I took these photographs over a single year in each of the four seasons. They were taken after sunset and I shot them hand-held using fill flash to light the trees. The ‘shadows’ are caused by the silhouette of the tree against the sky during the two second exposure.

I love those cloudy and sunny sky. I love making photo of it with lonely tress on the foreground. If you have an advice to avoid this lens flare (polariser ?), please let me know.

Out for a walk around the National Trust site at Portmuck, County Antrim. The sky was grey and overcast. The sun shining through and the starkness of the branches made me think of the song by the Housemartins, ‘I smell Winter’ – hence the title for the image.
