekends were spent cleaning out cages, chopping up fresh vegetables, excerising the four legged varieties and placating neighbours who for some reason objected to being awoken at ungodly hours of the morning. SHEESH! Don’t they know 5am is the best time of the morning? So recently actually not so recently, it has taken me a while to get around to doing this we went shopping for presents for the boys at this mega cool store in Latrobe called Reliqueware. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I came across a mountain of incredibly cool puppets! We ended up buying our youngest the coolest black and white goat, who has since become his constant companion. Whilst digging through this fluffy mountain of wholesome puppet goodness, I came across the most adorable little creature… and well… he kinda hopped onto my hand and just didnt want to let go. So, of course, me being the sucker that I am, hid him away until we got to the cash register. By that time it was too late for hubby to say no in front of the (incredibly sweet and hot) young thing behind the counter without looking like an arse and so… we now have a new addition to our family. Everyone… I’d like you to meet Secret Squirrel. Oh come ON! Look me straight in the eyes and tell me YOU could have resisted that adorable face!!! The arrival of a new member to the family should always be documented with full fanfare and so, being the proud mummy that I am, I would like to share with you a few snaps of our journey back to SS’s new home. SS ponders what new adventures await… he is beset by worry and nerves. Will the boys like him? Where is he going to sleep? And oh my gosh, what if the dogs decides he is a chew toy? To distract him from his troubling thoughts I suggest that he goes for a little fly beside the car. He is a flying squirrel after all. The distraction seemed to work, he was having a wonderful time until he flew a little to far in front of the car and got caught in the slipstream… eep! Give him credit though, he shook himself off and like any self respecting male did his best “I’m cool… I like totally MEANT to do that” pose. The anxiety of meeting his new brothers soon set in again though, and so hubby tried to distract him by letting him have a little “drive” Of course he wasn’t REALLY driving, hubby was still in total control but we let him THINK he was really driving the car… as you do with kids, ya know ;) It was a long trip home for a young squirrel, and the excitement was eventually too much, so he curled up on my lap in the sun for a little snooze. So sweet. When we finally made it home, he realised that all his worries and fears had been for naught. He was instantly accepted as a fully fledged Griffin and lavished with love and attention. So there you have it… the story of how Secret Squirrel found a new home. Stay tuned for more adventures coming to a journal near you! “Secret Squirrel tries his hand at Photography” and “Secret Squirrel climbs a fencepost and gets a splinter in his bum” and “Naughty Secret Squirrel plays a practical joke” Oh… and I must add a postscript here. SS has been bugging the crap out of me to write this journal for weeks now. I think he suffers from delusions of granduer at times. So he was very excited when I told that TODAY WAS THE DAY!!! Of course, he then insisted on having final veto on any images I used of him. Bloody models eh?

  • Secrets of a drunken master.
    by Gregoryno6

Among the numerous styles of kung fu that evolved over generations we count Zui Quan, or Drunken …

Among the numerous styles of kung fu that evolved over generations we count Zui Quan, or Drunken Fist. There are several tales that account for this origins of this style. This one most appeals to me: (Quoting Wikipedia) ...a young man… offended a Kung Fu master, who issued him a challenge. The young man knew that his kung fu was no match for the master’s, became very upset, and got drunk. Thinking that by drinking he had thrown away any little chance he may have had, he went into the fight recklessly. To everyone’s surprise, the young man, who had been stiff and awkward before, had now become loose, flexible, unpredictable, resistant to pain, and totally fearless. He defeated the master, and later developed a style based on his fluke. Reckless, unpredictable, totally fearless. That’s my approach to fractal art in a nutshell. I started messing around with Tierazon and MBF Lite pretty much by accident. I went through a kid-in-a-toyshop phase for a few months earlier this year, grabbing programs of any sort off the internet. Originally I was looking for music programs; I got distracted. What can I say? My understanding of how fractals work is slightly less complete than my understanding of nuclear physics. There are tutorials available for both the programs I use, and maybe one day I’ll get around to studying them. In the meantime I’ll continue to explore the possibilities in my own fashion. What’s my secret? It should be obvious by now: I haven’t bothered to learn the rules. I’ve been asked if I have any specific idea of what I’m aiming for when I’m working the fractals. HA! I’m as surprised as any of you that anything I’ve produced was worth a second look, much less a third or fourth or tenth. If I can offer any parallel at all I would say that I go at the fractals like a photographer taking his camera out into the streets. I hope I’m going to be in the right place at the right time to capture a moment. I start with any image I’ve got in the library, or sometimes with the traditional Mandelbrot, and select options at random. Fractals are like any image – they have active areas, and they have static areas. I go for the action. Zoom in, enlarge, go to Julia (and I really must learn one day who the hell this Julia is), change the colours. Whatever! At some point – and I never know when until it’s happened – I get a vibe off something. I don’t see a picture, but I get a sniff of a possibility. Ballerinas, for example, was the final image in a series I called Germs in line. There were no dancing figures, just a line of blobs across the screen. I fiddled with it, didn’t get much that was interesting, but all of a sudden…. magic. Have I made it sound easy? It is easy. All it really takes is an instinct for a memorable image… and patience. I’ve posted about thirty images at RedBubble, and I have maybe another half dozen that I will eventually add. Thirty images out of 1700 that I’ve saved. Actually saved. You can multiply that by any number you choose between five and ten to get an idea of the total images I’ve created. Away you go, then. Fractal your little hearts out! Thank you for your interest. ADDENDUM 26/08/07 – this entry shows in my activity list as having featured on the home page. Did anyone see it? / I didn’t…

Ever hear of this Secret Santa thing? It’s a pisser – a ruthless holiday ritual practiced chiefly in the workplace, at once despised by the retail community and an efficiency expert’s wet dream. It is also, like most strokes of surpassing genius, a deceptively simple scheme – You close your eyes, pull the name of one – only one – co-worker out of a hat, buy that person an expensive-looking knockoff… and, hohoho, you’re done! One gift given, one gift taken (one gift subsequently re-gifted away). Screw everybody else in the office – You’re Secret Santa! And you just committed the perfect victimless crime. I like to think of it as the ultimate Xmas gift for white collar wage slaves. Think about it – you get to continue to pretend you like your co-workers without paying for the honor. After all, does society as a whole really benefit from any of us squandering the holiday bonus on two dozen bottles of wine vinegar filled with pearl onions, red peppers and other assorted flotsam decoratively jammed down the neck into a sort of moire pattern? ( how do they do that?) Love that Secret Santa! Anyway, that’s Secret Santa and it’s a long setup for this – Yesterday we exchanged holiday gifts in my department. A few weeks back I drew a guy named Jon, an associate I actually like – go figure. Jon’s a classy guy, so I bought him a bottle of good wine. Nice. A perfect choice for me to handle without breaking a sweat. The thing is, my kind of holiday gift shopping involves nothing approaching thought, or approaching shopping malls and seasonal clerks with attitude and complexion issues. But…. “Well enough” is something I’ve never been particularly good at leaving alone. It’s a character flaw. I understand that and try to fight it. On the other hand, let’s be reasonable – I didn’t want Jon to think that no thought went into the gift, which it didn’t, so I started fretting…. I’m a great fretter – dare I say, outstanding. Real, man-sized fretting has become something of a lost art. Some think I’m pretty good at portraits. My wife marvels at my unwavering conviction that Kobe Bryant hears my suggestions yelled at the t.v. during Laker (basketball) games. I can do a killer Clark Gable impression – sounds nothing like him, but it’s killer. I must have other special skills – nothing leaps to mind, except fretting. In this arena, I humbly submit that I am quite simply without peer. Thank you. Moving on… So there I am, in Full Fret – twisted up like an arthritic pretzel, all elbows and knees, a sorry state to be sure, and one that never would have happened if it weren’t for the insufferable a-hole who came up with this damned Secret Santa concept – when it hit me like a bolt of lightning – Fix it in photoshop! Hah? The label! On the bottle! Personalize it! And so I did. I slapped my label over the original without regret. It fit like a wine-soaked dream. And, as ever, my long-suffering lovely, Diana, she of the keen mind, elbowed her way into the story by sashaying through, taking in the scene and going right to the heart of the matter - “Shouldn’t you,” she asked, “be working on your website?” All in good time, my queen, all in good time…. Here’s the label Jon got with his wine. Class, huh?

  • RedBubble Breeds Winners
    by Stephen Mitchell

It took a while tonight, but I eventually found a few links to the winners of that fantastic photo competition we all entered a few months ago! Whilst I was not a winner in any of the categories (I had submissions in three of them), I’m still winning by being a registered member here. See, I am selling my work. I use my RedBubble gallery as a base to display my work … and I sell a lot of photographs offline! Last week I had 60 prints (at 6inch x 4inch) of my photography on RedBubble printed at TEDS in Rundle Street in Adelaide . No big deal. Took them to work yesterday. Showed a few women. Within an hour, quite a few of those ladies put instant requests in. A couple just wanted more 6×4’s, and one wants a couple at A4 size. Late this afternoon one remarked that I should have brought in MORE cards for Father’s Day! Damn, but I had a good come back line, Next Year!. Actually, I’m planning to get about 100 to 200 printed through RB before the end of November – for Christmas cards. I’ve been informed they should sell VERY fast! So now we are moving a few steps ahead: Tomorrow we (the wife and I) are getting 20 x A4 prints of these photographs, all of which are on display on RB: From SaharaBelle’s Collection / 1. Walking on Sunshine / 2. Diggin In / 3. Starry Eyed / 4. Like Pollen Through a Straw / 5. Honey Pot / 6. Flower Bug / 7. Sweet Prison / 8. Flaming Nectar / 9. Loaded / 10. Seed Pods / (Yes, number 10 is in my collection. However, because it sold as one of mine, SWMBO has agreed to leave it where it is! Otherwise it would be deleted as a sale!) From Stephentrepreneur’s Collection / 1. How to Bee A Lily / 2. White Gums II / 3. VOC Portrait / 4. VOC Left Door / 5. VOC Tray II / 6. The Cart Behind The Horse / 7. Coffee in the CarPark / 8. Shell Necklace / 9. Tranquiliser / 10. Open Arms Plus two more for a very lovely female friend who wants to frame these her own way : gold gilding on a large frame! / 1. Off His Hinges / 2. Waiting But what then? , I hear you all cry out! Well, I’m forming a portfolio. / Next year I’d like to do a proper photographic course. I’ve been waiting twenty-something years to afford to do this … which is WAAAY too long. After watching younger people around me jump into fantastic jobs and positions over the last few months, I’ve decided it’s FINALLY time to and be more. All the photographs above will be put into a new A3 folder I purchased some time ago. Then I will take that around with me to show off. You want to buy one? OK, either you buy straight from the folder (though I am not sure about that idea), or I take your details and deliver. The whole concept is still being worked on, so we have some planning to work out. My father is an astute business man, and I have a brother whom is a brilliant salesman … so I hope to get both their time-tested advice on certain issues very shortly. / The folder will also be used to convince Adelaide TAFE that I am a worthy student. I won’t write my sales-pitch to the TAFE here, it’s a little corny … but all very true. More about the next stage of this new adventure in my life will be on display over the next week. And I’ll be writing about how we plan to build a Home-Studio and the New Kitchen over the coming months! Fifteen Cards for Sale on Redbubble / / Fifteen Cards from RedBubble / A Big HELLO to everyone around Adelaide who’s seeing more of my photography! Particularly those people at my day job. I guess my life outside of work isn’t a secret anymore! And why I smile more often than I have in a long time.

When i release something new, i figure i can guess that the initial sales will be somewhere between hardly mentionable to OVERWHELMING (this way i can satisfy myself that i have a handle on things…LOL!). Regardless of your artform, the reality is that you never know how even your fans will respond. Are they even still fans? Have they moved on to something new? Have you moved on from their expectations? Even on RedBubble we sometimes experience surprising support for works we weren’t even going to add, or disappointing non-responses for things we are really proud of. Ahhhh….the many joys of being an artist. So, it is with a great deal of happiness that i can report that within 24hours of making the SECRET HEALING MEDITATIONS cd available on ebay I have been absolutely SWAMPED with orders from around the globe. Here’s what it looks like in real life: / So, to everyone who is contributing to this overwhelming response, i am touched, moved, and humbled by your support. It is because of you that i am able to continue the projects which eventually find their way back into your own lives. / / It truly is a beautiful circle. Humbly…. your biggest fan, / Tania Rose

I have completed taking Santa photos for the local Christmas Crackers Gala evening., an event that you don’t tend to see in big cities. Everyone comes out, brings the kids to enjoy a fun night for the family. During my two hour session of getting those special shots of the kiddies with santa, I had a fun time trying to get some to smile, I tried skweaking toys, clapping, pulling faces, making those fart noises, and clicking fingers but some just refused to smile while others eventually caved in and smiled after ten harrowing minuted of their parents making funny noises, and dancing around like a clown. Santa would not say Ho Ho Ho for some reason, instead he just frightened the babies with a stare which made them cry and tug on his elastic beard. So, whats your secret remedy of making all kiddies smile for the camera?
